CULVER CITY, CALIF. (October 5, 2009) – Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Messina star in the delightfully delicious hit comedy Julie & Julia coming to Blu-ray™ and DVD December 8 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Two women from different decades come together through their own true stories of culinary exploration when dissatisfied writer Julie Powell (Adams) decides to cook and blog her way through Julia Child’s (Streep) book Mastering the Art of French Cooking, which launched Child’s career. Nora Ephron seamlessly melds the two remarkable, true stories into a comedy that proves that if you have the right combination of passion, obsession and butter, you can change your life and achieve your dreams.

Blu-ray and DVD special features include commentary by writer/director Nora Ephron and the behind-the-scenes featurette “Secret Ingredients: Creating Julie & Julia,” which features interviews with the cast and crew.

The Blu-ray Disc is packed with exclusive features that will make mouths water.  Included is “Julia’s Kitchen,” a tour of Julia Child’s one-of-a-kind kitchen now housed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, which was custom built by her husband Paul Child to accommodate her 6’ 2” frame and to serve as a television soundstage for her cooking shows.  Also included is “Family & Friends Remember Julia Child,” which picks up where the film leaves off and chronicles her public life including other published works, her numerous television shows, her founding of the American Institute of Food and Wine, the many accolades she received, her philanthropy and her rarely discussed private life: the love story with her husband, her sense of humor, her amazing work ethic, and her love of teaching. Lastly, there’s “Cooking Lessons” with master chefs Julia Child, Jacques Pépin, Mark Peel, Suzanne Goin, Steven Lewandowski and Drew Nieporent demonstrating how to make such mouthwatering dishes as Braised Beef Short Ribs and Butter Poached Maine Lobster.

Count this in the short list of films I actually got to the theater to see this summer.

"Charming" and "Feel-good" are, indeed, two of the adjectives I would use to describe it.  My wife and I both enjoyed this film very much.

I think Nora Ephron is really to be congratulated for taking the topic of Julie's blogging experience and telling it in such a creative way by paralleling the two lives of the title characters.

Streep was an absolute hoot as Child--especially in the scenes in which she was portraying the chef in segments from her PBS cooking show.  I actually had to look twice "just to be sure" they were actual clips of Child.

I will be looking for a good deal on this disc...but an MSRP of $40 makes me think I won't find it for awhile.

Apparently not.  This movie is out Tuesday and while amazon is carrying the DVD for $9.99, the BD is $26.99.  Best Buy ain't any better with a .com price of $27.99.

I'll be waiting to find it in a used bin...or hoping it gets some quick discounts a few weeks after release.

This is a movie we almost saw.  Wife and I went to the theater and watched 40 minutes or so and the bulb went out.  They gave us our money back and two tickets for a later date.  We never managed to see it again during it's theater run.  We were enjoying the film and one thing I had expected to happen to me was that I'd be bored with the Julie segments and would be impatient for the Julia segments.  Didn't happen, I was enjoying both Julie & Julia.

At it's current price, this will be a rental.

That's very sad, Mike.  J&J was one of the bright, non-action spots of the summer for me.  I'd heartily endorse Streep for at least an Oscar nomination.  Maybe by Christmas it'll be more reasonably priced...

I currently have this on my (soon-to-be-reactivated) rental queue also.  Looking forward to it in the coming week or so...

In-store prices aren't much better.  Best Buy & Target are going to have the Blu-ray for $25.99.
