.2 audio question

Thread Starter
I have just purchased my first receiver capable of incorporating two subwoofers for 7.2 audio. As I only have one subwoofer, and have never heard a .2 audio setup, can anyone explain to me what I may (or may not) notice if I buy a second subwoofer to take advantage of this feature?

Until this week I never went beyond an 7 year old Sony HTiB 5.1 setup. lol

There is no such thing as .2.  When the movie soundtracks are recorded there is only one low frequency effects channel (LFE) and therefore it is always .1 no matter how many subs you have.  Most of us with more than 1 sub use a simple Y adapter to split our LFE signal.  Your receiver just happens to split it internally.

If you buy a second, identical sub you will see a 3db to 6db potential increase in output.  If your system is properly calibrated you will see no increase at all.  If you happen to be pushing your current sub to its limits then adding a second will take the load off and lower the apparent distortion.

I would not get two different subs.  Mixing subs can have unexpected negative results unless you have the proper measuring tools to set them up.

I run dual 15" subs and I'm upgrading to quad 18" subs.  Multiple subs are great especially if you want to really hit the low effects with authority.  You have to move air and multiple subs move more air with less distortion than one sub (all things being equal).

Also, one good sub is better than two crappy subs.  If you current sub is not good, it is better to replace it with a good sub than buy a second.
