Hi, what a great forum!!

I have a few questions, I am in the processes of setting up a media/theater room in my basement. I need some advice on speakers for my set up. I dont want to spend really much more than $1000.00  My rooms is 15 x 20 (I beleive, I am not at home at the moment so i will have to see). Should I go 5.1 of 7.1 surround sound? I would like speakers that arent overly big and but produce great sound (If thats possible). I have purchased a Samsung 58" Plasma TV. Should the speakers me mounted at ear level or celling level? Thanks in advance for all the help, and i do appoligize if the the question has been asked before.

 Thanks,

 Dean

5.1 vs. 7.1 depends on the receiver you have chosen, Blu-Ray player and some of your other goals.  If you have to lose 2 surrounds to get better mains then I would go that route.

Everyone has a different perspective.  What is 'overly big' for you may be small for me.  Please give some examples of what you consider too big.

In a perfect world, the speakers would all be at ear level.  At least try and get your main speakers at ear level.  Most of us have our center channel under (like me) or above their screen with a slight angle to it so it points directly at you.  Choose the location that gives you the smallest angle.  Most of the time the rears are mounted a little higher.

Questions to you - What kind of movies do you watch?  Action?  Chick flicks?  Do you want to reproduce special effects with life like clarity?  How much room can you give up for a sub?  Our sub sizes range in size from a shoe box to a commercial refrigerator.  What speakers have you auditioned?  Have you considered DIY?

Welcome to the forum.  Yes these questions have been asked and answered but everyone is different so we keep answering them.

Also, do you already have the receiver or do you need to purchase that as well (and would that be included in your $1000 budget)?

I havent yet purchased a reciever as I figured it would be better to choose the speakers first, so to me it dont matter if its 5.1 of 7.1. To me the speakers that are too big are something that are not really going to overpower the room by their size. For example floor standing speakers that are really really wide if that makes sense (Hope so, as it is kinda difficult to explain that). I have looked at Cinema 10 Home Theater System speakers( http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/cinema-10-overview/ ) and the Klipsch HD Theater 500 home theater system( http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/hd-theater-500-overview/ )

I can mount all the speakers at ear level so thats not a problem at all. I think they are better at ear level anyway.

Now I like watching all kinds of movies, from Action, comedy  to chick flicks. I also like watching Hockey and football. I dont want to give up alot of the room for a sub, something that has good base but is not overly large for the room.

I sure hope that my awsners make some senser, and thanks for the help!

No, I havent purchased the receiver yet, and I will not include the reciever in the $1000.00 budget.
