Home Theater Virgin Needs Help!

Hi I am setting up a home theatre and am totally new it. I have purchased a Yamaha RX1900 amp. I intend to use a Panasonic AE3000 projector. (Dedicated theatre room 4.6mtrs by 4mtrs).

I have listened to the Energy RC50 speakers and really liked them, I would use a RC-LCR mid speaker and a ESW V-10 sub and rear EAS in ceiling speakers (due to door openings). I am in NZ and the speaker set up is NZ$5000 (USD$3596). Another retailer has suggested that the main speakers are TOO BIG FOR THE AMP to drive well and I would have to put in an additional amp, which I don't wish to do $$$$$'s. He has suggested the C500's a CC100 mid and a Veloodyne sub and Niles ceiling due to my amp. It will save me NZ$2000(USD$1438).

Any comments please. In relation to amp size?, set up?, price?- maybe I should import?.( I will be listening/watching music videos ,good cinematic type movies, comedy . My sons will be watching action type movies...I'm paying so they are less important!!. )

Is there a difference between the CF30 and C500?

I'm a bit confused. At first you said the RC-50's and later you mention the CF-30's. Either way, the 1900 should be alright with either one of them. I'm no expert in matching speakers to receivers but both the RC-50's and the CF-30's are listed as 8 ohms nominal and 4 ohms minimum so I would think 1900 would be able to power them. here's a review of the Yamaha-1800. I hope your dealer knows more than I do  According to the link I posted S&V magazine thought the 5 channel power of the 1800, the previous years model, was very good only losing steam when two more speakers were added. But with a 5 channel setup it was pretty strong. To help it out a bit, make sure the cross-over is set to 80 or higher.

As for comparing the RC-50's and the CF-30's to the C500's, I own a pair of smaller CC-50's and really like them but the CF series is a step above them and the RF is higher yet. But I doubt you'ld be disappointed in the CC series. They're all good. Just make sure the fronts and center are from the same series for timbre matching.

Generally, you should be ok with the RX-V1900 receiver, and Energy speakers. Though, I wouldn't use In ceiling speakers, personally. I'd put bookshelf speakers on stands instead.

I'm not familiar with Energy speakers. If they are 4 ohm speakers, and the receiver is an 8 ohm receiver, that may be why the guy suggested an additional amp. If the receiver has an option to set it up for 4 ohm speakers (like my Onkyo 805), it should be ok. Even then, if ALL the speakers are 4 ohm, there's always a possibility it could be a problem. 4 ohm speakers put such a load on receivers, that they can make them run hot, and go into "protect" mode and shut down. Size of speaker should have nothing to do with receiver being able to drive it.

If all the speakers are 4 ohm, and the receiver is 8 ohm, you may want to add an amp, as the guy suggested, or go with another receiver, that can handle 4 ohm loads, such as the upper end Onkyos. Or go with some 8 ohm speakers. Either of these options will make you happier in the long run.
