(CC) after a title = New release in the Criterion Collection.

Individual Titles in the Collections Listed Above:

None to report this week.

The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, Circuit City is still out of business...even in Hawaii (where they NEVER guaranteed their prices anyway).

The Specials

--There are the usual price discrepancies, this week, between the Best Buy flyer and bestbuy.com on a number of new release titles.  So, if you are thinking of picking up a title at your local store, you MAY want to consider doing a purchase on BB.com and an in-store pickup.

--At Best Buy this week, FOUR EXCLUSIVE LENTICULAR POSTCARDS with their copies of The Wizard of Oz Ultimate Collector's Edition.  Minimum of three per store.  No rainchecks.

--Also @ BB, get an EXCLUSIVE FIGURINE (of Batman) with their copies of Superman/Batman.  Minimum of four per store.  They are not clear if the figurine is attached to the DVD AND/OR Blu-ray versions of the title.

--At BB, get a FREE B.O.B. Plush Monster with the purchase of Monsters vs. Aliens Blu-ray OR the two-pack of MvA on DVD with B.O.B.'s Big Break.  Minimum of 10 per store.  No rainchecks.  Products must be purchased on same receipt.

--Best Buy has the following Blu-ray discs on-sale:

$9.99:  The Kingdom, U-571, Halloween.

$12.99:  Reservoir Dogs, Street Fighter, 40 Year Old Virgin.

--BB also has a FREE VINTAGE SNOW WHITE POSTER when you buy ANY of the following titles on DVD for $5.99:

The Princess Diaries 2, Bridge to Terebithia, Hocus Pocus.  More titles in store and on-line.  Minimum of 10 per store.  Products must be purchased on same receipt to achieve savings.

--Best Buy Odds and Ends:  Select Dreamworks animated titles for $8.99.  Titles shown include:  Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Madagascar 2, Over the Hedge.

--Target has a couple of BIG SURPRISES this week!

--Let's start with an EXCLUSIVE SE version of The Wizard of Oz on Blu-ray--that does not include all the trinkets of the Ultimate Collector's Edition that is being released everywhere else.  This version will sell for $34.99 this week.

--Also @ Target, an EXCLUSIVE RELEASE of Gremlins for $22.99

--It is also rather noteworthy that Target has an EXCLUSIVE BLU-RAY/DVD COMBO PACK (similar to how Disney releases its animated films on BD) of Monsters vs. Aliens for $24.99.

--Target has an EXCLUSIVE BONUS DISC with its copies of Superman/Batman on DVD.   Quantities limited.  No rainchecks.  (There is NO WORD as to what is included on the exclusive disc nor if the disc is available on BOTH the 1 and 2-disc versions--both of which are shown in the ad.)

--Targtet is advertising FREE MOVIE VOUCHERS to go see the upcoming theatrical re-release of Toy Story & Toy Story 2 (in 3-D) with the purchase of selected Disney/Pixar DVDs.  One voucher per select DVD.  Shown are Wall*E, Finding Nemo and Cars.  Each title shown and selected others.  See sticker for details.

--Target has a list of $10 Dreamwork animated titles:  Madagascar 2, Bee Movie, Kung Fu Panda & Over the Hedge.  Each title shown and selected others.

--Target Odds and Ends: a list of $10 budget titles

The Wizard of Oz UCE Blu-Ray from Best Buy for me, and maybe Hocus Pocus for $5.99 with Snow White poster.

Mike, I haven't heard any news of The Deer Hunter or The Elephant Man hitting BD this week, or this fall for that matter.  Nothing would make me happier (especially The Deer Hunter), but so far as I know neither have been announced.

Wow.  Color me frustrated.

Amazon must've pulled their listings for both of these titles.  They were there just a day or two ago.

Best Buy still has them up for purchase (at the prices listed above).

And there's even a member of the HTF who seems to have a copy of the new Deer Hunter on Blu.  (It's weird, but I cannot seem to figure out a way to contact that member about where he got his copy of the disc.  There seems to be no PM function attached to his user name.)

I'll go pull the pictures from the Features section but leave the prices in the grid until this all gets sorted out.

Mike, it's a German release, not a U.S. release -- part of the Studio Canal Collection.

Thanks, Michael.  Then I guess I'll remove them from the price grid.  Wonder why Amazon & Best Buy both had them listed for sale Tuesday?

SO tempted to get the UCE of Wizard...again!  Maybe if I actually hold one in my hands it will push me over the edge!

The Deer Hunter is also available at amazon.co.uk this week. www.amazon.co.uk/Deer-Hunter-Blu-ray-Robert-Niro/dp/B002BC9Z06/ref=sr_1_1

I'll pick up Away We Go, Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer and The New York Ripper Blu-rays at some point. Judging by those movies, I have rather eclectic tastes.

Thanks for the prices, guys!

Amazon randomly seems to include European releases in their listings. I've given up trying to figure out why certain ones get picked and others ignored. And the Tuesday date is a complete mystery -- maybe that's when they expected to get stock?

Yeah! Nothing for me for a change.
Thanks for the prices! The Patty Duke Show is a definite for me this week. And I may pick up Superman/Batman PE on Blu, too. I really want Wizard Of Oz, but I'm in no hurry. If the Target exclusive was even $5 less, I'd probably bite. For now, I am content to sit it out and either wait for a better price around the holidays or for the non box-of-stuff version that Warners will most likely eventually release.
AWESOME!!!  Billy Jack is on Blu-Ray!!!  I'll be picking this up right away (it will replace the Walmart bargain bin copy I purchased last year)
Thanks for the Roundup.  I have a question.  I don't have a Best Buy (but there's one coming soon in an old Circuit City building).  I ordered Monsters Vs. Aliens 2 pack dvd with the free Bob Plush.  The price on the website is still $22.99 (not the $19.99 in the ad).   Does BB still adjust the price down when an item goes on sale when they ship it or will they charge the extra $3?    In the past when I preordered and a dvd had a lower price on release date they lowered it to the advertised price.  I cannot wait for our b&m BB to open so I won't have to order from BB.com any more.

What's this exclusivity shit with Gremlins? Will it hit other stores at some point? I kind of like Gremlins 2 better anyway, but anything that eliminates a snapcase SD-DVD from my shelf is ok with me.

Also, if anyone else liked the theatrical cut of Payback as much as I did, you might be interested to know there's a UK release scheduled for this week.
Not sure why Target is, um, targeting so many exclusives, but Gremlins isn't the first they've had (as far as entertainment media). Prince's new album was a Target exclusive. And Pearl Jam's new one is available only at small, indie stores, iTunes (not Amazon unless it's an import) and, you guessed it..Target. No other big-box retailer is carrying it.

Wonder what the angle on exclusives are (both in terms of the store and the artist)...

Thanks again for the roundup Mike!  I add links to Amazon prices this week.  If you are planning on buying any of this weeks releases there please use the links as that will help support HTF--Thanks!

As much as I'd like to pick up Oz, Superman/Batman and a few others, I decided I needed to get my windshield finally replaced.  It's been cracked badly for about four or five years now and it's going to set me back rather substantially.

I may break down over the weekend and put what I want (plus a Wii...) on one of the CC's, but I hope someone can talk me out of it...

Thanks Mike & Patrick!

Just Superman/Batman BD for me this week.  Very tempted to pick up Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal but will wait for them to go down a little more in price first.

Jason, many states have insurance laws that require insurance companies to replace cracked windshields for free. Mine was scratched, I contacted a local windshield replacement (glass)company, they did all the paperwork and coordination with my insurance company and it was a done deal. No cost. This is Florida, but I heard NPR report the same thing last week - that most states honor insurance laws that require this.

Point is, you should be able to have it done for free and still have your discretionary spending money intact!

^ Yeah, I had checked that out with AAA a year or so ago here in Michigan.  I don't have comprehensive insurance and the windshield would have been covered under that policy.  It kind of works out in the end...I'm also trying to whittle down the disc collection, so this may kill two birds with one stone.

I just pulled a listing for Wyatt Earp: Season 2 from the DVD price grid above.

I learned from a thread over in SD-Software that apparently the releases has been pulled by the manufacturer.

Too bad--especially for the fans of classic TV on DVD.

Agreed that Amazon has developed this odd habit wrt European releases, but seems kinda odd that Best Buy's also doing it though -- or maybe I just never noticed it before in Best Buy's case since I don't normally look up titles on their site.  Actually, now that I think of it, I do seem to recall seeing them list Se7en (the Canadian Alliance version) for instance, but I could just be remembering wrong though.

Does Amazon ever actually carry such releases for sale to US customers (vs merely listing them)?  Actually, I was kinda hoping they'd carry the standalone Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon BD that's available in Europe since I don't want to repurchase the other 2 titles in that Sony boxset, but no dice of course.

Also, now that I think of it (because of the CTHD situation), I wonder if one of the reasons that European releases are occasionally getting listed on Amazon isn't due to how their marketplace section (for 3rd party sellers) work.  I was actually checking to see if I could get CTHD at a good price "used, like new" in the marketplace section much like I've seen for some other releases, eg. the Austin Powers set being broken up and sold separately in their marketplace section.  Of course, if someone is selling CTHD broken out of the boxset (as unlikely as that might seem), that wouldn't really reference the European release/version.  But someone could also decide to sell the standalone European release/version anyway -- and it's not like there's a whole lot of due diligence being performed in matching up the actual product listings w/ what marketplace sellers are actually selling (as anyone who shops for SACDs over there would find out).

I guess another possible reason for including a European listing, particularly one for a film that doesn't also have an announced USA release yet, is for a placeholder for Amazon reviewers, whatever other info, etc. seeing how Amazon (again) doesn't seem to try (much, if at all) to match up product listings w/ proper reviews (from both customers and editorial reviewers or similar), which is why one often sees reviews show up before their customers could possibly have had the products in their possession to review.  But no idea if such European listings are actually used for that purpose -- just speculating here...

Don't you mean some sort of pattern/trend of screw-ups (on Amazon's part)?   Don't know if that makes any diff though...

A screw-up is a screw-up...no matter how you slice it.  Some people (companies) are just better at them than others.  I'm pretty good at 'em myself sometimes!

My BB.com order shipped & even thought the ad AND the online price has changed on the 2 disc Monsters Vs. Aliens from $22.99 to $19.99 (with the free BOB plush) I was still charged $22.99 (+ tax & shipping).    I had to call and they have to send it to the credit dept. for a price change which they said could take up to 10 days.  I can't wait for our BB to open up so I never have to deal with BB.com again.

Edit:  They adjusted $3.21 off of the order.  Yippee!!!

Picked up Oz UCE  and Monsters v. Aliens in Blu at Best Buy today.  What great packaging for the Oz set!  Very happy with this, even though the box was coming part slightly by the hinge of the front flap (little scotch tape for that).  I couldn't understand why BB put a damn "spider" alarm on all of the Blu-ray Oz sets, but none on the regular DVD sets that cost $5.00 less.  The bands put a slight crease in the box (and probably contributed to the problem above).
