What 3 films do you want most on Blu? - Page 2

Aside from the usual A-list titles (IndySW, BTTF, etc.) and double-dips I'm waiting for (Predator, Robocop, etc.), my top 3 are:

1. Barry Lyndon (in WB's book-style packaging and with plenty of bonus material... perhaps they can include the Channel 4 documentary "Stanley Kubrick's Boxes")

2. The Abyss (with both versions and ALL the existing DVD features including the LD supplements)

3. The Blues Brothers (with both versions... hopefully they'll do a new HD transfer since the one that aired on HDNet a couple years ago has an error)

Honorable mentions: Lawrence of Arabia, True Lies, Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition, Brazil, Animal House, Airplane!, and Executive Decision (it's a guilty pleasure and the DVD was one of the first ones released)

1. Barry Lyndon
2. The Duellists
3. Lawrence of Arabia

I left off Ben-Hur because it has been announced as coming this year or next.

1. Lawrence of Arabia
2. Barry Lyndon
3. Apocalypse Now

(Especially if they're loaded with heaps of detail-rich, technically-oriented extras).

I think the 3 I want the most are:

1. Grosse Pointe Blank
2. Road to Perdition
3. Barry Lyndon

Avoiding the obvious (Star Wars, Indy, BTTF, etc) that will be coming eventually, I would like to add

1. "This Is Cinerama" (in SmileBox)
2. "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (fully restored roadshow version)
3. "Westworld"

I left Star Wars off my list because I really, really doubt we'll ever see it on Blu, or even anamorphic DVD in its 1977 version. But, I guess a fellow can dream.

No doubt coming out in December 2010 to cross promote with the new film.

My real answer is LOTR, but since that's actually on the way, how about these:

Blue Velvet
Original Star Wars Trilogy
Lawrence of Arabia

No idea how I'd widdle it down to just 3, but just quickly scanning what's already posted, I'd have to say these would be candidates for most wanted (sooner rather than later anyway) in my case:

* The Sound of Music

* Raiders of the Lost Ark -- and probably also Last Crusade, especially since we'll likely end up w/ a boxset and/or simultaneous release anyway

* Alien and Aliens -- including both kinda like Raiders and Last Crusade ... sorta ... and assuming a worthy new HD transfer of course  Oh wait, oops, nobody's actually listed Alien or Aliens yet ...

* Jurassic Park -- well, maybe, but probably mostly because it'd make my son happy while I do like it as well

* Back to the Future -- I guess throw in the sequels also ... sorta ... since they (like w/ the other listed movie franchises) will inevitably be released simultaneously ... but if not, I wouldn't miss the sequels that much

* Lawrence of Arabia -- but partly because I'm limiting to the already listed titles and partly because I can't seem to locate my DVD of it anymore,  but certainly not because I can easily find time -- not(!) -- to sit down for such an epic length classic, and I do hate to only watch 1/2 of a film at a time ...   Hmmm...  on 2nd thought, cancel this choice since I already have more than 3 anyway ...

* Star Wars OT -- especially in their original non-revisionist versions, but w/ whatever film restorations and proper new HD transfer done; otherwise, I can wait since the special edition DVDs are actually quite good and hold up quite well on my 61" display

Some other honorable mentions (from already listed choices, after taking another look or two  ):

* Saving Private Ryan -- maybe my memory is faulty, but I seem to remember thinking the DVD was still quite good; if not, this would probably make the main list

* Vertigo and Rear Window -- maybe these should actually go higher for me, but then again, I already couldn't widdle down to 3

* The Red Violin -- would probably put this lower *if* the existing DVD quality was actually all that good

* Pulp Fiction -- probably should actually go higher

* Few different Woody Allen flicks (though only Manhattan seems to have been listed so far) -- assuming they would actually look all that much better on BD of course

* Thief of Bagdad -- maybe should go higher because I never owned the DVD (and don't really want to spend the $$$ on the Criterion DVD at this point)

* Citizen Kane -- maybe ... since I haven't even gotten around to watching my DVD yet (due mainly to the WAF on top of the kids-taking-over-the-HT factor)

If I actually consider other choices (besides Alien and Aliens) not already posted by others, I'm sure there are more I could include -- and maybe some will bump off various titles I've included above, if I need to widdle down to 3 ...

I'm sure this horse has been flogged to death previously on HTF, but I grew up with the theatrical versions, and it pains my face to see Hayden Christenson in ghostly form at the end of Return, and things like CGI animals, for no good reason, and Boba Fett with a Kiwi accent... I used to love his original voice, what I wouldn't give to hear it again, but I've lost all my old VHS's... :( And it wouldn't be worth watching a VHS for that anyway.

The only thing I didn't mind was enhancing/correcting the laser fire and the lightsabres, which had always looked very rough to me on home video... But I'd put up with that for the charm of having the original versions any day.

Barry Lyndon
The Thin Red Line
(extended cut, please!)
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams

I would love to see some of the important titles by David Lynch and Werner Herzog... Blue Velvet and Aguirre, the Wrath of God would be a lovely start.

Ben, I ended up buying the DVD SE's that included the non-anamorphic OOT . I was one of those that said "no sale if it's not anamorphic" until I came to believe that Lucas will never revisit the subject of the OOT again. The non-anamorphic discs are not that bad (better than your old VHS or my old laserdiscs) but worthwhile IMO to see the real versions.

1.Jaws
2.The Great Escape
3.Where Eagles Dare

1. The Seven Samurai
2. Persona
3. Bullet in the Head

.. but if Jaws displaced something on the list, I probably wouldn't complain much..

1. Vertigo
2. Rashomon
3. Portrait of Jennie

Here are my top 10 favorite films of all time:

01.     Vertigo (1958, Alfred Hitchcock)

02.     Portrait of Jennie (1948, William Dieterle)

03.     The Seventh Seal (Sjunde Inseglet, Det) (1957, Ingmar Bergman)

04.     Orpheus (Orphée) (1950, Jean Cocteau)

05.     Notorious (1946, Alfred Hitchcock)

06.     The Third Man (1949, Carol Reed)

07.     Rashômon (1950, Akira Kurosawa)

08.     Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott)

09.     Fantasia (1940, Walt Disney, various directors)

10.     Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980, Irvin Kershner)

3 of them are already on blu-ray, and a fourth (Fantasia) will be out sometime in spring 2010.  So 4 out of 10.  Not bad, given the relative infancy of the format.

1. Jaws
2. Rushmore
3. Psycho
Star Wars
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Blues Brothers
Barry Lyndon
Citizen Kane
Barton Fink
Barton Fink! Yeah! I could easily go all Coen Brothers:

1. The Man Who Wasn't There
2. Big Lebowski
3. Millers Crossing

Also would love to see 'Broadway Danny Rose' on Blu - Woody Allens BEST film (yeah, I said it), beautifully shot in BW might look amazing in Hi Def. All of the BW films I've seen in HD pretty much have rocked.
