Yes, I read about Wal-Mart and Target. Unfortunately we don't have Target in Canada, and when I checked at the Wal-Mart superstore near me, they hadn't received any blu-ray of Wizard of Oz, nor did they expect any. Most Canadian locations of big U.S chains are usually second rate at best. Things unique to Wal-Mart in the States don't usually show up in Canada. Best Buy and Future Shop both had the big box of "treasure" as you call it, but there is no way I was paying 70+ dollars for a cheap watch and some cardboard. I'll wait it out till my UK order for Oz ships.

Just watched Wuthering Heights last night, shame it probably will never see the light of day in North America on dvd. A sad legacy to a once great studio! Same with two I mentioned above. It seems odd that Northwest Passage could be released on VHS tape and laser disc, but not on dvd. Same with No Time For Sergeants. Just another example of what happens when the "bean counters" and lawyers take control.

Actually I think it is a box of junk.  About three months ago TCM and Movies Unlimited had No Time For Sergeants for sale.  I did not purchase it since I figured it would get a wide release at a lower price point.  So far I have been wrong.

Sorry Target and Wal-Mart are up to their standards up there, but I really am not a fan of them down here.

I have also enjoyed Wuthering Heights from a copy I still have on LaserDisc and glad you enjoyed it also.

I will add my voice to those asking for The Devils (maybe a Ken Russell box?)

I would also love to see Lisztomania and The Madwoman of Chaillot released as well.
I would like this one too ("The Madwoman of Chaillot")  A beautiful letterboxed version appeared on Laserdisc and I'm guessing it will be a Warner  Archive release

The problem is, as already mentioned in the Archive thread, we don't no on what basis they make their decisions what to put out as a retail release and what to put in the Archive.
From The Bits, we know, they're working on retail Flynn. Based on this fact I think, that a final Bogart box, more Bette Davis sets and even a Judy Garland set are likely but on top of that, we have to wait for the next chat, if one will happen or till time will tell?
You bet I'll buy that Flynn set! I just hope WB uses thinpaks for this set and includes six films. I plan on owning all of Errol Flynn's movies on pressed retail DVDs and even Blu-ray. I wonder why they don't release a Stewart Granger set, Robert Mongomery or John Garfield pressed sets?
If I were head of WMV, I'd take the money earned from the Archives, use the money earned for brand new transfers and material to make pressed releases. ALSO I'd have a rebate offer for those who purchased the Archive release.

Some positive news from Maxwell's Classic Coming Attractions column:

Quote:
Classic fans will be pleased to know that Warners has just recently been able to complete clearing the rights to two titles long in demand by fans. No Time for Sergeants (1958, with Andy Griffith) and The Breaking Point (1950, with John Garfield) are both now planned for pressed DVD release sometime in 2010. The studio hopes that No Time for Sergeants will have Andy Griffith's participation in appropriate supplementary material. The Breaking Point might get slotted into Warners' Film Noir Collection: Volume 5 (which is a definite go for 2010), but will more likely see a separate release.

Warner Bros. also continues to work actively on The Hanging Tree (1959, with Gary Cooper). There is much more work to do on the photochemical restoration for the original elements, but the results should be worth the wait. A pressed DVD release is currently planned, but no release timing has yet been set.

The Breaking Point and Hanging Tree would be two great films to scratch off the previously posted list... I'll pre-rder both as soon as they're available!

I'm just confused by the selection of titles that Warner picks for pressed DVD... what's the criteria?
Wonderful news on all 3 films.  I'm most pleased to hear about THE BREAKING POINT, which I've been clamoring for for a long time.  Wonder what rights issues were holding it up...I'm imagining that Eddie Muller will participate on this one as he's been a vocal Garfield and THE BREAKING POINT champion over the years.

Great news.  Am I the only one who finds it sad that Barry now has to qualify Warner release news as being on pressed discs?
No. you're not alone. It's sad that Warners has now discovered that they don't need to treat their treasure like valuable commodity and an art form that has a life of its own; they can just shovel it out like horsefeathers and sheeple will scoop it up, at an inflated price.

What!  Isn't anyone  interested in the Gordon Scott's TARZAN films anymore? There was a very active thread here not too long ago asking for it. Now that the Lex Barker films have been released and available from  WB's  Archieve online site, I will buy the set either from there or at a store.

I'm not a huge Tarzan fan but any pressed disc is more than welcome, even a third Esther Williams set.
Hope some pressed discs announements will be coming soon.

I'm definitely interested in the Gordon Scott films. I think they're probably the best Tarzan flicks ever made.

Today, I'm recording "The Sea of Grass" from a German TV station and that made me think of Spencer Tracy in general. Some of his movies are already available through the Archive but at least one box set is still possible.

So, Warner, what about

The Spencer Tracy Collection?

The People Against O'Hara (1951)
The Sea of Grass (1947)
The Seventh Cross (1944)
A Guy Named Joe (1943)
Keeper of the Flame (1942)
Northwest Passage (1941)

Get a move on Greed (with 2-hour theatrical version included)
A Star Is Born (1954) (without the restoration stills)
The Big Parade (1925)

I'd buy that collection at any price point on pressed discs, but not on dvd-r (even if I could).

Got some more spare time and some more suggestions for potential sets, Warner. ;)

The Judy Garland Collection
  • Thoroughbreds Don't Cry (1937)
  • Listen, Darling (1938)
  • Andy Hardy Meets Debutante (1940)*
  • Little Nellie Kelly (1940)
  • Life Begins for Andy Hardy (1941)*

A Star is Born: Special Edition

If I didn't make a mistake, the above mentioned titles are the ones still unreleased and owned by Warner. No idea whether there are plans for a Andy Hardy set but just in case, I marked the two flicks with a *.
Don't know whether it's clever to put the Special Edition of A Star is Born into this potential set but I think, marketing-wise it would be the best timing to release the rest of Garland's movies, when the new A Star is Born DVD/Blu-ray will be released.

TCM Archives: Forbidden Hollywood Coll. Vol. 4
  • Employees' Entrance (1933)
  • The Half Naked Truth (1932)
  • Hell's Highway (1932)
  • Hips, Hips, Hooray! (1934)
  • Illicit (1931)
  • Riptide (1934)

TCM Archives: Forbidden Hollywood Colection. Vol. 5
  • Jewel Robbery (1932)
  • Ladies They Talk About (1933)
  • Madam Satan (1930)
  • The Mind Reader (1933)
  • A Modern Hero (1934)
  • Safe in Hell (1931)

I really, really hope, they haven't abandoned this series because besides the Noirs that's the series I like most. I borrowed the titles from a list from a fellow German user who compiled this list in a German forum - see, Warner, even in Germany we're talking about your releases and are hoping for more pressed discs in the future. Would be awesome to see some of the titles mentioned above getting a classic retail release. And there are still more Pre-Codes out there that belong to Warner, I guess...

Last but not least..... Bette Davis

There are more than 20 unreleased titles that are owned by Warner and of course, not all of them will get a standard DVD treatment but it'll be great, if we can get at least one or two more Davis sets.

Bette Davis Collection Vol. 4

  • The Catered Affair (1956)
  • Beyond the Forest (1949)
  • The Corn is Green (1945)
  • Juarez (1939)
  • That Certain Woman (1937)
  • Of Human Bondage (1934) - seems to be PD?
  • Bureau of Missing Persons (1933) / The Cabin in the Cotton  (1932)

Bette Davis Collection Vol. 5
  • Winter Meeting (1948)
  • June Bride (1948)
  • A Stolen Life (1946)
  • The Sisters (1938) *
  • Dangerous (1935)
  • Jimmy the Gent (1934) / So Big! (1932)
  • Ex-Lady  (1933) / The Man Who Played God (1932)

* Can be put into an Errol Flynn set as well.

You're missing one of the prime Davis vehicles from the 1940s: The Corn Is Green. That's #1 on my list of Davis-wants.

Thanks. Edited my previous post. Must have slipped under my radar.

Any news with regard to Warner's retail initiatives for 2010 and beyond? Maybe the get-together from Mr. Epstein with Warner in early December will shed some light.
Is 90 days still the normal "announcement" window prior to actual release?  If so, does that mean that the first quarter of 2010 will be devoid of any new to DVD Warner classic retail releases?

Expanding the scope:  are any new to DVD retail releases scheduled for release in the first 6 months of 2010?  Previous Warner statements indicate that their retail releases are going "full steam ahead" (or words to that effect) but I'm now quite skeptical given the general lack of releases.  Are the Bowery Boys still on tap?  What about the long rumored (but never officially confirmed) 10 film Noir collection?

It seems like the only studio still interested in pressed discs of their catalog is Sony/Columbia.  Which is strange, because they were basically absent during the hey-day of the format.  Besides them, it's Criterion and from several of the more recent announcements, it sounds like both Paramount and Fox are providing more titles, so at least we have that to look forward to.  I've pretty much closed the books on WB for now...and I'm nowhere near comfortable with their archive program for a multitude of reasons.
I say Paramount is not doing anymore catalog titles, but Fox is pretty good, slowed down a bit, but hopefully they can suprise u this coming new year with great titles. Hopefully titles like CONRACK, FLIM FLAM MAN, ONLY GAME IN TOWN, 8 MILLION WAYS TO DIE, and RUNNERS STUMBLE.
I hope we finally get the Andy Hardy collection.
And most of all what happened to "RAINTREE COUNTY" ???
That was coming two years ago on it's 50th  anniversary ??
Or is that planned for the ARCHIVE collection down the road ??
We were also supposed to get a Show Boat collection of three films. Seems like that is a year or two behind schedule.
I am hoping the first weeks of January bring some official announcements of non-Archive DVD releases for:

The Showboat Collection
Raintree County
the Film Noir Box Set
Bette Davis 4
Another MGM Musicals set (with LiLi, The Great Caruso, Lovely To Look At)
..........and yes, Esther Williams Volume 3 with her remaining films

I hope Maisie and Dr. Kildare aren't going to the Archives but if they did it for Tarzan, I can only imagine...

I really want to see SUNDAY IN NEW YORK with Jane Fonda on *pressed* disc.
