Modern Family - season 1 - Page 2

It was pretty obvious that Dylan's song was going to be about having sex with the daughter, but the montage of the principals singing it over the credits was pretty hilarious.  I did think all of the Shelly Long scenes were belabored and none of them had much in the way of payoff (the "incident" at the wedding was rather lame in my book).  The catfight with Sofia was thoroughly unconvincing, but when Ty Burrell unnecessarily and repeatedly restrained her to cop a feel, I LOL'd.

Julie Bowen looked especially MILF-y, and the older daughter looks like a cross between Mila Kunis and a Bratz doll.  Which is odd since Mila Kunis already looks like a Bratz doll.

Tonight's episode was probably my favorite yet. It was the first episode since the pilot with the entire cast in one place, and while Gloria remains the weak link, everyone else is really starting to play off one another really comfortably. I love that Cameron the queen was a college football player, and I love just about every scene with Ed O'Neill. The whole topic of a parent's love life I found particularly amusing; as an only child, in high school I'd love to tease my buddies with younger siblings by reminding them that their parents must have continued having sex after they were born. I grew up in a small house, so this idea was no great revelation to me but it freaked some kids right out. One of my friends state Claire's line to Mitchell (about his parents only have sex twice as far as he was concerned) almost verbatim.

That was the first complete episode of the show so far, without the draggy unfunny spots that prevent it from measuring up to shows like Community and The Office.  And Ty Burrell was as uncomfortably funny as anyone this side of David Brent.

I get the show is funny in spots, but not much of makes me LOL.  Maybe I'm turning into a grumpy old dude.

It's definitely not a laugh-out-loud show. I don't think it's really designed to be. I really like most of the characters, though, so that's alright with me.

I LOL'd quite a few times tonight, which is why it was so much better than the usual boredom and groaning the show elicits.

I find this show to be more along the lines of "King of the Hill" - enjoyable but not to a point of LOL (as others have mentioned).

What amazes me is how not gay Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cameron, is in real life. His voice, body language, everything is completely different. Jerry Tyler Ferguson, on the other hand, comes across pretty much exactly like Mitchell.

I don't know what show you guys are watching, but I am on the floor almost every week. My favorite new show of the season by far.

When Haley hit Phil with the car as he was doing his victory dance after Claire threw the race, I just about died. Same with Cameron running toward the car with the cigarette bin over his head as a battering ram while Mitchell was on the phone with OnStar. I also liked how he got increasingly racist with the pediatrician as the tension rose in the exam room.

Agreed about Phil being hit. I was down. Had to pause so I could watch the rest. Loved Gloria and Jay's dialog about Batman and the poncho.

Manny is the best!

Phil being hit by the car was one of only four or five funny things last night.  But that was it.  After last week's stellar episode, this one was a step back.

Incidentally, this epsiode was show out of order and should have been aired before last week's show.  I'm hoping next week wll build on the momentum of last week.

Manny dancing with his pan flute at the end was very funny.

For me, that was cute, not really funny.  And that's one of the problems I have with the bulk of the episodes -- they go for easy cute bits and don't go further for smart and funny.  I think this show could be much sharper than it is, and that makes it seem slow and lazy.

I find this series mostly amusing but not always laugh out loud funny.  But I loved this past week's episode with guest spots for Elizabeth Banks and Ed Norton (!) playing the bassist from Spandau Ballet.

The opening scene with Phil giving Claire the thoughtful gift while Claire gives him a coupon for hugs just hit home.  My wife and I don't exchange gifts for anniversaries yet I always get her a card and flowers and I'm lucky if I get a card.  Xmas is the same thing.  But rue the day I forget...

Even worse is her birthday is the day after xmas so I still have to go shopping for her.  I'd been hinting at wanting a hammock for ten years and eventually I just gave up and bought one.

I found the whole Spandau Ballet thing a riot but my wife, who actually was a huge fan, was just annoyed by the whole thing.  Thus making it even funnier.

I'm usually not a big fan of Elizabeth Banks, even with her obvious assets, but she was absolutely hilarious as Sal on Wednesday's "Modern Family". Ed O'Neill's patriarch continues to impress, knowing Haley's playbook point by point and being neither surprised nor particularly offended. He doesn't feel the need to be best friends with his kids or grandkids, and that arguably makes his a better parent.

My wife and I love this show.  It currently is the only thing set to record on our PVR.  We cant stand most other current sitcoms, but we just fell in love with the characters in this show.  Like many good sitcoms, it takes a bit for the characters to develop and for the viewer to understand them and associate with them.  Plus, I have to say, this is the first show with gay characters that I find funny and likeable.  Overall, it is a lot of fun to watch and I hope it sticks around!

Was there an episode on 12/2?  My DVR seems to be acting flaky.  Recently I thought a show wasn't on because of the world series.  the next time it taped I had no idea what was going on and I realized it didn't record the previous two weeks.  I just want to make sure it didn't happen again.

*After the ghoul pops out in the middle of Miracle on 34th Street* "Is that going to happen again? Aw, screw it, it's already playing."

Pretty solid Christmas episode. Loved hobo Santa.

I thought he said "It's already ruined."

Hobo Santa coming out in just his Santa pants had me rolling.

"Who's ready to try the swing?"

Have to admit this show has grown on me.  This episode was very funny (all the Santa stuff at the mall, Cam being stalked by his former caroling group). I also loved the birthday episode (Fizzbo is a badass!).

I didn't really care for the show when it first started, but I gave it another chance and really liked the last couple of episodes.

It's really rare that a show almost physically kills me.  Tonight came pretty close.  I was eating when he delivered the line "go get your mom a glass of water and some gravel out of the driveway" and damn near choked to death :)  Thank god for DVRs, we had to stop the show for at least five minutes for me go get a drink, stop laughing and get recomposed :)

The whole episode was some great stuff.  But that ONE line was CLASSIC

The first iteration of the Phil character, as the hapless fool trying to be cool, never really worked for me. He's evolved in the last couple episodes into someone that's harder to pin down -- still hapless, but more intelligent and more connected with the family unit. I can believe that this guy is a father and not just a punchline.

The funniest moment?  Mitchell telling Cam, "you're not a bear", which is slyly hilarious, followed by the visual of Mitchell forcing him back into the room with a chair as Cam is swatting at it with his paws.

Cam is sooo a bear.

Julie Bowen in a black bra and panties:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

"He built his own helicopter. If he was still alive today....." had me laughing.

So now for the Home Theater geek questions:

What kind of remote was that?  A Harmony 1100?  If so, Claire smashed $300 against the wall!  And Phil was able to go out and just buy another one?  The housing market must be improving.

Also, someone needs to tell Phil to not stack other components on top of the receiver.

LOL, I was wonder what the remote was too.  Also, that could've been my wife with the button pushing.

I just really like this show. The valentine's day episode was quite funny. My only complaint is that I can't stand Sofía Vergara's accent.
