Are the Elit ads slowing things down for anyone else?

Thread Starter
Are the Elit ads (banner or side ones) slowing the pages down for anyone else? If I get a Best Buy or Samsung ad, everything works like normal but the Elit ads make the page slow to a crawl. Also, typing in this box takes about 10 seconds for my letters to appear.

Mine too. Those elit ads have slowed down my forum browsing to a jerky crawl.

I don't understand, why are ads such a pain on the HTF?

Yep ever since last night, the first time I noticed those ads, everything has come to a complete crawl.

It's killing my system, too.  It's particularly bad in IE - Firefox isn't affected quite as badly, but there's still a general slowdown.
I'm in!

I was wondering why things were crawling along...

As you can see, I had to wait for this very page to load (how ironic!) because of the ad ( I had plenty of time to grab this screen cap):

And if this info is of any use to anyone, here's the detail of what I was waiting on:

I use a Mac, have not noticed a REAL problem. But as i recall, the forum was kind of slow a few weeks before the change. Seems like its a bit faster than it was 3 months ago, but i forget. I did get my first ever pop-up on this forum, asking if i would take a brief survey, and i could win $1000. I dont know if it was ad generated or from the forum. But i do know i hate pop-ups, all of them. Even if it was important, and i could create world peace if i took it, id still close it. They make me feel like Granpa Simpson on the inside. Makes me want to write a letter to the editor!  :P

In addition to the pages with the Elit ads loading slower, I notice the reply box PAINFULLY slow to respone to typed comments. And the Elit ad pages don't scroll smoothly either.  The whole thing makes for a very frustrating experience.  I don't notice this with most other ads.
I think they're causing a memory hole, because it gets worse and worse from the moment I first visit an HTF page until soon Firefox is using 49% of the processor and hundreds of thousands of K for memory. When I go to reply, I type about a sentence and then this pops up:

What happens when I try to reply with the Elit ad

It took me 15 minutes to post a reply in the "Glee" thread just now with a broadband connection. I'll check in periodically, but I'm pretty much done with HTF until HTF is done with these ads.

Ditto the incredible slowdown.   The Elit flash ad is probably the *MOST* annoying/problematic one yet due to the seemingly unavoidable, increasingly demanding, resource/performance hit.

Here are the offending links from my IE cache:

http://m1.2mdn.net/2056871/Phase_2_2009_Stoli_Elit_300x250.swf

Please get after 'em, Adam!   I'm gonna have to stay away from here (for the first time since site migration) until this nasty problem is addressed.

This has gotten REALLY bad tonight.

When the ad hits, everything bogs right down.  With the ad in display, FF is taking up 89 to 98% of my system's resources...according to my XP Task Manager.

My machine is hardly usable.

Me?  I'm still weighing if this one is worse than the Amex Counter Ad.  I guess I'd say yes because it does seem to get worse with time, while the Amex ad was only a major problem while loading.

If you're referring to Adam Gregorich, he isn't around this week (business). If it's to Adam at Huddler, please send email describing the problem to:

advertise@hometheaterforum.com

I see the Elit ads, but they're not affecting system performance for me in the slightest. I'm not sure why, since I too use IE and Windows XP, but obviously this is a serious problem.
I'm using Firefox 3.5.3 on XP.
Yes, they are.

Of course, I have lots of issues with this forum and it's speed. For some reason it has been one of the most troublesome for me, and for a long time. No other site, even ones just a busy run as poorly as this one, and this new software isn't helping.

I have the same problem and it's making the site hopeless. I'm on IE and Vista. Also, why do I have to keep re-entering my name and password so often?

2nd day and the elit ads are still there and slowing everything way down.

The only way I can browse the forum normally is to temporarily switch off Java scripting thru tools/options than everything is fast and smooth again, except you lose all functionality when you want to post something... and than I have to remember to turn Java script back on when I've finished browsing the forum.

Hopefully this latest dastardly ad attack will be resolved soon.

its so bad each word takes 5 seconds to appear after i type. my work tower is generally quiet, but the last 2 dddays coming here bogs the entire system and makes my fans run at full blast until i leave the site. i cant even view topics without a 5 second delay between each click
post #17 of 94
So I'm not the only one having problems with the Forum.  Whatever is bogging things needs to be fixed ASAP.

 Hey all -

Sorry about the performance issues caused by the Elit ads!  I just saw this thread and turned them off immediately. Within the hour there shouldn't be another Elit creative on the site.

Also thank you for reporting these ad issues.  If you're looking for a response immediately, email me adam@huddler-inc.com or adamfarren@hometheaterforum.com to make sure I'm aware of the issues or the thread in the forums where its being discussed.

Thanks for taking care of this Adam!

Thanks Adam.  I noticed Firefox hanging A LOT just scrolling down a page, let alone trying to navigate forums so I ducked in here.  Thankfully, it wasn't just me.
I've been communicating with our network about this - apparently HTF is not the only site that's seeing these issues!  A lot of other publishers running the Elit campaign have complained.

I think they need to make their ads compatible with previous versions of Adobe Flash player - I bet those of us who have the most recent version installed weren't having performance issues but those with older versions were - just a guess though!

We won't run those ads on HTF anymore unless the brand resolves the issues and gives us new ad creative.

Thanks, Adam (Farren).

And yeah, I was refering to Adam Gregorich before -- I didn't know there was another Adam (on the Huddler team) who handles such issues.  Good to know.

RE: the Elit ad problem, I'm not sure, but after I did a computer reboot, it seems like my PC is better able to handle it -- though it's still obviously a nasty resource hog and seems to get worse as I navigate the site.  My PC was on all day yesterday (and I had been remoting to work w/ it), so it was not in its ideal state for handling anything troublesome like the Elit flash ad.  Doesn't excuse it for being such a nasty resource hog though.  Hopefully, it'll indeed disappear from HTF soon (as Adam F said).

Cheers!

Hmmm...  Just saw this after my last reply.   That makes sense since I just updated my Flash player after my reboot, and the Elit ad is not causing the same intolerable slowdown as before.  I do still notice some bit of slowdown, but it's nowhere near as bad as before.  It still does seem to be a pretty nasty resource hog anyway though -- my PC is definitely churning right now even though surfing the site is much more tolerable at least for the moment, but I suspect my PC will start thrashing if I stay on HTF for long since it's clearly causing IE to eat up gobs of memory (upto ~285MB now after just a few page hits w/ the Elit ad on them).

Adam F. is who Adam G. and all the rest of us go to with ad issues. So you may as well go directly to the top.

In addition to his email addresses, Adam F.'s PM box is now open and available.

I don't have time to read all the posts right now, but I came here to ask if people are experiencing slowdown over the last couple of days.  It's got to the point where I can't even use HTF at home (over FIOS), and even at work it's slow and annoying.

So how will you have time to read the answers?

The slowdown should be over now.

I hope that means you, too, aren't seeing the Elit ads any longer, Mike. They just recently disappeared for me, after Adam took yet another whack at 'em.
I was seeing them all afternoon ...up until a little while ago

They're gone here. I'm getting Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts.

No slowdown.
