MAGNOLIA

The Critically-Acclaimed Film from Writer-Director Paul Thomas Anderson

Debuts on Blu-ray Hi-Def January 19 from Warner Home Video

Burbank, Calif., September 21, 2009 – Magnolia, one of writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s (There Will be Blood) most accomplished and talked-about early films, will be available January 19 for the first time on Blu-ray.  With six times higher resolution than standard DVD, along with the sonic excellence of Dolby TruHD, viewers are thrown into the emotionally charged scenes of this film as never before.

Anderson received an Oscar® nomination for his original screenplay - a bold, epic drama that follows seemingly unrelated people on a single day.  Magnolia features high-voltage names like Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William Macy, and John Reilly.  Another star-studded acclaimed film from Anderson -- Boogie Nights -- will also be released soon to Blu-ray and is expected to follow in early 2010.   Magnolia will sell for $28.99 SRP each. Orders are due December 15, 2009.

About The Film

Anderson’s follow up to Boogie Nights was called “one of the best movies of the year” by Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers and was nominated for three Academy Awards®-- Best Supporting Actor (Tom Cruise in an amazing performance as a sleazy infomercial host); Best Original Song (Save Me by Aimee Mann) and an Original Screenplay nomination for Anderson. The film takes place in a single day in Los Angeles, focusing on a number of interconnected people whose lives are forever changed as they search for love and meaning in a chaotic world. The film chronicles such diverse occurrences as a suicide turned homicide by a quirk of timing; a motivational speaker motivated by rage; and a quiz kid rendered stupid by a lightning strike. Besides Cruise, look for more great acting from Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Jason Robards, Philip Baker Hall and Julianne Moore.

Special Features:

  • Magnolia Video Diary -- Covers the blossoming of a modern-day masterwork
  • Frank T.J. Mackey Seminar
  • Seduce and Destroy Infomercial
  • One and Save Me -- Aimee Mann music videos
  • Theatrical trailers and TV spots

Cool, can't wait to pick it up!

I hope and pray New Line under WB fully now doesn't DNR this title to death. I think most all New Line BDs have been so far... this I hope PTA and Robert Elswit approve the transfer.

I'm just finishing a review of a New Line title that's a recent WB transfer, and I saw no indication of heavy DNR.

Cool that is promising news. Some say NEW WORLD may have had a little but you never know. I would guess they at least touch base with a director like PTA on a release like this, good to have approval and blessing esp with his fan base.

This was my favorite film of 1999

Great news - a definite release-day pickup for me, and glad to see Boogie Nights will not be far behind!

I'll take all the P.T. Anderson I can get. No pesky waiting for a sale price.

I was hoping for a commentary since the original DVD was missing one, and enough time has passed, but I'll still snatch this one up!

Now if we can get a release of HARD EIGHT, I'll be a very happy camper!

I would love to sit and listen to him for 188mins and that sounds sarcastic but I am being serious. I think he would rather not discuss the film to much, but I am looking forward to seeing the transfer. It should be exciting.

I think I watched this film in theatres 6 times that I can recall. First showing people walked out as soon as Tom Cruise opened his mouth, I guess they were expecting Cocktail?

I listen to the film score by JON BRION a lot. (The Mann soundtrack CD isn't bad but I love Brion's score)

I agree - where is the commentary, Mr. Anderson? Your thoughts and insight on "Boogie Nights" made it one of the best commentaries ever put on disc.

I really like the Aimee Man songs on this one, one of my favorite soundtracks.  The film always completely devastates me, in a good way.  Anderson is easilly one of my top 10 directors.

I mentioned the commentary, or lack of, since I remember reading an interview when the original DVD came out.  He made a comment that the film was still too fresh in his mind and that he thought he needed some distance before he could do a proper commentary.  I don't think he did any commentaries since, I don't remember one on punch drunk love and I'm sure there wasn't one on There Will Be Blood (which I still have to pick up on Blu, come to think of it!)

I think P.T. Anderson has joined the ranks of directors who let their movie speak for itself.
