I guess I feel really lucky, my Sony S550 player has not had any issues.

I'm watching the set in airdate order, what the heck, I didn't feel the need to watch in production order. I saw Who Mourns for Adonis last night. It looks better then Amok Time did, more shots are sharper. One thing I never noticed before, maybe because this is not one I watch too much is how small the planet set is. There's a rock wall to one side and I never noticed how close it was to the temple! Porbably the rock wall used for The Apple where Vaal is built.

The added clarity really shows the hair and hair pieces and make-up, details on the sets, costumes and props. Looks great!

I have a Sony s350 player, with the current firmware 019.  Star Trek Season 2 does not allow me to change the angel view (from new effects to original effects).  Sometimes it works, but only once after I press the angle button.  Most of the time, regardless of which ST episode, the angle button does nothing on my Sony blu ray player. Anyone else with this player experience the same?

David, the angle button sometimes works. If you time it right. It changes, but by the time it changes, the effect is over or about over and you catch a glimpse of it.

The bullet proof way to do it on the Sony is to use the BD's menu and go to the camera icon on the upper left while the episode is playing. That will reset the branching to always be the new or old effects.

OK.  I'll use the angle icon in the BD menu and see how that works.  Thanks Nelson.

I got season 2 on bluray. a gift from my family for my birthday. I have played some episodes from disc 1,2, and 3. they worked fine so far. no problem. I am using my panasonic 80 blu ray player and its bitstreaming from the onkyo 605 receiver.

Thanks Nelson.  I still need to pick this up.

I have a Panasonic BD30 player, and it has trouble playing the audio of these discs. When an episode starts, the audio is muted for about 4 seconds before it finally comes on. If I use the Skip button to go back to the beginning and restart the episode, the audio plays normally.
Good luck David, I hope you get it to work.

Hey Lou, good to see you here! You'll enjoy the set, saw The Changling and saw lights under Nomand's "head" that I never saw glowing under it before! On Amok Time, I saw a piece of tape on the hand rail on the Bridge next to Spock's station. Probably always there, but I never noticed before.

Another fine release by CBS Home video! I'm really enjoying watching season 2. It's been quite some time as I sold my DVD sets when I heard the remastered episode would be airing 3 years ago.

Wonderful picture and the sound is great too.

The Billy Blackburn home movies are nice too. Really enjoying those.

I'm very glad that Season 3 will be out in December as well. I'll be picking that one up as well!!!
there is an entire disc dedicated JUST FOR TRIBBLES! lol. i never got their appeal, but i guess to each his own.

this is another hit out of the ballpark w/CBS (i'm still angry @paramount for how they screwed up all 10 trek movies and gladiator). i luv their meticulous remastering of this series, i'm hoping that TNG gets the SAME TREATMENTS... but i think the rights don't belong to CBS ='(. that's 2bad.

1 thing of note is the intro music has been re-recorded on the DTS, but the original recording is still there on the 2.0 mono track =). just FYI if people miss the old stuff =P.

I finally took a peek at the Star Trek Season 2 BD set last
evening.

Very impressed with the menu overlay.  This is the kind of
thing that would never be possible with standard DVD.

The only episode I watched was THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE.
I was blown away by the enhanced effects.  Wish I could get
the angle button to switch back and forth on my Panny BD55
as I had to go back to the beginning to switch from ORIGINAL
and ENHANCED to see exactly what was done.   To be fair,
I am using a Harmony One remote and perhaps that was the
reason why the ANGLE failed to work.

After watching THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE I absolutely
prefer the enhanced episodes.  The effects look amazing and
there is even a sense of surround audio to accompany them.
The addition of space debris and a damaged Constellation
following the Enterprise in tow was really a treat to see.
Though it was the only episode I watched, I was quite pleased
with the overall transfer quality.

Even without the enhanced effects STAR TREK still holds up
some 40+ years later as entertaining science fiction.  Now with
the enhanced effects there is yet another reason to purchase
this set and revisit this series.

Star Trek Lives!

The trekmovie site has Easter Egg info for this set, so if you're interested, you should check it out! (Plus Easter Egg info on the TNG movie set)

Also, they confirm with Bill Hunt, the Season 3 set does actually include the original Where No Man Has Gone Before pilot! That's really an amazing extra.

Ron, about your problem accessing the angle to view the effects in either the original or CGI on the fly, I have a Sony player, so I don't know how a Panasonic is. And I realize you're using a 3rd party remote. I found that using the Star Trek BD's menu, you can bring the menu up during playback and find the movie camera icon on the upper left of the menu. Clicking that will activate either version, without re-starting the episode.

i have a BD35, u can use the angle button to switch back and forth.

I'm surprised it's been so quiet on the issue of older players which can't play this release (or on those who aren't handling the audio or angle functions well).

Has Paramount addressed this yet?  Do we think they will?

Would firmware upgrades be coming...or are those with older players SOL (due to lack of support by manufacturers of the older models)?

For such a high profile title, I expected this thread to be going bananas with such reports and questions.

I'm certainly no expert but it seems like firmware updates will fix the problem. I still have a 1.0 Samsung player and firmware updates have 'fixed' two similar problems (any Universal disc and Star Wars: The Clone Wars wouldn't play) for me.
I just haven't seen a firmware upgrade for my BD-10 in a loooong time.  Don't know if Panasonic would even consider doing one.
I started off watching Catspaw on Disc 2 last night, but I received a 'Network Connection Failed' error from my Panasonic DMP-BD55 even though the player successfully passed a Network Connection test in Setup.  Has anyone else had an issue like that?

I guess the issue is either being seen as resolvable with firmware updates or more people are not having issues then those who are. BUt it seems Panasonic has been the main players with issues(?) Sorry Paul.

I've only had time to see 3 episodes and they've been fine. The angle issue for me is resolved with a work-around.

Thanks, Nelson.  Well, the Panasonic DMP-BD55 hasn't had a firmware update since 7/8/2009, so it would seem to me it is about due.

I never had any issues like this with Season One, so it must be something new CBS Television is doing or not doing with their discs.

For all those like Ron who are having angle problems:

Are you completely unable to change the angle? On my PS3, at least, the angle function (both via the button and the menu) only works during scenes with the enhanced effects.  This is the case with the Harmony One and the PS3 remote, as well as my spare Harmony 680.  Pressing it at any other time does nothing, nor will it affect the rest of the episode unless I switch the angle during another scene with enhanced effects.

paul. I am also getting a network connection failed on my panasonic 80 player. it must be something with the bdlive.

Three months is nothing. My Samsung BD-P1500 hasn't seen one since late April.

I mentioned a couple of days ago that I was seeing this on my BD-605 (Costco BD-60). But I have only seen it before the menu appears. Thankfully it hasn't happened during an episode. BTW, I'm running the 2.0 firmware.

I got a network failure connection on my Pansonic BD55.

perhaps bill hunt from the digital bits could look into this problem?

That's what I'm talking about.  My Panny BD-10 hasn't seen a firmware update since August, 2008!  I don't think Panasonic supports the model anymore and would even consider a firmware upgrade.

If nothing else, I'll exchange it for another copy--"The Trouble with Tribbles" was giving me seamless branching issues that I haven't seen in season 1 or elsewhere in season 2 that I've watched so far. It's an excuse, at any rate. ;)

There wasn't anything like that in my first copy from Best Buy.  It turned out that the hub of the case was shattered, and I returned it.  The replacement DID have the little cards.

I watched the last episode of the first disc last night, Mirror, Mirror. Looked terrific!

And afterwards, I tried one of he Easter Eggs on the first disc, type in the code, and it worked!

If you want to know the codes, the clues can be found at trekmovie.com. For your convenience, I will paste them here:

Instructions:
Some of the hidden bits are found using navigation, while others are found by going to main menu of a disc and typing in a 4-digit codes (we aren’t going to give you the exact codes, but provide you with the hint for the code, which are all years for the four digit codes). Here they all are.

Disc 1
#1 – (Enter 4-digit number) – The year Star Trek first aired on TV.

Disc 2
#2 – (enter 4-digit number) – The first year of Kirk’s five-year mission.

#3 – (navigate right from Communication)

Disc 3
#4 – (enter 4-digit number) – Spock’s Birth Year

#5 – (navigate right from Communication)

Disc 4
#6 – (enter 4-digit number) – Original air date (month/day) of “The Trouble With Tribbles”

Disc 5
#7 – (enter 4-digit number) – Registry number of the Enterprise

#8 – (navigate right from Communication)

Disc 6
#9 – (enter 4-digit number) – The year Shakespeare died (from “By Any Other Name”)

#10 – (navigate right from Communication)

Disc 7
#11 – (enter 4-digit number) – The year the Enterprise crew travels back to in “Assignment Earth”

#12 – (navigate right from Communication)

BTW BD35 has a 2.0 firmware that deals specifically w/PiP issues =).

 You're welcome Jedi!

I watched the most highly anticipated episode of this release last night, The Doomsday Machine. First, what a feast for the eyes! And I am not talking about the new CGI effects. The live action has a lustre and sharpness I've never seen before. Some of the shots are dark as the Constellation herself is pretty damaged, the lighting is lowered, and they look great! Some shots looked a tad flat, can't explain it in proper technical terms, but they lack a certain degree of depth and midtomes. But that's probably how they exposed the films and processed it. That's not a ding, that's just the way it is. But it really looks amazing!

On close-up's of William Windom, you can see each beard stubble like never before, each wrinkle on his face. Amazing. Like in S1, you could see the pores on Shatner and Nimoy's faces. The Constellation's mission patch on Decker's tunic was rendered with such detail, like I've never seen before! The fabric and detail of that insignia is finally revealed! Much like I'm sure you guys are seeing on the Wizard of Oz disc, which I don't have yet.

I compared the Standard Def DVD of The Doomsday Machine this morning and it's really a case of day and night. The older disc is soft and has some noise. either grain or something. The BD is clear as a bell. The DVD looks a tad dark, the BD is brighter and has a higher range of tone.

I wanted to add another discovery to the group here. It may be disturbing to some. I could see a rather significant change to The Doomsday Machine that was not done to the last Standard Definition release of the Remastered set. In all past releases of Star Trek Remastered, the new CGI effects of Enterprise fly-bys include a new rumble sound effect of the ship passing by. Not too loud, but there. What surprised me with The Doomsday Machine is they added a new Doomsday Machine sound effect, just for this release. The machine has a low rumble, as well as a sort of repeating machine like sound. Hard to describe, like a piston going up and down, but altered to sound more alien. The sound of the alien probe in Star Trek 4 The Voyage Home is a good example. The prior DVD release has no sound like this.

On the one hand, it's actually pretty cool. On the other, it's altering the original soundtrack. The original searing sound of the inside of the machine is still there when Decker flies the shuttle in. I have not gone to the original mono sound track to compare, but I bet it's the original soundtrack, so it's not like anything to lose sleep over.

Thumbs way up!

I noticed the new sound effects for The Doomsday Machine. I didnt mind, and like you said, if the 7.1 DTS bothers you, you always have the mono track. However, i didnt care for the new sound effects on the animated Tribble episode. They were almost to much, to different from the rest of the episode sound, and music effects. But i did enjoy seeing TAS in HD!
