Star Trek: The Original Series - Season Two (Blu-ray) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - Page 2

Season 2 box set won't play on my Sharp 20U.

Plays menu and special features but not the actual episodes.
All 7 discs !!

My Sharp hasn't had a firmware update since Oct 2008 and I don't expect one soon. if ever.

I just want any other folks with Sharp players to be warned. Borrow or rent the set before buying.

My season 1 set plays just fine.

Oh my.  That's awful.  It'll be interesting to hear more reports on this Steve as they develop.

Is the Sharp 20U a 1.0 generation machine?

I have a Panasonic BD-10 and I'm starting to get fearful that the new software stuff (BD Live, etc.) is going to render the machine less and less relevant (and maybe even functional) as time goes on.

Yep, it's 1.0 and the season 1 discs don't say 'BD Live' on the disc but season 2 does.

I hope there is some way to fix this without running out and buying a new player.

The Sharp has 5.1 analog output and that's what I need. Most players with 5.1 output AND that decode DD TrueHD & DTS MA are fairly expensive.

Every time a player is announced with 5.1 analog outputs at a decent price----they then release it WITHOUT the 5.1 outputs (Sony 350, the Vizio model etc.)

Why is 5.1 analog a feature that they feel they have to charge so much for?

Is there a way to ERASE the previous firmware updates?

The two i added were to make playable a few rental copies of movies I don't own. Perhaps the updates are causing glitches for other movies that i do own.

Wish i never bought the Sharp.

You tell me if I should be concerned...

I preordered the Star Trek Season 2 BD for $72.99
on Amazon a few months ago.  The day I receive it
the price drops to $59.99.

I have already sent a letter to Amazon complaining
about this practice as I would expect a preorder
price to be the best available and not subject to
be lowered upon the day of or after release.  This
is the first time I have seen a set drop like this in
price on release day and I am wondering if A).
Amazon will credit the difference and B). If it not
worth preordering anymore if Amazon is going to
pull these price drops so close to street date.

Sorry to be a downer in this thread.  Really nice
review, Patrick.  I am looking forward to browsing
this set and seeing the new effects.

I heard of someone else in your situation who got a price adjustment from amazon. They got credited $13. Hope the same happens for you. I think they were maybe surprised that Best Buy cut it down to 59.99, which really is at cost, or probably below cost when you count overhead. So it became a loss leader, I think....

Ron, i have had this happen too, and feel the same way as you. The only reason i didnt complain was a 2 or 3 dollar price difference on what i had ordered, not the difference like what you have on Trek.
Here is something else you need to keep an eye on. The price of things go up, and down, and Amazon doesnt always adjust your pre-order price down. Twice this month i have been looking at various price trackers on the web, and have found my pre-order price has not changed, even though its ALWAYS supposed to go down to the lowest price before it ships.
Id call them, and ask to speak to a supervisor if you dont get satisfaction.

I don't know about after the release day, but Amazon's policy is to automatically credit your card if the price is lowered by the end of release day.

Amazon just credited me $13.  Very proud of their service
and the way they handle these things.  Thanks for the help,
folks!

Amazon did the same thing with me on this order ($15 in my case). I used a $50 gift card, too, so my out of pocket cost was only $10 for the set.

Glad you got your refund Ron. It took longer than usual for me to receive mine, but they did come through for me as well.

As for the set, I seem to have one problem that has me stumped. I have a Panasonic BD-605 (the Costco version of the BD-60). When I start up any of the disks, the player puts up a statement that the network connection has started. Then, when the disk starts for real (after the little Java animation of the E firing its phasers), the player puts up another (rather large) message saying the network connection failed.

Does anyone else with a Panny see this? I know it's not the network connection itself because I've seen it both before and after updating the firmware to 2.0 (which, BTW, seems to make the disks start up faster). BD-Live works as well. However, since I have generally found BD-Live to be somewhat of a disappointment, I may just disconnect the network cable until the next firmware update.

Other than that, I am enjoying the set. I watched most of "Journey to Babel" last night and forgot how much I enjoyed it. Although they still didn't take the opportunity to fix "Hanger Deck".

Glad to hear the Amazon price change issue was resolved for you guys. Sorry to hear that some players are having issues with this set. I hope you guys get some help to resolve them.

I guess I feel really lucky, my Sony S550 player has not had any issues.

I'm watching the set in airdate order, what the heck, I didn't feel the need to watch in production order. I saw Who Mourns for Adonis last night. It looks better then Amok Time did, more shots are sharper. One thing I never noticed before, maybe because this is not one I watch too much is how small the planet set is. There's a rock wall to one side and I never noticed how close it was to the temple! Porbably the rock wall used for The Apple where Vaal is built.

The added clarity really shows the hair and hair pieces and make-up, details on the sets, costumes and props. Looks great!

My Panasonic DMP-BD10A won't play TOS 2 blu rays either.   Root menu and special features work fine, but episodes will not play.  I am using the latest firmware (V2.5).   TOS 1 blu rays work fine.

This does not sound good for those of us with older players (Panny BD-10 for me) as the technology moves forward.

Or, I suppose (if my glass if half full), maybe it might mean some firmware upgrades for machines which haven't seen any in a long time?

I have yet to open my boxed set but I am
beginning to wonder....

I have a fairly new Panasonic BD55 player.

Went through two copies of BRAVEHEART.
Each would not play, freezing up in the exact
same spot at the beginning of the disc where
the promo spot was located.

I realized to get around it I had to hit skip and
forward a few times but now reading some of
these stories, I wonder if Panny players are
having a problem with Paramount discs.

Its starting to sound more like a problem with older players to me, Ron (1.0 machines).  And, one of the problems is with a Sharp  20U.

Perhaps it's older Pannys. My BD-605 had no problem with Braveheart. The "network fail" message I mentioned above is the only Paramount issue I have had (so far).

I looked and Season 1 did have the Blu-ray Live so it wasn't that. Then I thought it was the "Moblile-Blu' feature, but only discs 1-4 have that and none of the 7 discs will play on my machine.

The only thing I see different is the 'loading' display with the little ship firing. That wasn't on the season 1 discs.

Selfishly I am glad other players are having the problem because I was afraid it was the discs and not the player. I didn't want to hang onto the set for 5 months till i get a new player and find out it was the set and not the machine.

I bought my set down in South Florida by the way.

I guess I'll be getting a new player sooner than I thought.

But I ask again.......

Can I erase old firmware updates and is there any chance that would help???

Thanks.

Thanks.

Steve:  I'd take that question over to the HT Hardware (high def)  Forum where all the experts on such issues hang out waiting to pounce.  Be sure to give 'em your model #, etc.

I'd also ask if such action makes any sense in this (or any) instance.  Good luck and report back.

Thanks, I'll do that.
Steve, its my understanding you cant go back with firmware. Its a done deal, even if you put an old disc in. Id be afraid of bricking the machine, if i tried it.

No problems on my Sony 350, or PS3.
Ron. I had the panasonic 30 player and then upgraded to the 605. I did have alot ofproblems with that player but then upgraded to the 80.. not so many problems.. some people are having freezing problems with the 60 and the 80. I don't have season 2 of star trek, but I do have the first season.. it worked fine.

Panasonic BD10-A will not play Season 2. I had an upgrade when the James Bond Discs came out. I guess I'll return them and wait till I can afford another player which won't be soon.

I am new to blu. When I was buying, however, I was really worried about the talk of the need for "firmware" updates. That's actually the biggest reason why I decided to get a ps3--because it has wireless internet capability, and automatically updates itself with the latest firmware. It's a new machine, a few weeks old, but we've already had one firmware update. Took a few minutes. It's like downloading a new version of microsoft word, or something--it's that big.

Anyway, am I correct in thinking I shouldn't have any problem with these Star Trek discs if I decide to buy them. I must have watched each episode 10-15 times since the early 70s, but still it is amazing what it looks like on blu...
Ben, based on the feedback on this thread, the playback issue seems to be affecting older players. Pat, who did the review of these sets played them on a PS3, if I am not mistaken.

Go for it and enjoy Star Trek in hi-def!
Thanks Nelson. I pulled the trigger and bought it for 60 bucks from amazon. Should be here in a week. I realize I've seen more of the first season's episodes multiple, multiple times. I love City on the Edge, for instance, but I've probably seen that one more than almost any other episode. Looking through the titles, there are a few episodes in the second season I haven't seen more than one or twice in the last ten years....
My original plan was to wait on season 2 for a while (at least until I finished watching season 1!), but $59.99 is too good to pass up (I paid more than that for a used copy of season 1!).  I don't anticipate having any playback problems, since I use a PS3 for my blu viewing.  Bring on season 3!

Supposedly, season 2 was supposed to include bonus Monopoly cards, but my copy from Best Buy didn't have them. Did anybody else actually get the cards? Was there an indication on the package that they were in there? And where did you buy from?
Does your set include a little clear plastic package with a card that says Star Trek Continuim Edition? It's got 2 cards in that package. That's what came in my ST S2 set. And I did get mine from Best Buy. I think they're cards you use to enter a sweepstakes to win a copy of monopoly. Something like that, I have not gone to the URL that's on the card to get the contest entry info.

That's what I was looking for. I didn't see anything like that, but I'll double-check that it didn't fall out without me noticing when I was opening it.

If nothing else, I'll exchange it for another copy--"The Trouble with Tribbles" was giving me seamless branching issues that I haven't seen in season 1 or elsewhere in season 2 that I've watched so far. It's an excuse, at any rate. ;)
