They also hit you with sales tax and a shipping charge, so the actual price for a single disc is more like $27!!! That's Criterion-like pricing for a DVD-R of a old video transfer from the 80s or 90s. It's just not worth it, and really not even feasible for most collectors. I would buy any number of these titles if the pricing for an individual disc were more like $17 total, which seems entirely reasonable to me based on the prices of pressed discs of classic films.

Judicious shopping (sales, coupons etc) at the Warner archives and the discs have varied from $5 to $15 and no shipping charges. Being completely amoral with no principles, I have no such compunctions about gobbling up as much as I can and my Archive titles number around 140 or so right now.

It's a big disappointment to see them jack up the prices after last year where it seemed they floated the idea of a subscription service or something that would cut the price tag for repeat buyers. Now they plaster REMASTERED on top of certain titles as if it justifies charging $25 or $30. Meanwhile Insiders aren't seeing nearly the discounts from a year ago on "non-remastered titles" and to me there's a huge difference between paying $13 and $19 for the product they are offering.

I really expected them to make the pricing more competitive a year in for their program and instead it's gone the other way.

A shame.

MichaelEl, at the WB site there is free shipping for archive titles this month, and code XB910 is active and will bring the $19.99 down to $15.96,( and the $24.99 titles to $19.99.) Sales tax for my state brought the $15.96 up to $17.24 shipped.

WB just added one of my favorite RKO crime movies, BUNCO SQUAD, and I was thinking of getting it now, but decided to wait for DeepDiscount's November 25% off sale when it should be around $14.37.

During DD's June 25% off sale I ordered the Torchy Blane Collection (9 movies, on 5 discs) $30.60, and 5 regular archive titles at $14.54 each. That gave me a per movie price of $7.37 each.

Based on DD's current pricing the Sony DVD-R titles should be around $13.00 during the Nov. 25% off sale.

It is a way for them to increase revenue for those of us that like obscure films and cheaper for them then pressing discs.

We get an inferior product hence we have to pay more for it !!! Not too much incentive unless you really can't live without that film.

I'm reminded of DC Comics (owned by Warners) The best selling 32 page comics still sell for $2.99 but the ones that don't sell well, but have a strong loyal fanbase sell for $3.99, which is the standard price for 40 page titles.

It's also surprising, when you consider it's Warners, the company that spent the last decade trying to sell themselves as God's gift to the classic movie fan. How about living up to some of that old PR and making the Archive affordable to most fans? Add more value paks or introduce a bulk discount. It's not surprising to see other companies abandon their classic fan base, but it is surprising to see Warners do it, since they spent so much time and PR trying to convince folks they care.

My problem with all the MOD programs is that they seem so cold, like such a slap in the face to longtime classic movie DVD buyers. After a decade, they'll finally offer a copy of the film you've been waiting for all this time, a copy that hasn't been restored or remasted, rather taken from a 1980s transfer, and they'll put it barebones, at triple the price, on a format that's inferior to their retail DVDs. You'd think they'd make some concession to the fans by lowering the price for these, but no. If they want to maintain the price level, then how about improving the quality of these discs? We saw Warners try to do that by remastering a few of their releases. But then Warners actually raised the prices for these, as if a remastering was something special, and not something that should have been expected on all these titles to begin with. Again, it just feels so cold.

What it all boils down to is price vs. quality. Keep the price, then raise the quality; bring everything up to retail standards. Keep the sub-retail quality, then lower the price. To me, that's reasonable and fair. So far, most of these MOD programs don't seem to be either.

I'm guessing that WB is meeting their MOD sales # expectations or we'd see the prices being lowered.  I've only bought the "Barker" Tarzan set and I got that at a discounted price.  I can't justify buying titles at their regular store prices but they must be getting the business that they're wanting to see with their MOD releases.

I agree that the MOD sales must be doing very good for Warner to drop the value paks.  Considering the economic uncertainty of the present, its quite understandable that WB is trying to get as much profit as they can out of a successful product line.

A number of cult/genre flicks up for tomorrow at the Archive, including the George Pal productions ATLANTIS, THE LOST CONTINENT and THE POWER, CLEOPATRA JONES AND THE CASINO OF GOLD, and THEY CAME TO ROB LAS VEGAS.

Wait, THE POWER is coming out?! Sweet!

Lou Lumenick in the New York Post, who always seem to be writing about the Warner titles, wrote an quick article about the Sony MOD program and ended it with stating that Fox is planning on starting a similar program at the first of next year.  I do hope this is the case.

I can not believe that THEY CAME TO ROB LAS VEGAS is coming out.  I have wanted this for a long time.

It would be great if fox starts up a mod program . I only wish that this GD price that has been established by WB would go down instead of up.

When i heard all of these companies were going to  mod programs , i was hoping they would try to out do each other by bringing down the prices . But so far that hasn't been the case .

I read that too, but missed that it could be the first of the year.  That might actually make the 75th Anniversary build-up actually worth it.

My bad, the article said next year, I think I was trying to rush it.  Need some more Alice Faye.

Sweet, that FOX is throwing their hat into the ring, too.

I hope the english subtitles are present for the German-language scenes.  They were omitted when the VHS edition was released.

Warner released Cleopatra Jones & The Casino of Gold as a pressed DVD in Australia. I got my copy new for $5. The transfer is very good.

Has ATLANTIS sunk? It and the other new releases from yesterday seem to be missing from the WA site today. Of course, that web page never met a glitch it didn't like...

That's your loss. Film collectors who take the time to read about movies know what this stuff is, and welcome the opportunity to see classic films they've never seen before.

I am hoping for Pearl the miniseries.

Warner Archive new film noir releases are out of stock. How can this be? The new titles they released last week "High Wall", "The Gangster", "Underworld Story", "The Sell Out", "Tomorrow is Another Day" and a host of others are not avaliable. Does anyone know what's the reasoning behind this?

Thanks, Robert.

That sale pushed me to place my first-ever archive order--for myself.  (I ordered once before for someone else).

I hadn't known that the '70s film One on One was available through the archives.  So I snatched that up and made an impulse buy of Never Too Late

I cannot find them either on the web site, however I received the all the titles except High Wall yesterday.  High Wall and Betrayed were held up.

I always wish-list titles I might want to own when they're announced each week. There's a lot up there now, and it's hard to keep track of it all.

Thanks for this information Robert.  Went to the Warner Archives website a few days ago and I placed a few items in my cart and left to another website (forgot to empty my cart). A few days later I got a $5 off coupon via email from Warner Archive. They said they noticed I left some items in my cart and left the site.  They let me use this coupon with the 30% off and free shipping!  I'm a Hanna Barbera fan and purchased Yogi First Christmas, cost me around $9.00 after coupons. Great deals.
