Warner Archive Discussion Thread (The Announcements/The Films) - Page 9

I think the very robust schedule is a robust schedule of films being re-released to DVD and going on Blu-Ray. I bet you the Noir set and Errol Flynn set will be the only classics released on traditional DVD by Warner in 2010. I expect a Harlow set in 2011, and perhaps a 75th anniversary release of Ambersons in 2017.

I may be "myopic" (literally, as it happens), but I can see a wild exaggeration a mile off.

And where are these announcements of pressed Noir and Flynn sets for 2010? I haven't seen them. Just more Archive crap.

And it's great to see James Cagney, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart will all be dumped in the Archive next year. Such obscure artists certainly "wouldn't have supported a regular commercial DVD release". As they haven't over the past decade, in the years when Warner was a company that took pride in itself.

No SHOW BOAT Trilogy?  No RAINTREE COUNTY?

Hmmmm...that Big Bands shorts set  sounds good. I might be getting that.

I think you're right. A robust finger in the face of all of us myopic film fans who have supported Warner -- until this year.

I think that the future for all pressed DVDs is bleak. I look at the shelves in stores such as HMV here in the UK, and see that Blu-ray is rapidly making phenomenal gains in shelf space. Studios will not want to go to the expense of having to press two formats and DVD as a format will disappear faster than I would have predicted a year ago. Not good news for classic film fans in the short term because it will take some time before the market base for Blu-ray is established sufficiently to enable the less well known classics to be profitable in that format - and that's assuming that even Blu-ray survives for long in the download era.

I'm not sure if this is a WB made to order release or not as I do not know when their ownship of MGM titles ended but amazon has Return to Paradise listed for a December 31st release for made to order DVD-R and listed as MGM.

Remember you can still watch your dvds on a bluray player!  The appeal of your collection will not be lost (from a viewing standpoint).

Good point.  I'm still a Blu-Ray holdout at present for a couple of reasons:

- Format is still relatively new so a lot of catalog titles and TV/DVD shows that I'd wabt to buy aren't available in the format yet.

- Region-Free: I've been waiting for some of my R-Free BR questions to get answered with the newer R-Free BR players.  Plus, the prices on those units are still a little high for me but as always, will drop in time.

There's a great 5 DVDs for $49.95 sale at the Archives, this time featuring the stars of Gone With The Wind. 29 films from the archives that feature GWTW's stars like Clark Gable, Olivia DeHavilland, Leslie Howard and even Hattie MacDaniel are available to choose from. Guess they forgot Ann Rutherford whose THEY ONLY KILL THEIR MASTERS is not part of the collection. Hopefully the sale will be in effect for awhile. Titles are:

Betrayed

Cain And Mabel

Call It A Day

Chained

Comrade X

Dance Fools Dance
Forsaking All Others

Four's A Crowd

Great Garrick

Hard To Get

Homecoming

Honky Tonk

Idiot's Delight

It's Love I'm After

Laughing Sinners

Love On The Run

Mad Miss Manton

Male Animal

Men In White

Out Of The Fog

Possessed

Princess O'Rourke

Shining Hour

I'm having an issue with the Archive site today. I put the 5 movies in for 49.99 and they go fine. But every time i move to checkout the prices revert to only 25% for a total of 74.99. Ive done this about 5 times with the same result each time. I hate this site. I will try again later. Some really good films in this sale.

By the way the code archive10 worked for 10% off of the bundle. At least till i got to checkout then everything went south.

I tried to order the Big Band Shorts about five times yesterday using two different credit cards but the system would not take my order.  Very aggravating.
Can any WB Archive veterans tell me if original trailers are included on a majority of the titles or only very few?  I can't find this information anywhere, most sites just say the title has no extras, but I'm fairly certain that at least some do include the trailer.  It would be nice if there was not only a master list of titles in the Archive thus far, but also an indication of which ones contain the trailers.

This is something of a selling point for me since very few of my TCM recorded DVD-Rs have the corresponding trailers on them. It's something I would really enjoy having and would make the Archive a little more attractive, especially since WB often filmed specific footage exclusively for the trailer (e.g. THE CRASH, THE BIG SLEEP, etc.).

Trailers on the Archives titles are inconsistent. The Archive titles in my collection that DO include the theatrical trailers are:

The Actress

All Fall Down

All the Brothers Were Valiant

The Citadel

Colorado Territory

Crisis

Distant Trumpet

Dream Wife

Goodbye My Fancy

H.M. Pulham Esquire
Hot Millions

Ice Follies Of 1939

Juke Girl

Lightning Strikes Twice

Made In Paris

Majority Of One

Man Who Loved Cat Dancing

Mannequin

Mating Game

Mike's Murder

Money Trap

Mrs. Parkington

Quentin Durward

Shining Hour

Story Of Three Loves

This Woman Is Dangerous

The Unfaithful

Weekend At The Waldorf

When Ladies Meet

I'm sure others can fill in the gaps.

Just placed an order for the 5 GWTW movies for 49.99 and it checked out fine, with free shipping.  I did not try to use a coupon code with it, though.
I just called the customer service and they told me i should sign in as a guest to buy the bundle and get the correct discount.

The problem is because i signed up for the reward insider which takes 25% off the movies automatically. So when i put the movies in my basket, they give me the 25% discount. But after 5 movies are in the basket   it doesn't go to the 49-95. It stays with just the 25% discount.

This is the first time I've had the reward discount override the sale. Sucks

I guess i'll end up ordering over the phone.

Thank you Thomas, I appreciate the input and will definitely use your information to make a master list, pending other contributions, which I hope will be forthcoming.

Has anyone been keeping track of all the Value Paks that have been offered (including the removed ones)?  I'd like to take advantage of the GWTW promotions, but don't want to order DVDs that may show back up in a Pak.

Allen, many thanks for contributing to my list of titles that include trailers!

It would be nice if they all did for the ones where the trailers still exist, but as with so many aspects of this fledgling project, there are a fair share of inconsistencies.  Still, there are definitely titles I am more interested in getting now that I know the trailers are included.  Thanks again, Thomas and Allen.

I'm sort of surprised WB didn't announce One Foot in Heaven with their Christmas titles.
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but checking their new release, OUR VINES HAVE TENDER GRAPES is for sale at archieves. A classic film with Edward G Robinson and Agnes Moorehead, and a great viewing.

BTW, they also have NESTOR THE LONG-EARED CHRISTMAS  DONKEY paired with another Rankin/Bass Christmas special LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF SANTA. I am almost certain NESTOR is availabe as part of a set with other Christmas stop animation program on Warner as a pressed disc for 5 bucks, so not sure what logic they have asking 19.95 for it.

Nestor was included on the pressed release of "The Year Without a Santa Claus".  LIFE has never been released, at least in region 1.

I can vouch that ALL THE MARBLES and URGH! A MUSIC WAR also have trailers.  I own ONE-TRICK PONY and right now I can't recall if it has a trailer, though; I want to say it doesn't even though one was made.

THE SERGEANT does not have it's trailer, but that one can be found on the HOMO PROMO DVD released by Strand.

The Singing Fool has a trailer. Say It With Songs does not. I just watched these these two Al Jolson titles this week.

RECKLESS claims it has a trailer, but whn you click it, you get the first 5 minute of the film.

There are several titles like that that were released the same week.  It is kind of frustrating.

Warner Archive is having their biggest sale yet on most Archive titles, to wit:

Over 380 Movies Reduced to $14.95 or Pick 10 DVDs for $99.95!

(Multi-disc sets and Value Packs aren't included)

Plus shipping is free on all Archive orders.

The sale ends on November 30.

BTW - you get the $14.95 price as you put titles in your cart.  When you reach ten titles the prices change to $10 each.  HOWEVER, if you sign into an Insider Rewards account all the prices revert to $14.95, even though you have 10 in the cart.  The rewards discount overrides the sale pricing.

My solution - I cleared my browser of any WB cookies, put ten titles in my cart, and then during checkout I registered using a different email address.  A bit annoying, I know,  but the order went through @ $99.95!

Just make that permanent, WA, and we're all set, as this is where I come in.  Thanks for the heads up, greylocke5.

Looks like you cant order any more than one set of tens (I tried to order 20, and it only ten out of twenty got the 10 for 99.95).
I would buy 10 for $100 if they shipped overseas.
