Warner Archive Discussion Thread (The Announcements/The Films) - Page 7

Frank and Scott,

Thanks. Well I came to an acceptable cost. Interesting, if I got the last two Gordon Scott Tarzans by themselves it was going to $40 - $10 (insider discount) + $10 for shipping and no tax, so $20 a piece, which is too much for me. Adding in Abe Lincoln of Illinois (found on my wishlist) for $20 - $5 + $5 shipping, brings it up to $60 for three movies, still too much.  Finally, Gordon Scott Tarzan set for $60 - $12 (discount) + $20 (Abe Lincoln) - $5 (discount) + free shipping and no tax comes to $62 total.

In the end, I got 7 films for $62 or 4 additional films for $2 (depending how you look at it). The other Gordan Scott movies aren't suppose to be nearly as good (don't remember them), but if they are any where close to being as good as some of the Barkers I will still get some enjoyment out of them. You definitely have to work to get a discount from WB. This will be my second order, or 12 film purchased from the archives.
Unless they do one more set to clean up the remaining Tarzans, this will likely be my last order.  There are a handful of titles I might be interested in, but not at 20 bucks a pop.  When they let me "build my own box", I might be back.  If I can't get it down to 10 per shipped, then I'm just not interested.

Gregory,

How do you find the list of upcoming titles?

Thanks,

Give a Girl a Break should be a part of those 50's musicals. And in place of those two older titles (So This Is Love, Interrupted Melody), how about putting in Small Town Girl and Holiday in Mexico which were recently added to the list.

Have any November discount codes been announced yet?

How do you find the covers? I'm asking so I can do this for myself on future release days.

If they are going to release GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE, I wish they add THE HORN BLOWS A MIDNIGHT at the same time.

I second that request.

Is there any assurance the Archive 'powers that be' will continue with ValuePaks in their own light or has this simply been a marketing strategy to get the Archive launched and established? There have been numerous opportunities to go further along this route without their having done so.

Money's the name of the game for them, so they'll do what they think works best for them, as they've been doing in the home video market for 30 years. Now they're dabbling with selling through other suppliers, at higher asking prices, with varying discounts, some with no sales tax and free shipping, also on a MOD basis. You can check out deepdiscount.com and videocollection.com and determine for yourselves if there's any merit in my gut feelings.

Also, I hope posters will lighten up in their using the term 'PD quality' re Archive titles; this may be true in a few instances, but as a rule the term 'broadcast quality' is more appropriate when it comes to stuff shown on TCM. To we oldtimers, I'm 75, PD quality brings more often than not back images of 'white box' VHS crap, not necessarily true public domain material.

They made a feature film of the show THEN CAME BRONSON I recall. WOW!  ALOT of very obscure TV movies! But glad DEADLY TOWER got announced, one of the most suspensful TV movies I have ever seen!

FLIGHT OF THE DRAGON is a Rankin/Bass animation, and a good one at that.

Also odd they are releasing GATHERING 2, when the first one is the more popular and much in demand release. I am going to assume it isnt controlled by WB.

Another source, though also costly, for Warner Archive MOD titles is:

http://www.ccvideo.com/room.cfm?roomid=237

Critics Choice is a sister operation to Deep Discount and Video Collection, all part of Infinity Resources in Itasca IL. DVD Planet, also an IR operation, could be next. Will be interesting to see if their various periodic coupons and semi-annual sales will result in lower 'delivered' prices; don't hold your breath.

It looks like international collectors prepared to pay high shipping costs can buy from some of these sources, hopefully in the same range we US collectors pay for our overseas purchases.

It's good to see another company selling the Warner Archive discs. Sadly it is even more expensive for international sales than TCM.com and MoviesUnlimited. It would cost US$72.42 for 2 DVDs, or about $80 Australian. To put that in context, I only paid AUD$77 for the Columbia Sam Fuller set that contains 7 films on new transfers, with extras, on pressed discs.

Bonnie Bedelia is on the cover of THEN CAME BRONSON.  My guess is that it will be the two hour tv movie that served as the pilot for the series.

It's about time Warners  released the Gordon Scott Tarzan films. I orderd the six disc collection by telephone yesterday and was told  it will take about seven days before it can be shipped. I have waited a long time for these movies and want them as soon as possible and do not want to wait weeks for the package to arrive. I  live in Hawaii and the two day shipping option is not available  and the the discs will be sent to me by USP First Class. I was a member of  BMG Music and the CDs I ordered from them took forever to arrive via the same method the G.S Tarzan movies are going to be shipped. For those of you who had discs shipped vis the US postal system, did you have to wait long for your discs to arrive?

I wish they would add the value packs back. This month is my birthday and there are a few I want to purchase.

Still no discount code for November?
SHIP30

No charge for shipping for an order of $30 or more instead of the normal $60 or more.
SHIP30 didn't work for me when I applied it to a Warner Archive order, though.
Why are some movies not searchable but if you "stumble" upon them like SO FINE you can order them? Just bizarre.

I just ordered the Gordon Scott Tarzan value pack and it worked -- and the code XB1C92 also took another $12 off, stacking with it.

However, other codes like XB992/REWARD25 still work with some titles -- but not the Gordon Scott value pack. Oddly I placed another order for several WB Archive titles and the free shipping was applied automatically (said something about a holiday promotion on the shipping details, even though I didn't spend $60). Go figure!

I also couldn't get any codes at all to work with the Robert Benchley shorts.

Like anything else that website seems to be trial and error in terms of getting some promos to work, and you have to mix and match to get free s/h and the discounts together. Just plain weird.

I really wish they would do a subscription service. I don't mind buying 3-4 titles a month at $10-$15 each, and it would save us all the pain of trying to use old codes, new codes, and all the other headaches that website necessitates.

The execution of this program is shoddy in the extreme.

Poorly designed webpage? They should just remove all the Flash, it would make it a lot easier to navigate.
I did get XB992/REWARD25 to work, thanks.
Thanks once again for reminding us of some codes which might work. It's always worth a try if one has items he's looking to buy.
I just looked at Small Town Girl and it is in great shape.  The transfer is clean and crisp with good color.  I almost get the feeling the transfer was done for a regular DVD release for a Musical Collection that was aborted.  It looks much better than some of the past musicals that were released through Warner Archive.
XB1C92 worked for me today.
All of the 1980s and 90s titles are $15 each for a limited time. No other discounts are applicable on them, but that's still a terrific deal.

Free shipping too (you don't need a coupon either, it's automatically applied at checkout).
