What's the deal with the codes? Haven't seen one in forever....
Allegedly, Norma's performance was an exact replica of Lynn Fontanne's stage work in the role, and at the time she received some criticism for such an obvious copy, so much so that she didn't earn an Oscar nomination for her performance (which removed from decades of comparisons) plays beautifully now.

Which ending made it to DVD- the domestic ending, or the more spiritual European one (which I prefer)?

The upbeat domestic ending.

Looks like we are both disapointed this time.  Their anouncement for the month of October does not include any Horror/Mystery.
I'm also very disappointed to not see any horror or thriller titles so far this month.  There's probably one more Tuesday with new releases coming this month, so the next announcements will tell us what we need to know--good or bad.

Are you serious??? Wow. Way to miss the boat Warner. Not everyone in interested in the classics and musicals thank you. I give up...

Is there not anymore announcements for this month? I will be really dissapointed if they come through (as will a lot of others). No offense but not everyone is into classics or musicals and the folks behind WB Archive should know this.

There will be another group of films announced on October 20, but there are not any horror/mystery titles in the group.  There some westerns and controversial classics among some other older titles.  And the complete collection of Robert Benchley shorts.

Over it and the Archive site.

What a slap in the face to horror fans. And to think that I waited impatiently for October to arrive ever since this initative was announced - hoping they would deliver something more than Razorback or Don't Be Afraid of the Dark in the summer. Night School, in particular, has even been requested in for chat's with WB over the years. Really dissapointed.

Allen, if you're correct, I'm extremely disappointed in Warner's total lack of response to Halloween.  They will probably release westerns and musicals all year round, which is fine for those who collect them.  I do not consider made-for-TV sci-fi films to be satisfactory Halloween-time product, although I'm glad to see that stuff come out.  Should I gather that FROM HELL IT CAME didn't sell well?

You mention controversial classics: any particular titles?  I loved the first Warner box set of controversial classics.

The controversial classics are GABRIEL OVER THE WHITE HOUSE, THEY WON'T FORGET, CONFESSIONS OF A NAZI SPY, THE MORTAL STORM, MISSION TO MOSCOW, and THE MASTER RACE.  They were more political in their controversy and MISSION TO MOSCOW was actually suggested by Roosevelt to Jack Warner as propaganda to help with Russian relations.

You can check out the entire list for October on Ron's post #78 in this thread.  Again I bemoan the fact there is not horror, but FROM HELL IT CAME appears to be selling well and I hope we see some more horror/mystery titles soon.  Keep the faith.

And don't forget, while the quality may not always represent this, at least ALPHA and VCI release pressed discs and at a fraction of the cost WB is charging for Archive titles.  What is the difference between them? While Alpha and VCI deal mainly with public domain films and presumably don't have to pay for rights, WB doesn't either, they own all the titles that are in the archives.  How can lowly ALPHA afford to make pressed DVDs of what are often essentially unknown and forgotten films and charge relatively little for them, yet WB can't for such titles as THE STRAWBERRY BLONDE, which are certainly more established and revered?  If it's not gouging fans, then what is it?

I apologize in going off topic for the purposes of this specific thread, but I am responding to the quote below, which was originally posted herein.

Agreed, and it's an easier sell because the condition of elements is miles ahead given they are sourced from first gen. telecines so they'd just be pressing them up and porting them over directly. Anyways, it's ground that's been covered already so...

Warners Archives has just added the 6 Al Jolson films (WONDER BAR, GO INTO YOUR DANCE, THE SINGING FOOL, THE SINGING KID, SAY IT WITH SONGS, BIG BOY) to their "value paks". All 6 for $59.95! Alas, I'm not a Jolson fan ... still waiting for them to bundle those Elizabeth Taylor titles!
Late last night I received an email about the 6 Al Jolson bundle and also the announcement of the 3 disc special edition of The Jazz Singer -1927.  It may only be available from WBShop since I haven't seen it advertised at Movies Unlimited or anywhere else.  It is listed at $32.95 but they are offering a 20% discount for $26 and change through their website.

They also just posted Mission to Moscow for pre-order, most likely to be released Oct 20.  I'm still waiting for their Women of Warner pack and not ordering and Lupino or Sheridan titles...
Great news about the Jolson pack. I'll head there directly.
Wasn't one of the Jolson films supposed to be released in a restored version? Is that film (I cannot recall the title) included here?

Mammy!

Glad I waited for the Jolson's to be bundled. They're now ordered. Heads up, though: None of my old codes seems to work on this, including ARCHIVE10 and REWARD25.

"None of my old codes seems to work on this, including ARCHIVE10 and REWARD25"

Peter, I had the same problem my last order and when I called the customer services line, I was told that those codes should never have been used more than once but a computer glitch (since rectified, dammit) allowed it. Now the computer knows you've used it and won't allow you to use it again. I haven't received or seen a new code in over a month!
Thomas T: Thanks for the info. I thought that might be the case.
Oh yes, MAMMY - Thanks!
Sorry to disappoint, but I got the same email, and MAMMY is not one of the six titles. But I think someone here at HTF said Warners was going to restore it and release it as a pressed disc. The six titles in the bundle are THE SINGING FOOL (1928) , SAY IT WITH SONGS ('29), BIG BOY ('30), WONDER BAR ('34) , GO INTO YOUR DANCE ('35), THE SINGING KID ('36).

I think the question was what film was to be restored.  Warners said that they are going to restore Mammy and release it as an Archives release sometime at the end of the year or first of 2010.  The film was first announced for release with the other titles, but pulled within 24 hours of posting.  The bundle is the original six titles released and the bundle might be indicate that Mammy is on it's way.

If that's true, I misunderstood. My bad.  Anyway, If anyone misunderstood the way I did, those are the titles being offered.

Got a new survey email.  A new coupon for 10% off - WACSURVEY2
post #150 of 3333
I received the survey e-mail as well.  I would include a link so others can take it, but it appears to be a single-use URL.  The survey seemed to focus on two topics: 1) The name of the program ("what does the name 'Warner Archive Collection' mean to you?"), and a possible subscription service in which you would commit to at least a 6-month period under certain terms (1 DVD per month at $17.95, 2 DVDs per month at $29.95, 3 DVDs per month at $39.95).  Unused purchase in a month can be rolled over to subsequent months.  Some possible subscription features included the option to include a Director commentary or other special features, enhanced packaging, a digital download to watch while wating for your DVD to arrive, discount packages, the ability to influence future Archive releases, and access to WB experts in chats and studio tours.
