Small form factor receiver?

Hi All,

Looking to buy a receiver for TV/DVD/DVR use.  Problem is I don't want to buy a new stand for the LG 37" TV and the space below is filled with Cox DVR, Sony DVD.  Not much room to improve the sounds so am currently using just the TV built-in speakers.  Of course they suck.  Can anyone suggest a decent receiver with HDMI and a small size?  I have a Sony without HDMI but it would take up the whole space.  Less than $300 would be nice as well.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

Small size, less than $300.  Improvement over TV speakers.  The only thing that comes to mind is a  better set of 5.1 PC speakers.  I have an Logtech Z5300 which work quite well in a 11X12 room.  But a system like this would not have HDMI.  For that you are going to have to find some room for a receiver and spend over $300.

From what I have seen I have to agree with you.  Messing around with HDMI from DVR to TV has also uncovered an out-of-sync problem with voices and lips.  I hope getting a receiver would cure that problem, but not sure why it would help.  Would throwing a HDMI in/out receiver just make it worse?

LG tech came out and updated the TV firmware.  That cured the out of sync problem for many channels, but some that are showing older movies still have lips out of sync.  This tells me that the source material and the method of getting it out does make a difference.  The LG tech did say that he has seen receivers cure the problem as well, but to me it seems that adding more processing in the stream is not going to help.  Twinkies don't get any better by running them through the factory one more time.
