OUCH! I bit my lip... again!

I have an area behind my right lower front lip which I am constatly accidentally biting while eating.   Biting hard - hard enough to draw blood.   It swells up a bit causing me to be even more likely to bite it until it gets so bad that I am constantly aware of it.  At that point I can avoid it long enough to heal and the swelling subsides....   until the next time I bite it and the cycle begins again.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Other than removing my front teeth what can I do?   It happened to me yesterday at a very important conference while I was having a conversation over continental breakfast with some executives.   It nearly drew tears it hurt so bad.   Suffice to say I was embarrassed.  I really need to find a way to avoid this happening again.

"Wow, it's hard to imagine someone with so much biting experience can still make a mistake like that." -Jerry Seinfeld.

Seriously youch! I do that occasionally and with me it usually becomes a canker sore that lasts for weeks.

I don't have a problem doing that to my front lip but I occasionally do it with my molar to the inside of my cheek. Ouch!

Same here.

If it is a particular tooth that catches it, you can ask your dentist to shave down some of the surface of that tooth. Is it one of your fangs that catches it? You'd think you can't shave down the surface of your teeth, but in fact the fang teeth have a really thick outer layer. The back molars are also thick enough to be reshaped, but they aren't your problem.

I know this because I once went to a dentist who had an absolute fetish for getting people's teeth and jaw to align properly. He reshaped a bunch of my molars so that when I bite down, pressure is even across all the molars. I'd bite down on a piece of blue ink-like paper-like substance, which would leave a trace of ink on the teeth to show him where the points of contact were, and he'd shave them down, and then I'd rebite, etc., until it was all even.

Also I once bit a piece of one of my fangs off when I was a kid, and it was fine.

...Hey -- alternately, you might need one of your lower teeth built up, so it pushes your lip out of the way. A dentist will be able to help you! They're not just for cavities.

Thanks Will, I'll mention it next time I wee my dentist.

John - I have found that rinsing my mouth twice a day for a few days after a bite or other injury prevens the bite from turning to a canker sore.

Hey guys; Use a mouthwash called Biotene. It works real good for killing bacteria in the mouth causing the sores to heal quite fast. Its also used for cancer patients and victims of dry mouth as well. Its workewd well for me when Ive bit the inside of my mouth.

You can pick it up at any Target, WalMart or any other pharmacy.

Sure, but man, why wait? You're regularly in pain over this.

I used to have this problem as well.  I'd get several canker sores at once, and they'd daisy chain so I'd go months before I'd be free of one.  After a bad one my wife encouraged me, again, to look for a solution.  I finally discovered that taking Lysine (an amino acid) all but cured me of the damn things.  I still get them but not nearly as often, and they last a week at most and rarely hurt.

This tends to happen to me in cycles too.  I have a bit of an overbite and sometimes I bite my lower lip so hard I hear a crunching sound!  I hate that.

Wow so I'm not alone.   This is by far one of the most annoying things in the world.  It happens to me usually when I'm really enjoying something I'm eating.   On me it's usually in the front area of my mouth.   Like most it swells causing me to bite the same area over and over. I usually bite hard enough for my teeth to cut through the flesh and hit hard enough to hurt my teeth to say nothing of the inside of my mouth.

Mine ends up hurting for days and I find myself wanting to bite the white sore even when not eating.
