Trying to See if a DVD is Defective

Is there software that will verify how much data is supposed to be on a disc and how much is readable? I have a disc that pixelates and want to know if it has any hope of working when cleaned.

Just clean it and try it again. It takes less than a minute to clean one.
Is it a store bought dvd or a home made?

It's store bought. Cleaning doesn't work and I want to see if it'll be worth it to buy a DVD restorer/cleaner. But I'd still like to know if there's software that verifies data on a DVD.

I would be surprised if there's anything out there that can do what you want.  How would the software know how much data is "supposed" to be on the DVD?

The data on a replicated DVD is physically pitted into the disc surface, and then covered and protected by a relatively thick plastic coating.  The scratches in this coating cause the reading laser to scatter, producing the artifacts you describe.  The only solution is to remove the scratches, which can be achieved, but only to a point.  If the scratches are too severe, the data (while still intact) is simply inaccessible.

Unlike magnetic media, the data on a DVD can't be "corrupted" without causing catastrophic physical damage to the disc itself.

The only time that data on physical media can be "verified" that I know of is immediately following the write process (like CD-R's) but in this case, you (as the creator of the media) have the actual data source to compare against.

Some pawn shops and game stores have an expensive machine, that will buff scratches out, and make the disc like new. They usually charge about $2 per disc. Call around and see if a local shop has one of these.

The Disc Rx machines work sometimes, but not all the time. I have one, but quit using it. It leaves patterns on the disc. Have you tried the disc in another player? Some players read better than others............
