At last! Moulin Rouge on Blu-ray!

Was very nice to read Bill Hunt's blurb about Fox planning
to finally roll out Moulin Rouge to Blu-ray in the upcoming
months.

This was sort of unexpected.  I talked to Fox about this
title a year ago and was told that Baz would personally
have to work on the release but was tied up with other
projects.  Since then, there was a bit of a shakeup at Fox
and I really wasn't able to readily pursue any updates on
its release.   I am just hoping that Baz is involved with
the project.

Moulin Rouge was a bit of an eye-opener for me.  I
remember when it was released theatrically, I had no
desire to see the film.  Didn't seem like the kind of
movie I would be interested in.   Wasn't until I was
given a screener copy prior to its DVD release that
I realized what a brilliantly inventive musical this was.
It kind of took the an old concept and made it seem so
brand new with its incorporation of modern pop music
into a musical template.  At least, that's the best way
I know to describe it.

Suffice to say, when the DVD came out Home Theater
Forum (with thanks to Peter Staddon) was credited as
voting it DVD OF THE YEAR.  I had the opportunity
to meet Baz Luhrmann and tell him how much the film
affected me personally.

Haven't watched the DVD in a long time, mostly for
the reason that the Dolby Digital track is the way to
hear it, and it's defective.   In fact, I am not certain it
was ever fixed.  There is a synch issue where the
soundtrack is a half second ahead or behind the dialogue.

....which is why I am so pleased to see this being
released in a high resolution format and most assuredly
with fixed audio.   Will be looking forward to the official
press release.

Ron, I was the same way with Moulin Rouge, except in my story I don't get to name-drop Peter Staddon.

Can't wait for this film in high definition!  One of my favorite DVD releases.  Be nice to see it get some attention.

A definite must buy. Done properly, MOULIN ROUGE should be of demo quality.

Maybe my memory is failing me, but wasn't it the DTS track that was out of sync?

I do recall it was the DTS track as well - that's what upset so many people was that it was thought the DTS track would (and should) be superior, and it wasn't simply due to the syncing error.

Anyway, I agree with Larry - done properly this should be reference quality material!

Your memory isn't failing you.  It is failing me.

It was the DTS track that was out of sync.

Thanks for clearing that up, and my apologies.

This is one of three films I absolutely can't wait to upgrade (along with Amélie and Die Hard 4).  It will be mine on release day!
Any idea of when we'll see the press release or is there a release date set yet?
^ The Digital Bits said "By the way, we've learned from industry sources that Fox will likely announce the release of Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge! on Blu-ray in the weeks ahead..." so it sounds to me like it'll be out for the holidays or very early next year.

Fox never admitted to a defect, it was all in our mind, a mob hallucination.

The intoxicating effect from the Green Fairy........

Ooooh. Green Fairy. Since I'm out of scotch and my wife broke the bottle of cognac last week, I should pull my bottle of the stuff out of its hiding place.

Thanks for the reminder Ron-P!

I'll be interested to see if there is an improvement in image quality with the Blu release.  I have the D-Theater version and that is a pretty spectacular transfer.  No doubt some improvement in audio with a DTS Master track over the D-Theater 576 kb/s Dolby Digital track.

HaHa. I've got about a half bottle left, needless to say I wait an partake of it the day I pick up this gem of a film and enjoy both.

I am very much looking forward to Moulin Rouge in Blu.

I have always loved the DTS track on the DVD (except, of course, for the lip-sync issue).  It should be unbelievable in lossless audio.

Any "offical" word on this title yet?

Not yet.  I would suspect not until next year.

What happened to the "The Digital Bits said "By the way, we've learned from industry sources that Fox will likely announce the release of Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge! on Blu-ray in the weeks ahead..."

Did Bill Hunt say "the weeks ahead?"

I don't have the exact quote in front of me.

He's merely reporting that they are working on the title.

If it were going to be a Christmas release we are past
the announcement date.  If they are looking for a
February window then perhaps something will be
announced shortly.

You can't always time these things.

Yeah. He said "By the way, we've learned from industry sources that Fox will likely announce the release of Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge! on Blu-ray in the weeks ahead..." Like you said though, it's not an exact science and I originally posted that quote on September 20 so it's not like it's really been that long since Bill Hunt said it.

Maybe they're going for a tie-in with Valentine's Day?

Sounds plausible, since that would also be about the time a home video release of The Men Who Stare at Goats would be.

Typical Bill Hunt, I should have know better. When I read "weeks ahead", that means with in three or four weeks, at most.

The studio know's exactly when they plan to release titles, it's all about timing.

Not always, Ron.

All we know the title is being prepp'd.

Perhaps there is no release window selected yet.

Furthermore, when it comes to dates set in stone
you of all people, a veteran of this forum, should
know those dates always change.

Heck, there is Warner stuff that was supposed
to be out 3 years ago despite the fact it has been
in the preparation stages since then.

Valentines Day sounds reasonable at this point.

I signed up to be notified by Amazon when it becomes available.
