Where To Place Audyssey Mic

I have the Onkyo HT-SP908 which has the Onkyo 605 receiver.
When I use the Audyssey to set up the speakers, where exactly should I place the mic?  I have the mic mounted on a tripod.  I have the height of the tripod adjusted so that it is around ear level if I'm sitting on the couch.  However, I'm confused on where to physically place the tripod.  Do I place it in front of the couch as close as possible to the center position.  This would be about 2-3 in front of where I would physically be if sitting on the couch.  Also where do I place the tripod for the left and right readings when the Audyssey program instructs me?  I have the seven speakers that came in the HTIB.  The center, left & right speakers are mounted above and on the sides of the plasma TV.  The left and right surround speakers are mounted immediately about 5 feet to the left and right of the side of the couch.  The surround left and right back speakers are mounted about 5 feet behind the left and right corners of the couch.
Thanks for any replies.

You set the tripod in the seat that you'll sit in. Not in front of it, but IN the seat, right where your butt will be. The mic should point towards the ceiling, and be ear height while in the seat. For the other readings, place the tripod in the seats that other people will sit in. That's all there is to it.

It also sounds like the front speakers are mounted too high. Ideally, the tweeter in front speakers, should be about ear height, when sitting down. Even though they are smaller speakers, they shouldn't be mounted too high.
