Survivor - Samoa - Page 7

No, not really, you can be a used car salesman who's smart enough to bring a more unlikable guy to the final tribal council to secure the votes in your favor.

And you can have some really head-scratching finals:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Twila vs. Chris
Ethan vs. Kim
Sandra. vs. Lillian
Parvati vs. Amanda
Nelah vs. Vecepia
Todd vs. Amanda vs. Courtney
Jenna vs. Matthew
Yul vs. Ozzy vs. Becky
Stephenie vs. Danni
Earl vs. Cassandra vs. Dreamz

Most of the time, the most "deserving" contestant seldom wins because they have to work hard just to sniff the finish line, while others play a slightly different game of being able to not be in the forefront of people's thoughts when it's time to go to tribal council (while not being just "under the radar"), but rather have better people skills, or better game theory ideas put into practice in order to keep the target off themselves while offering others to be ousted before them in the game.  Some are just plain lucky to "float" and still make it to the end by not being perceived as a physical threat, it's all tied in social dynamics, and just being a physical threat of winning immunity challenges or even finding HII's might not be enough to win when it gets down to 4-5 players left because you still have to work the jury, the people you had a hand in placing in the jury box through gameplay.

His cocky confidence reminds me a lot of Richard Hatch (season 1 winner). Though RH wasn't deliberately emptying water cans etc :)

Not to sound like a broken record, but being the best (or only) player in a season doesn't justify getting as much as 19 times the average airtime of the other contestants in a given episode (somebody at Sucks did the calculations). He's entertaining but not nearly enough to earn such an unprecedented domination of show time.

When you get right down to it, he deserves to win.

Again, I wouldn't say that. He's the best strategic player this season no doubt. But his social game is inconsistent at best. Sure, Foa Foa and Shambo love him--but I can't see Kelly, Laura, or Monica (who knows/cares about Brett) ever voting for him.

What worries me is that once people see he has the
upper hand in the game they are going to vote him out.

Eh, my guess is he's in the final three. He's obviously smart enough to get there but more importantly why would anyone not want to face him in the end? He's alienated enough people and jurors that vote purely based on strategic merit are few and far between.

ETA: Looks like a clip show this week. :(

When Russell found that third idol I nearly fell out of my chair. While his personality might be a little much to take at times he's certainly the most skilled player in the game and for that I tip my cap to him.
I laughed my ass off when Russell found that third idol....especially after he ditched Dave in a run to do it.....that guy has been a major source of entertainment this season and is definitely the most skilled player I've seen on any season of survivor.  Also loved it when Laura blew the immunity challenge and Shambo broke out laughing because she couldn't contain her glee.   This season is just classic.

 A few more SAB's:

Crispin Glover & Brett

Keyser Soze & Dave Ball

The Elephant Man & Dave Ball

Gilly & Laura

Kevin Spacey & Dave Ball

Only one more Wicked Stepsister to go.

Hanson:  How about Dave Ball and Scott Adsit (Pete Hornberger from 30 Rock)?  That's who I think of every time I see him.
I see that too, but Adsit seems too unremarkable/obscure to use in a SAB.  Sort of like, "Shambo looks like my co-worker!"
Aw, c'mon...

30 Rock just won 600 Emmys...and  Nobel Peace Prize, I think!
All right...here's my humble attempt (I'll never reach Hanson's standards, however):

lol @ Gilly & Laura.
It dawned on me that the next person to go should be Brett -- there isn't anyone left in old Galu that can put together an insurgent alliance to take out Foa Foa.  Brett has Monica and Dave in his back pocket and can probably swing Shambo if he plays his cards right.  John is easily swayed by numbers.  If he can figure out which Galu is on the low end of the totem pole, he could try to get someone from that tribe to flip.  Once Brett is gone, there is no hope for anyone to challenge Foa Foa.

Thank god it's a recap show this week.....I completely forgot about it and thought I missed an actual episode.  I would have been pissed had that happened considering what's been going on as of late.

Gotta say, there was some good stuff in the clip show, lots of new scenes that were cut for time.  My wife had no intention of watching it at all (she never watches the clip shows), but she happened to catch the first scene and then sat through the entire episode.  So it wasn't a total waste of time.  You can read about what you missed here.

The best clip you didn't see was Shambo and Laura at the beach, where Shambo sobs about missing her dead brother and sister while Laura's half-hearted and distracted attempts at consolation are hilarious in their stunning lack of empathy (sample exchange: Shambo:"My sister died of cancer!"  Laura:"Oh you poor dear.  Now where's our sun?").

Hanson, that SHAMBORELLA is hilarious.

Man, you are brilliant!

The longer Russel stays in the game the more hilarious this is.  Ousting John was the right move for almost everyone but single track Shambo who is off in lala land.  (and was she crazier the normal this week?)

The preview for next week is another mislead.  And even if they are suspicious of Russel there is no way most of them can turn on him, not now...
Personally, I thought that was one of the best tribal councils ever.

I'm definitely curious to see what Shambo's reaction is going to be in next week's episode.
I don't think it's fair to say Shambo was in LaLa Land.  She was, once again, left out of the loop.  Jaison was completely right about not telling her.  Would it have really been so hard for Russell to pull her off to the side and say (in a no spoiler way) "Look, I know you really want X to go but everyone is voting for Y.  Vote with us and we'll work on X next time."  She might argue but really, what could she do?  Tell her right before leaving for TC so there'll be no time to change minds.

Does she have any kind of alliance with Russell or did they just take her under their wings and she'll be the last to go of her own tribe?

Who is that guy in the 80s style tshirt?  Is he on the show or is he some crew member who keeps getting in the shots?  Who's betting he pulls a Vecepia and wins it?
I don't even know his name, but I wouldn't be suprised if all a sudden he wins immunities and makes it to the final three.

Brett, he is possibly the most invisible person to ever play the game, the cameramen don't even see fit to follow him around any more. I can see him going far simply by staying under the radar but if it came down to him pleading his case to the jury as to why he should win I don't think even he could come up with anything.

A.F.A. Shambo being in LA LA land, maybe not but she is playing a dumb game based on emotion rather than strategy, it may be better to leave her out of the loop.
Russell is crazy genius! It blows my mind that he can talk to almost every person on this freakin show and get them to go along with a plan he devised and yet when the person is blindsided, they always blame other people for it other than Russell! He can make anyone think his plans are theirs and they fall for it hook line and sinker!

John was definitely the right choice to go this time. I also agree that Russell should have told Shambo, atleast to say hey they are all deciding to vote this way, so lets get Dave next week. Honestly though I really don't think Russell has much to worry about because the way he can convince people, I'm sure he will have Shambo under his spell again soon.

As for Brett!?! Yeah he is definitely under the radar.

Survivor auction was great. I was suprised that Russell never spoke up and bid on anything. Strategy? Maybe he figures his luck with the HII, it's only fair to let the others have something too! LOL!
In the beginning I couldn't stand Russel, but he makes this season.  Last night's tribal was the what, 4th or 5th blindside in a row?

John's facial reactions were great.  The first John vote he was still smiling all cocky - no way I'm going home.  Second John vote, - what the hell this isn't how I worked it out with my slide rule.  Third John vote and on - complete shock.

Awesome
This season keeps getting better and better.  Definitely my
favorite thus far.

Russell is controlling the game, no doubt.  He screws up and
tells John he has the Idol and at that point he manages to
change everyone's vote from DAVE to JOHN.

It had to be done.  Nobody should know Russell has that
idol.  And with John being the only person who had the
clue and knew it wasn't there -- he was the perfect choice
to go.
Best line of the night:

Dve Ball:  If this vote goes the way I think it's going to go tonight, then I'll be surprised.

They never said how the boiled chicken turned out.

If people have cash left after the auction, do they get to keep it? If not, why not bid on something?

Why does Jeff keep calling Dave "Dave Ball" when he's the only Dave on the show? He doesn't call the others by their full names, even though there were 2 Russells

From what I understand, the auction, like all challenges and tribal councils, is heavily edited.  If there isn't anything interesting about, say, Brett winning a plate of cookies or something (which, of course, there isn't) then they just don't show it.  If you think about the stuff they showed, it went:

1) Natalie PB&J because it kicked off the auction
2) Shambo's booby prize
3) Monica's non-booby prize
4) Jaison's advantage
5) Mick's big ass burger and beer to make Jaison regret spending al of his money
6) Immunity Idol clue
7) Natalie showering
8) The apple pie

All of which were significant enough to show.  So they probably left the rest of the stuff on the cutting room floor.  Incidentally, I've read that some of the Tribal Councils go on for hours.  What you see is a fraction of what is recorded.

Jaison's observation about Shambo was spot on.  That move may have been an act of hubris on Russell's part.  He did give in about voting off Ben earlier, and that was the right move at the time.

Dave's proclamation that he "won those chickens" was very lame since it didn't matter who won the chickens -- they would still be in camp regardless.  He he not won, someone else would have, so it's kind of moot.

That's a great point about the chickens, Hanson.

I also would have liked to know how well of a job
Shambo did cooking them.  Was Dave happy?

Question: Has a female ever won Survivor?

Plenty of women have won Survivor.  Off the top of my head, Tina in Season 2, Vecepia, Sandra, Amber & Pavarti (both won All-Stars), Danni (who beat Stephanie, so it was an all-girl final) and Jenna Morasco.  I'm sure I've left out one or two others.
