On friday, I spoke with the new head of DC Entertainment, Diane Nelson, who offered up some thoughts on how the recent changes in and around Warner Brothers will affect Superman, Batman and the rest of DC's stable of characters in comics, movies and various other media.

However, one particular portion of the interview seemed to merit its own post. While discussing some of the specific projects on the horizon for DC ("Ryan Reynolds can be anything he wants to be," said Nelson of the "Green Lantern" star's ability to play both Hal Jordan and the Marvel character Deadpool in upcoming films), the conversation eventually turned to one of the company's most iconic characters: Superman.

"We actually don't have any current plans for Superman," said Nelson when asked if the new environment (and the recent legal decision regarding the character) made a "Superman" movie more or less likely in the near future.

We recently ranked Superman as one of the most important properties for WB to prioritize in their new, movie-friendly arrangement regarding DC, so it was interesting to hear that the company currently has no plans for the Man of Steel.

Nelson then reiterated her stance on the lack of action on the Superman front, while acknowledging the character's importance in the DC universe.

"We've obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it's a key part of the family, but we don't have current plans behind Superman," she said.

With rumored "Superman" director James McTeigue recently offering his own take on what he'd do with the Man of Steel if given the chance, Nelson's comments certainly call into question how far along any plans might be—and whether we'll believe a man can fly again any time soon.

I'm actually a little relieved, I always thought that the proposed reboot was a bad idea.

Maybe they'll take their time and come up with something great in the future.

What legal decision was made regarding Superman? Did it have anything to do with the families of the creators?

Edit:

I should have googled before posting. Looks like Warner loses the copyright to the character in 2013. At that time it reverts back to the families of the creators. Score one for the creators of popular properties. I hope DC and Warners end up having to pay a shitload of money to the families. From what I have heard DC's treatment of Schuster and Siegel was abominable.

Getting back to the topic, it would appear that Warner would have to launch a new Superman production by 2011 in order to avoid any potential copyright problems.

This thread should be merged into the existing Superman thread, which was discussing this.

I'd give the link, but the new search function confounds me. I found several earlier Superman threads but not the one that was current up through a month ago. UPDATE: FOUND IT! The new search function presents results in reverse order, from least recent to most recent. I had to go through several hundred pages to get to it:

I hope they don't launch a new production.
With the exception of the Richard Donner film, I'm not impressed with Warner Brothers various versions of Superman.
Superman Returns was depressing and discouraging.
Creatively Warner Brothers made nothing but bad decisions from the inside out.
Or to put it another way, every creative decision they made was wrong-headed.
Turning Clark Kent into the latest stereotype of a "dead beat Dad" while a pouting Lois pairs off with another man whose plane is there when she needs it is a political correctness run riot.
I don't want to see another Superman movie like the last one.
It proved the franchise is in the wrong hands.
I look forward to a change and hope for a more traditional approach that celebrates the virtues of Superman instead of subverting them.

When Superman behaves like a mortal, he is no longer super.
Superman can be a melancholy observer of humanity, but he flies only because he is above mortal failings.

I agree.

IMO the movie franchise died the moment Spacey's Lex Luthor stabbed Superman in the side with a shard of kryptonite.

This is terrible news.  I was hoping for Superman II: Superbaby!  How lame would that look to have a reboot, then do another reboot of that reboot 4-5 years later.  They should shelve this for a while.

I also hope we don't see another Super Man film. The last one was horrible. Of course with Singer at the helm, it's no wonder.

Super Man died when Reeve's finished playing the Man of Steel. Let's hope Warner stay's far away from making anymore Super Man films.
