Having trouble placing speakers - OH what to do?

How do i go about laying out my speakers in a room shaped like this? The indent where my Projection screen is about 6.5' wide by 5' deep the main room is 16' wide x 11' deep. I am really concerned with the placement of the two front speakers? Should i leave them on the foor next to the entertainment stand or should i pull them into the main room? The center channel speaker will remain directly under the screen in the cubby.

I would think that you'd be OK pulling the mains forward a little bit to help reduce the impact of having the corner of the wall in the way.  You could also toe them in ever so slightly.  If your receiver has an auto-setup utility (like Audyssey on the Onkyos) then it can compensate for the shorter distance if necessary.  Actually, according to the Dolby spec for speaker placement, the front 3 speakers should be equidistant from the main listening position, so the mains SHOULD be slightly in front of the center anyway.

The good news, at least based on your rough drawing, is that the layout appears to be closely symmetrical.  In my opinion, that's easier to deal with than, say, a corner layout with an open wall on one side.

Thank you so much. I think i might try to pull the two fronts forward and mount them on the wall at ear height. I will leave the center where it is. Do you think the sub. wouldbe OK between the front and the mid rear speaker on the right hand side?

Sub placement is a bit more flexible for a couple of reasons.  First, the desired effect is non-directional (i.e. you don't want to know where the sound is coming from) so anywhere that you can achieve this should work fine and secondly, by adjusting the subs crossover (either in the sub itself or the receiver) and it's volume level, you can effectively tweak the subwoofer to work quite well in just about any room and with just about any main speaker system.

Personally, I think you'll be fine there - provided that you take the time to properly calibrate the speaker levels and correctly set your crossover so that the subwoofer works efficiently with the rest of your system.  More than anything else, IMO, that's the key to a good-sounding system.

I would try to get the L&R more forward if you can.  Where they are now strikes me that they will tend to echo a bit in the cubby.  I seriously doubt any receiver eq can fix that.  Regarding the sub, unfortunately people tend to get too much into the "They are non-directional" thinking and forget about calibration throughout the seating area.  Where you have it indicated now, anyone sitting at the right side will get about 8x as powerful bass as anyone sitting on the left side. I find that incredibly annoying.  I would TRY the sub behind or below one of the L&R speakers.  I emphasize "try" because you may end up with echoing bass.
