HELP! First Blue-Ray Player to go with my Hitachi HDTV, but the picture doesn't blow me away.

Hitachi 60v500a TV and just bought Panasonic EMP=BD605 Blue-Ray Player. The picture is ok, but sure doesn't look as good as in the store. The TV only has a DVI input, so I use HDMI to DVI connector. I have been using a Samsung Upconverter DVD and this picture is marginally better than that one was. I expected to be blown away, but am not.

When I go in to setup and choose HDMI settings, I can only choose 1080i not 1080p. Is that a significant difference?

Appreciate any help.

Try 720p out also.  Which films are you trying, and how far away are you sitting?

Your Blu-ray benefit is a bit limited since your set is native 1366x768, but still you should be seeing HD improvement, HDTV should look better than DVD.  BDs vary in transfer quality though.

hi
This is a 5-6? year old display.
A thorough cleaning would definitely be of benefit, as would a professional calibration.
There may also be "green blob" issues (organic panel degradation) which may also be causing hazing of the image.
The player should most likely be set to output 1080i.
good luck and let us know if any of the above helps!
