From the Earth to the Moon: Recommendations? (Walmart's: $13)

Hey, everyone. I was just at the local Walmart's and caught my eye on "From the Earth to the Moon" DVD set and noticed that Walmart's is selling this set for $13. Is it a decent series?

It's a very good look at the early manned space program.  Each episode tackles a different phase from a different angle.  You get wives perspectives, media coverage angles, historical contexts, etc., all in two-hour (1:30 or so) chunks.  Tom Hanks produced and stars in one of the episodes and narrates all of them.

There are two sets that were issued.  One is a 4:3 as it appeared on HBO.  The other (later one) is a 16:9 anamorphic presentation, which was also considered correct during the filming.

It's a very good mini-series. Very well done. If you liked Apollo 13, I expect you'd enjoy this.

Small correction on what Harry wrote. Hanks was the executive producer for the whole project.

Two of my favorite episodes are the ones on Apollo 9 and Apollo 15.

Sorry, poor wording on my part.  I said "Tom Hanks produced..." and what I meant was that he did so for the entire series.  The rest of the sentence was meant to convey that in addition to his production duties, he "acts" in one episode, and serves as host for all of the rest.

It is an outstanding series if you are interested in the Space Age. Worth much more than the price you mention.

$11.32 on the wally-world website. I may pick a few of these up for the upcoming gift-giving season for people I know who have an interest in the space program. What a deal!

Reading this thread, I was immediately reminded of the 1958 film of the same name. That was one of my childhood favorites. I loved Joseph Cotton (Victor Barbicane) and George Sanders in that one. This series doesn't happen to have anything to do with the film, does it?  (Now I'm off to search for a DVD of that film!)

13 bucks?

Definitely worth it. I think I paid 4 times the price for mine a few years back, and it was worth it then.

Even if you wind up not liking it, it could make a cheap gift for someone who will enjoy it.

So, go ahead and buy.

I'm thinking about it. I might download an episode just to check it out before I buy it. I forgot to mention that this is the signature edition of the set.

Mark, just buy it. It was worth it when the original release was priced at $100.

Did you like Apollo 13?

^Ditto.  It's a great series that accurately depicts the race to the moon.  I paid ~$18 for my copy and didn't hesitate to pick it up when I saw it.

Don't like the WM price or don't want to give money to WM?

Amazon - $12.99 (w/free shipping over $25 or w/Prime and probably no sales tax)
DD - $14.87 (not quite as good, but free shipping and no tax)

I just picked this set up at Walmart today. $13.00 is a great price for these.

It's been a while since I've seen it and I'm looking forward to giving it a spin. I really enjoyed it when it was originally on TV.

I enjoyed this a lot when it aired on HBO.

I picked up the dvd a couple years ago, and sad to say I couldn't even get through it again.
I guess seeing it once was good enough.
