Limited to only 3,000 copies and priced at a whopping $500, the collection includes all the out-of-print titles in the Walt Disney Treasures series. To order, you have to join Disney23, a kind of private club which publishes a magazine, an ezine, and offers deals on limited edition merchandise which isn't sold elsewhere. Membership to D23 is $74. After joining, one can order the limited edition Walt Disney Treasures Collection.

I doubt they sell any of these except maybe to OOP vendors.  Really, anyone likely to buy these boxes already probably has most of them already.

This kind of signals the end of of Disney Treasures, don't you think.  I have been a supporter of the treasures from day one, and enjoyed each one, especially the Rarities.  However, I have never been a fan of Zorro so, I have no plans to purchase the new ones this year.

Putting the whole batch up for sale as a collections sounds like "let's get these things off our shelves."

Well, a number of these titles have been out of print for years now, so I'm not sure what exactly they're trying to get off the shelves.  I took it to be an opportunity for folks to get caught up.  The Treasures line started fairly early in the DVD format and plenty of folks missed out on some animated releases.  Since it doesn't include all the existing Treasures, I wouldn't view it as an indication that the line is dead.  If anything, it's another opportunity to get folks sucked into the line.
I doubt too many people will get sucked into the line for $500 these days.

The product page says it includes 27 existing Treasures but, according to Ultimate Disney, there are 28 total. So this set includes all but one or they're mistaken and there's really 28. Either way, it's unfortunate there are no other options for those who are only missing a few. I'm sure most folks will only bite if the organization and pricing is similar to the originals.

The alternative is getting these many of these off e-bay at around $40-$60 each so if you figure a low average of $30 each for these off e-bay for all 27 it comes to $810.00 and many of the long out of print ones will likely bring that total higher so I don't think $500.00 is alot for the collector who really wants these and doesn't want to be gouged by e-bay sellers. With the low 3,000 run and special packagin I these I see them quickly selling out and ending up on e-bay for much higher so I wouldn't delay if you want them.

They could release them just as they did originally, perhaps without the tins. That's been rumored almost since the beginning.

OOP for Disney does not mean Out Of Print.  It just means that the window for sales is over.  If there are discs sitting around that were not shipped out then they stay in the warehouse, or discs that were returned when the vault closed on the title.  Disney is very strict about the window time for sales of their classics and when the time is up, it is up.

The existing set that's not included is the Elfego Baca and The Swamp Fox set.  I don't have any idea why that is the case.

That's all well and good except that the Treasures were never subjected to some random availability window.  They were limited by print runs.  In which case, OOP really does mean OOP.  The ludicrous two-week window in which Dr. Syn sold out being the latest example.  The same principle applied to the 4 volumes of the Legacy Collection, which is why some of the volumes are still available but others have disappeared.  They were all released the same day.

In 2003 there was an Ultimate Disney Treasure Chest box which consisted of tin-less versions of Waves 1 and 2. I started collecting at Wave 3, so that helped me out. But some releases I've been able to find on shelves on release day, while I others I had to hunt down online.

Glancing at my shelf I have 20 of the 28 sets. The ones I don't have were by choice, as I am less interested in the non-animation content, although the completist in me wishes I had bought them.

I've all the sets, have there really been 28 of them? wow.

Well, consitering they were not the complete series for each, I wonder if they are going back and doing complete sets for both.

I found myself in the same boat.  We did find a lot of the non-animated product to be quite fun, for the time period.  They're all rather short "episodes"...and it certainly helped me that the BF really likes the Hardy Boys.  We got through both discs, plus bonuses, in one night.

But in terms of this set?  Pass.  I've slowly been digging up older sets on Amazon marketplace for cheap ($20 for the Disneyland Historical Broadcasts) and will continue to do so.  I certainly hope Zorro isn't the end of the series, though.

If I were interested in the whole thing, this set would be sweet. However I only wanted the live action stuff (never a big disney animation fan), so I'm happy with what I got. I do hope we get the rest of Elfego Baca some day - that shit was DOPE! Swamp Fox wasn't too bad, either.

I enjoy your posts Tony J Case but I wish members wouldn't use four-letter-invectives on this forum.
It offends me.
I'm tempted to cuss myself sometimes -- especially at the lunatic who's been cyber-stalking me here -- but I always catch myself in time.

I'd buy this set if I could afford it.
I can't so I won't.
As I much as I value Disney's classic output, I do not understand their reasoning or methods much of the time.
They turn a deaf ear to perfectly reasonable requests for some of this material and then offer it in a package nobody can afford expect a handful of the people who don't need it.

Well, I bought mine in easily digestible 25 dollar chunks per set as they came out.  Of course, at 28 sets that means I've spent 700 bucks so this would have been the better way to go.  Everything is relative as far as affordability goes.

I missed out on these and would like to order this set if its still available when my finances allow.

I was a bit late to DVD (2003/2004 or so), and by that time was significantly behind on what would've been a expensive series to go back and catch up with (Not to mention countless other DVD's I wanted), so this is a good opportunity for people such as myself to catch up all at once. So I think it's a good idea and will attract new people to this series that will continue to buy future releases now they've caught up with what they viewed as too daunting of a series to start collecting since there were so many expensive and limited releases, with several being hard to find now.

I can understand those that were there on day 1 at the birth of this series viewing it as somewhat unnecessary, but I think it's a great idea for those that are late to the game.

Like Leo, I started DVD in 2004 – and have had a great run, but missed a number of the early Disney Treasures sets. AND, worse, I didn’t come to realize their great quality until much later in the game. And, because of that, I sometimes “paid the price”.

For instance, I ordered the long OOP first Silly Symphonies volume from Amazon marketplace just a few weeks ago, when a “like new” set was finally offered at a “reasonable” secondary market price! …And, in the past, paid a premium for the Goofy volume and one for the Mickey volumes as well. The rest, I managed to get at or below list from Amazon or various B&M retailers.

So, while this deal is not that great for me, it can be great news for a lot of people!

But, there’s even a small “plus side” for me, since I actually appear in one of the extra features of The Chronological Donald Volume Four.  As a freelance scripter for the UNCLE SCROOGE comic book (note my “Icon”), I participated in a feature on the history of Donald Duck in comic books and, with a press run of 39,500 copies, I wondered how many people outside my family and friends would ever see the thing!  It’s pretty informative, if I do say so myself.

…So, now it gets a “new life”, of sorts!

I have 27 of the 28 releases -- only missing Elfego Baca and The Swamp Fox  intentionally because of the decision to only release a portion of the episodes.    26 Silver Tins, 1 Gold (who makes these decisions?)

I'm not sure I'll buy Zorro, but I've stopped collecting them several times before and ended up buying anyway.

If someone was starting (or needing a significant number), I think the cheapest way to get them new is to join The Disney Movie Club and the majority of them are still available and at a pretty significant discount (last time I looked before Wave 8 came out, I thought there were only 4 or 5 that weren't available).     Use the hefty Club discounts and buy the OOP at somewhat inflated collectors prices and still be way ahead of the New All in One box.

Some of the Disney's have been released in Europe/Region 2. first Silly Symphonies, I bought here in Germany. It has the original video (audio is modified) of the 3 little Pigs. Another treasure that people have asked for is the Mickey Mouse Color-1. I saw that today in a store for 8 Euros (circa $12). Already out in England and in about a week, the complete GOOFY. IF you can handle PAL/R2  you can get some of the tereasures. I gather the "Fuhrer's Face" in NOT in the german (?and England) disks.
