My Time Machine external drive crashed and may be dead. After running Disk Utility Verify and Repair functions, it no longer even mounts. I'd hope to extract the Time Machine archive from it, but without a more powerful utility, I'm out of luck.

And I've got my SuperDuper! backup disconnected until I'm sure Snow Leopard is a keeper, so I'm currently computing without a net

This is my second external USB drive to fail in 12 months. I'm not certain what's going on. I keep them in a desk cubby, which has some ventilation holes. Could they be overheating and failing? How hot can a hard drive get before dying?

Any utility worth running to try and recover the data before I try a warranty return?
