Help with theater sound system

Thread Starter

I am in the process of building a theater into my new home, it is 18'2" long and 14'5" wide. The ceiling is 8' high. I am looking at the SVS  7.1 compact surround system with SBS-01 mains and PB10-NSD sub. Will this system work? What type of receiver should I get to run the system? The builder put ceiling mounts in, I am thinking that it would be best to mount the speakers on the wall. What are thoughts on this if any? Any help would be great, I am still learning... My budget for receiver is under a grand if possible. or about 2800 total if there is a better speaker setup.

Unless they are made for wall mounting, speakers sound better when they are away from the walls.

Is the sub large enough for you?  Your room is similar in size to mine and I'm running dual 15's and upgrading to quad 18's.  It all depends on how loud and how low you want your bass.  My mains are similar in size to the SVS speakers and I drive them with a Pioneer receiver to levels that are uncomfortable.

I agree - give the speakers room to breath.  Ceiling and wall mounted speakers comprise sound for looks.

The package you choose should be fine in your room if you get the bigger sub option.  If that blows the budget, I suggest 5.1 with the bigger sub over 7.1.

Most any mid range receiver will be fine in your room (anything $400 and up).  Check out Onkyo and Denon as well.  Don't overspend - save the budget for the speakers....
