Tour of duty dvds, sony pictures

I own the entire series on dvd and am a bit shocked by the picture quality which IMHO is pretty bad. Most of the episodes are fuzzy in spots and all of the original music has been replaced.

Nothing more than a guess but given its age, the show might have been finished on tape so that may explain why it doesn't look so good.

 Travis is correct.

The show was shot on film, but like almost all filmed shows since the mid-1980s (1985-1986 was the transition period), the post-production was done on tape. To do a better transfer would require:

—Going back to the negatives and re-transferring them
—If the negatives were not cut to conform to the video edits, the edits will have to be recreated in the new transfer.

Then there's the whole matter of the audio, and not just because of the music. It, too, might have to be re-edited to conform to the picture. And electronically-generated credits would have to be recreated.

This is what Sony did with Seinfeld, a show exponentially more popular than this. They could just as easily have used the existing analog tape transfers there as well. It was done with Twin Peaks because of there being very few episodes and a huge cult following. If Sony couldn't (or more likely, wouldn't) re-clear the music, then a HD rebuild of this show is a long shot.
