A Hard Day's Night Blu-ray - Canada Only?

I received an e-mail about this today. iNet Video and Amazon Canada appear to be the only ones who are taking orders for it. The release date is said to be 9/9.

Does anyone have any additional info on this?

Well Alliance has done a good number of Canada-only releases in the last year. This looks like another.

I read that maybe Weinstein owns the rights in the US and they've pretty much given up on Blu-ray so likely won't come out there until they sell the rights to their titles someday. Although it doesn;t mention Weinstein on the imdb page. It says the last DVD release in the US was from Buena Vista (Disney). Not sure then.

It's also in this week's Best Buy flyer and the DVD is offered as a bonus with the purchase of the Deluxe Beatles Rock Band set. The real question is what master Alliance is using, given the framing issues on the DVD release. As well, if a DVD purposed transfer is used, we could be looking @ a DVNR/EE smear job. Hopefully DVD Beaver will post some caps soon.

DVD Beaver has their review up:

Seems to be the same transfer as the previous DVD, and a 1080i one at that....very soft to my eyes.  Doesn't seem any better to me than the DVD upscaled by my PS3.  The review claims that the audio has benefited from DTS-HD MA, but I find that hard to believe considering the generally poor reaction to the audio mix on the DVD when it was originally released.  I'm gonna wait for a proper release utilizing a new transfer and audio from the new remasters.

It doesn't seem any better than the DVD, even though you haven't seen anything but screencaps, which can be very unreliable, especially at the Beaver.  I'll be interested to read other thoughts.

I saw this BD tonight and it is a SD master upconverted to 1080i. Compared to the DVD there is absolutely no additional info in the picture and the DVD in fact looks better upconverted. The sound is the same horrible 5.1 remix as on the DVD. It looks like Alliance Atlantis is simply cashing in on the release of the remastered cd's. Save your money and keep the DVD.

Two good BluRays to compare to this would be Criterion's Repulsion and Sony's Dr. Strangelove. Both films were shot by Gilbert Taylor around the same time, B&W, and... their BluRays are stunning. This BluRay of A Hard Day's Night looks anemic and lacks the great look of the other two films.

Which is a shame, since Miramax's video transfer is fantastic on DVD - one of the few titles they didn't wreck with noise reduction and oversharpening.

I just compared the DVD to the Blu-Ray - I'm really at a loss to explain how you can say that the DVD looks better upconverted - the DVD looks like crap upconverted.  The Blu-Ray, while not the greatest thing, is much superior and MUCH sharper.  It makes me wonder whether you really saw the Blu-Ray, because if you had there is simply no way you could make this post.  My DVD is in the trade pile where it belongs.  Shame that there's no mono mix.  But the image is not the disaster that people are making out, most of whom, BTW, haven't actually seen the thing.  I've seen much less stellar Blu-Rays than this.

You really think I make a comment about a BD without seeing it, mr hhw? The only difference between the DVD and the BD is that the black level on the BD is slightly raised but compared to the DVD there is absolutely not more detail in the picture. The thing that really kills the BD is that it is riddled with compression artifacts something that is surprisingly less obvious on the DVD when upscaled.

And I completely disagree - the Blu-Ray is much sharper.  Again, I'm not saying it's a stellar Blu-Ray, clearly it isn't.  But to say the upscaled DVD is better - uh, no.

I see hints of increased sharpness, but it just looks like it originated from a lower resolution. There's no fine detail anywhere, but it's not waxy as if DVNR-ized. It doesn't look right, even if it's judging from screen captures. I sense the same issues with the El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire BluRays.
