"Jimeny Crickets!  Haven't you Boston fans had enough? You've had the Celtics through the ages with multiple titles, one recently, the Sox have won two World Series recently, the Patriots have won 3 Superbowls."

Johnny,

Please, I need you to feel my pain.  The Bruins haven't won in ages (and are playing only mediocre thus far this year), the Red Sox aren't all that good; the Celtics last won it in 2007 and do not have Kobe Bryant; and the Patriots just played the worst game in the history of their franchise, and have a bum for a quarterback who can't throw.  Please, I need some sympathy here.  At least the Chargers are 8-3, and are pretty much guaranteed a Super Bowl berth at this point.

;)

Seriously,

If the Chargers were to win it all, I'm guessing -- like most Red Sox fans I know -- that you'd want them to win it again.  I know I would. :)

Oh c'mon, Johnny, you know there's no such thing as enough wins for the team one is a fan of.    If the Chargers ever do win a Super Bowl,  you will NOT be saying to yourself "I don't care if they never make the playoffs again", and if they do make the playoffs, you will NOT be saying to yourself "I don't care if they win this upcoming playoff game".  You will care.  Trust me.

^^^

Precisely.  We know it's true.  Chargers fans are all the same.  Once the San Diego Chargers win it all, we'll never be able to hear of anything else for years to come.  Three minutes after they've defeated the Saints in the Super Bowl, Johnny will be yelling "Repeat!" so loudly that I'll be able to hear it from Ford Field.  And after their second straight Super Bowl victory, echoes of "Three-peat!" will resound from coast-to-coast. ;)

Ok, I've gotten over my uncontrollable fit of laughter, though I still have a bruise from hitting the hardwood floor.  But I think that's the only pain I can give you.  You're right that Brady is a bum.  BTW,during the 50's and 60's SD had no NBA team so I rooted for the one closest to me, the Lakers.  Damn Celtics.

For those of you who doubt my once is enough statement, let me remind you that once would a 100% improvement over what San Diego fans have now in any major sport.  I am not saying I wouldn't root for another, but I know the gods of sport would not permit it.  Steve Young got the monkey off his back by beating, of course, the Chargers.  He only had one SB victory but I bet it's made all the difference to him.  I'd like to get the monkey of the collective backs of SD fans.

"after their second straight Super Bowl victory"  OMG, what have you been smoking, Scott?  And speaking of SD fans, it has been years since I've been to a game in Jack Murphy Stadium (that's right, I don't acknowledge the new name, just as I don't acknowledge the existence of Alien 3), but SD fans seem to be from everywhere but SD.  When the Steelers were in town and won, at least half the stadium went home happy.  There are always a lot of vocal fans from the visiting team at a Charger game, at least when I was attending.

BTW the Cleveland Browns have at least one NFL (pre SB) title.
The Charger's upcoming game in Cleveland is just the kind of game that worries me.  They have a history of playing down to the opponents level.  However it's November, so I'll go out on a limb and predict a Charger win.

When the championship occurred before most of the team's fans were even born, it tends to no longer matter. Same with the Lions, whose motto is "Rebuilding Since 1957".

If I have to listen to Matt Millen on the tube much more, I'm going to puke. The guy is everywhere. Last night I almost threw my remote control through the TV after, on consecutive series, he gushed over David Harris and Paul Posluzny, going on about what wonderful young linebackers they are. Gee, Matt, then why did you pass on both of them in the draft, instead taking Drew Stanton, you freakin' moron?! The Bills even drafted Posluzny with the Lions pick!

How this guy keeps getting jobs is beyond me. He must have compromising photos of someone important doing unspeakable things with farm animals.

I'm glad you corrected yourself.    It seems to me that if the "gods of sport" permitted it once, that would be prima facie evidence that there's nothing preventing another.

Johnny,

Okay, that will suffice.  Thanks. ;)

BTW, I don't smoke anything, just for the record.

Does anyone think the Titans will defeat the Colts this weekend?
I wonder if Michael Vick will get any playing time when the Eagles are at the Georgia Dome.

I told my son that the Saints would score a touchdown to tie it against the Redskins, and that they would then win it in overtime. (I'm speaking as a long-time Patriots fan, who usually got the worst possible outcome in any game in which they played.)  And speaking of New England, they've really become a very mediocre team this year.  I don't know at this point if they will even win their division.  In my view, they don't deserve to make the playoffs with the team they have been fielding to this point.

I hope they cut to the Saints-Redskins game, since they are now in overtime.  How I'd love for the Redskins to shock them.  Maybe it could happen.  I just checked, and the game isn't being shown in my area.

Agree. And ditto for the Steelers. Neither team seems to give a crap at this point. I guess that means I can spend my Sundays doing other things from here on out.

The Steelers are losing to fluff teams like the Redskins, Raiders and Chiefs, while the New England pass defense is a colossal joke.  Not to mention Brady suddenly becoming King of the interception and the total ineptitude of the offensive play callers.
Yes, he threw for 50 touchdown in 2007, and now can't seem to find the end zone. I realize that Samuel, Bruschi, and Vrabel, among a few other key players, were part of the group that was very much used to winning, but they've gone from great to mediocre in quite a short time. If they make the playoffs, it should be an interesting second season.

As for the Steelers, Tomlin was furious last week. Can you imagine his reaction in that locker room after the game? The Raiders were sunk, and then the interception is blown. With the Pats, Brady gets intercepted with about 10 minutes left. It was first and goal at the four-yard line, and they couldn't score. Ouch.

I think it’s rather humorous that the Raiders outplayed the Steelers and won this game. Especailly since they played 2 back up offensive lineman for most of the game.
As for the Steelers, I’m really getting sick and tired of the Refs not calling penalties against them because of their “rep” as a clean team. There were three obvious penalties that the Refs just happened to miss or simply let go because this is the Steelers and they are a clean team.

You can stick a fork in the Steelers, they are done for this year. Losing at home to a team without a real QB was the final nail in the coffin.

They did not show the Saints game here, but I was surprised that New Orleans pulled that game out. Looking at the score and time remaining, I didn't think they would be able to come back. With Minnesota's loss last night, the Saints now have a stranglehold on the #1 seed in the NFC.

Atlanta got their asses handed to them by Philadelphia. .

"Looking at the score and time remaining, I didn't think they would be able to come back."

Well, now the Saints have come close twice (I think) to losing this season.  In 2007, the Patriots came close at least twice (Philadelphia, and of course, the infamous Ravens game).  Somehow, these great teams do find a way to win.  But goodness -- the Redskins had the winning field goal in their hands, and blew it.  Wasn't it a chip shot?  I can't recall the distance at the moment.
It was a chip shot on the right hash mark, and the kicker just pushed it a smidge too much to the right and missed the FG.
Patrick,

Thanks.  I can't decide if his miss was more surprising than the Steelers' near interception of the Raiders pass that would have iced a Pittsburgh win.

Romo throws for almost 400 yards and they lose?  The cowboys are pretenders too.
Well, Michael Vick did play and got booed (no surprise there). But I was surprised to see some fans hold "We Love Vick" signs, and some people cheering when he scored a touchdown.

Had 4th row seats right over top of the tunnel, had the teams tossing gloves up to the kids at the end.  My nephew got a few plus got to see The Jonas Brothers on the sidelines...

This game was really over before it started.  The Giants had just played into OT against the Falcons, and teams typically don't fare well the week after playing in OT.  But to have only 4 days rest and fly across country and play in a mile high altitude?  There was basically zero chance for the Giants to win.  But not the worst loss, as it was out of conference.  And due to tie breakers, it looks like the Giants have moved ahead of the Cowboys for a playoff spot by virtue of Dallas' tough 4 game sched (including SD, NO, and PHI) and the lack of production in December.  Which means that three Giants wins will almost assure them of a wildcard spot (and possibly the division title) and even two wins may do the trick.

I'm surprised no one is talking about how royally the Redskins screwed the pooch against NO.  First off, they would have been ahead two TD's after picking off Brees at the end of the first half if Meacham hadn't stolen the ball from the Wash defender (like some sort of sandlot play) and taken it in for a TD.  Then Suisham misses what was essentially an extra point that would have put the Skins up by two scores with under 2 minutes to go.  Still, they just have to hold the Saints from driving 90 yards for a tying TD.  But they let Meacham get behind the secondary for a TD in nothing flat, which is absolutely inexcusable in that situation.  Then they fumble the ball in OT, a fumble that wasn't called on the field but awarded to the Saints on replay (and an iffy looking replay at that).  It's like they were trying to lose.  So many opportunities to win just blown in bizarre ways.

How have the Steelers gone from SB champs to losing to 3 of the worst teams (Browns, Raiders, Chiefs) in the NFL?  They are now is desperate need of help to just make the playoffs.  I didn't watch the game last night and was shocked to read the morning paper.  I am not a Steeler fan, mind you, but I'm still shocked.

I do understand that SB champs don't always repeat, but they usually don't lose to so many bad teams the following year.
Johnny,

That's a good question.  They, like New England, have looked quite mediocre this year.  I wonder how often Super Bowl teams fail to make the playoffs the following year?

"Oh, yes there's trouble!  Right here in River City."

Both the Steelers and the Patriots have lately fallen on hard times.  Big Ben is struggling along with Tommy boy.  Belichick seems to be losing his grip on the Pats defense and, on Wednesday, sent home four players who were late for a team meeting.  The defense must be thinking Belichick doesn't trust them and the offense is woeful in the second half of games.  Adalius Thomas is already carping and I'm just waiting for Moss to have a meltdown although he (Moss) is remaining close-mouthed.  Let's see. . .no pass rush and no killer instinct in the fourth quarter.  Oy!

Being a Pats fan, I hope they have a statement game against the Panthers on Sunday.  Either that or get pounded and put me out of my misery.  Anyone like the Bengals?

3 words:

No Troy Polamalu

In addition to missing Polamalu, the Steelers are also missing two starting defensive linemen. Add to that an offensive line that has not performed well either run or pass blocking, and you have your answer why Pittsburgh will not make the playoffs. Also, I am not impressed at all with Mendenhall as a starting running back. He was not worth the first round draft pick the Steelers used on him, IMO.

I find myself wondering if the Chargers can keep their late season win streak going on Sunday against Dallas.  They'll be one the road and Dallas is going to want a win bad.
The Patriots' defense comes through and they hold on for the win. The Dolphins and Jets both win as well. All New England has to do is win out, and they can send the Dolphins and Jets packing for this year.  Of course, facing Buffalo, Jacksonville, and Houston -- with the first and third games on the road -- will not be an easy task.

Denver lost today as expected to the Colts, and the Bengals got trounced by the Vikings. Now that the Patriots have all but clinched the AFC East, I'm thinking about homefield for a round or two, which means I probably have to root for the Cowboys tonight against the Chargers. I don't like rooting for the Cowboys all that often, but a San Diego loss could really make things interesting as far as which division winners have to play a first-round game against whomever wins the Wild Cards. And guess who San Diego plays next week? Yep, the Bengals -- which means that at least one of those two teams should have a fifth loss after next week.  If the division winners end up with identical records, I think the best I could hope for would be one home game, as the Bengals and Chargers each have better division and conference records than the Patriots at this point.
