I watched the Vikes last night and they looked damn good.  If Favre can stay healthy then they are definate contenders.

The offensive coordinator will be fired for not being conservative enough, and all of the pages in the playbook will be replaced with a single play: rush to the right.

Hmm... do you think they'll try to trade for Donovan McNabb?

And Clive Rush will come back to coach the Boston Patriots. ;)

Steve,

The Vikings looked good, but only won by a TD. Was the game that close? I didn't catch the fourth quarter.

I think Rodgers played darn near equal to Favre last night:

Rodgers 26-37, 384 yds, 2 tds, int

Favre 24-31, 271 yds, 3 tds
The game wasn't as close as the score indicated.  GB did fight back, but it was apparent in the 3rd quarter after they failed to convert a 4th & Goal that the Pack was toast.

I agree with the pundits that Rodgers did a remarkable job with the porous OL he has to work with.  That said, he still held on to the ball for too long (that safety he took in the 4th Q was a reckless play).  Had the two QB's switched sides, and Rodgers were under that sturdy Vikings OL, he would have thrown for 400 yds and 4 TD's.  And Favre would be dead.

That's an excellent point. Maybe the Packers will strengthen that line by ... regular season's end?   I am liking Rodgers more and more, though.  His post-game remarks were very classy.

Yes, I think the Packers have a good replacement for Favre in Rodgers. The guy has real talent -- the team just has too many flaws in other areas. I can see why the Pack wanted to move on without Favre. They would have lost Rodgers to free agency if they had not given him a chance to start, and Favre would not commit to coming back ("I'm retired... I want to come back... no, I want to stay retired... no, I changed my mind").
Obviously the vikings would rather have a young, star quarterback (I think they looked into Cassell and Cutler).  But right now they needed someone to lead this team, and found it with Favre.  He's not the "best" option, but he's a lot better than Sage Rossenfels and Tavaris Jackson.  The team is complete, they just needed someone that can hand off to AP and throw the ball sometimes, more efficiently than Tavaris can do.  With a complete team the Vikings can definately contend in the NFC.
Well... until Favre's arm falls off.  I predict week 10, when the picks start coming in bunches.

It's very easy in week 4 to lose sight of the marathon that the season really is.

This is the funniest thing I've seen all day:

Redesigned NFL Logos

The new Bills logo and the Tennessee Titan(ics) had me laughing the hardest.

I love that Rams logo.

As all the pundits are falling over themselves to eat crow about the Broncos 4-0 start and talk up McDaniels as a Coach of the Year candidate, Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports has a different take:

Quote:
It's comical watching everyone fall over themselves praising Josh McDaniels for Denver's 4-0 start when the Broncos' undefeated start is the No. 1 reason McDaniels should be ripped.

Put Jay Cutler under center and the Broncos are a serious Super Bowl threat rather than a nice, first-quarter-of-the-season story.

Kyle Orton ain't winning no Super Bowl. Not in this life. Not on this planet. McDaniels' mishandling of Cutler might've destroyed a Super Bowl team. That's the story. That mistake isn't water under the bridge. We don't forget about it because it happened in February. You can lose the Super Bowl in the offseason just as easily as you can by improperly using timeouts or calling the wrong plays.

It hadn't occurred to me, but he's right -- Denver is still the worst 4-0 team in the league, and as much as people are giving them grudging respect, no one expects them to win their division much less make any noise in the playoffs.  The worst part of the team last year was the defense -- the offense under Cutler got their points.  Had McDaniels combined this year's defense with last year's offense, Denver would be a lock to win the AFC West.  As it is now, they are a few weeks away from being yesterday's feel good story.

I don't buy Whitlock's "heads I win, tails you lose" spin at all (actually ripping a coach for winning, which of course wouldn't keep him from ripping McDaniels for losing).  Was he touting Denver as a Super Bowl contender prior to the Cutler trade?  I doubt it.  I doubt anyone expected a 1 year turnaround from the hopeless, hapless no-defense Shanahan era.  The Cutler business is OVER with (it's questionable whether he was ever going to be happy after Shanahan left).  Not for a minute will I believe Whitlock's "no matter how well they do, they could have been title contenders" nonsense.

Whitlock's thinking hinges on two premises -- that a) the Broncos won't make it to the playoffs because the Kyle Orton offense will lose a few games for them and b) that Cutler would have won those games.  I agree with Whitlock on both points.  We'll see.
Don't forget that one of those 4 wins was an absolute gift.  The game was lost and the Broncos got a very lucky deflection on a pass for a TD.  Of course, I'm completely unbiased
post #136 of 546
What I don't get are the people who think McDaniels committed some mortal sin when Cutler left.  I read a post from at least one Denver "fan" saying he'll never forgive McDaniels for that.  Really?  Even if he winds up winning at least one Super Bowl?

I'd be pissed to if Philip Rivers left SD because he couldn't get along with a new coach.  I think this is a pretty natural reaction.  Cutler was going to be the franchise QB for the next 10 years or more.  Of course 5-0 can go a ways to salve the wound

Of course for my Bolts, after just 4 games, the season may be slipping away.  A team that looked like a slam-dunk for the division win, now looks like they'll be battling it out with KC for 2nd place.

You hit exactly on the point:  It isn't about pining away for a particular player.  It's about winning, and as long as a team is doing that, why should a fan care who the quarterback is?

The Broncos continue to surprise, this time beating the Pats to go 5-0. I watched most of the game, and still am not convinced this is a playoff team. New England's offense looked out of synch, and their defense is not very good. However, the Broncos still struggled to move the ball.  However, if the Chargers do not turn things around, Denver could win the division by default -- KC and Oakland certainly pose no threat.

Jim Zorn moves one week closer to the unemployment line, following up an unimpressive win over the horrible Rams and a loss to Detroit with a loss to previously winless Carolina. Too bad firing Zorn will not fix what is really wrong in D.C. The owner would need to fire himself to fix the real problem (same as in Oakland and Detroit).

Jack Del Rio may be joining Zorn. The Jags get blown out by Seattle and are playing their home games in front of a lot of empty seats.

Did the Bengals make a pack with the devil? Cincy is now 4-1 and leading the division over Baltimore and Pittsburgh, and is a freak pass play away from being undefeated!

Scott,

I'm on the same page with you regarding Denver, despite their win over New England.

Cincinnati did surprise me this weekend, but they sure do look to be for real.  Now that the Ravens have lost two straight, they might be more than movitated next week against the Vikings.  They could lose their third straight game (it's in Minnesota), although I hope not.  And how much fun will the New York Giants - New Orleans game be?  I'm really looking forward to that one.

Johnny,

I suppose it goes without saying that the Chargers need to defeat Denver in San Diego next week.  It should be a very interesting MNF game.  I'll be pulling for the Chargers.  If some version of the throwback uniforms are worn, any chance of getting John Hadl and Lance Alworth to come out of retirement for the game? ;)

Speaking of throw back jerseys, those worn by Denver yesterday had to be the ugliest ones so far! Too bad the Broncos didn't go with a vintage orange crush uniform.

I really didn't like those uniforms either.  I would rather have seen these:

Yes, those were the same uniforms I had in mind, Scott.

I bet it will be interesting in San Fran's film room sessions this week.  Mike Singletary should be lambasting Dre Bly for his hotdog stunt that resulted in him fumbling while the team was getting blown out against Atlanta. Bly's response to questions about the play: "Dre's going to be Dre'," Bly said. "When I make plays, and I've made a lot, I express myself." What a tool!

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the AFL, all the original AFL teams are wearing the uniforms from their inaugural season.  Which is why the Broncos throwback uniform is so godawful ugly and the Chiefs are wearing their Dallas Texans outfits, complete with a silhouette of the state of Texas on their helmets (which was ironic since they were playing the Dallas Cowboys this week).  The worst part of the throwbacks were the vertically striped socks.  Very clown-like.  Some of the players twisted their socks to create a swirl pattern.  But any discussion of "ugliest throwbacks" begins and ends with the Eagles throwbacks from a couple of years ago.  You can't get uglier than that.

Yes you can: the Cincinnati Bengals' current uniforms.

Keep on tooling, dre, keep on tooling!

I was getting a lot of laughs from the camera shots of Singletary when things were going from bad to worse during the Falcons/49ers game yesterday.  Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the 49ers locker room during halftime.

I hope we're done with the throwback uniforms.  That has to be one of the sillier ideas the NFL PR people have come up with (especially when teams like Tennessee have to dress like a team from a prior city).

Rex Ryan looked a little shell-shocked at the post-game news conference last night. (Congrats, Miami...awesome game!!)

Former Michigan Wolverine Chad Henne looked pretty good last night for the Dolphins. Unfortunately, he will be the last Michigan QB to find a spot on an NFL roster for quite a few years.

Oh boy, two of my favorite.  Unfortunately they don't play defense where it seems to me the Chargers good use the most help.

I agree with the comments about the Broncos not being for real.  If they beat the Chargers at home on Monday night, I might have to start changing my mind.

After numerous disastrous long snaps this season, Brad St. Louis has been cut by the Bengals. Thank goodness. I hope the new long snapper (Clark Harris) can get into the proper rhythm by this coming Sunday.
