Forum Functionality Enhancement Thread

Please put all forum functionality related enhancements in this thread.

Sorry if this has been answered, but I haven't figured out a way to search specific threads since the switch.  So it makes it a lot harder to find out if my question has been answered.

When I post, the post box has the scroll bar on the right if the post is long enough.  The problem I'm running into is that if I use my mouse to "grab" the scroll bar it doesn't do anything.  I can't move the scroll bar with my mouse to navigate up and down through the post.  The only way I can is just by keying "up" and "down" on the keyboard or, strangely enough, with the scroll wheel on my mouse.  But for the life of me, I can't get the scroll bar to move by clicking or dragging with my mouse.

Bryan-
Thanks for the feedback.  Thread searching is not currently available, BUT it is in the development queue, so hopefully it will be making an appearance in an upcoming release.  The scroll bar is a known bug and is being worked on.

And the scroll bar bug is fixed as of this AM.

Could some way of confirming the marking of all posts read be re-added? I liked the old button changing to "all posts read" but now with the new text nav there's no way to tell. Well, not totally, I've been going to the main forum page and make sure that the check disappear. Maybe a check mark or something?

When doing an "Advanced Search," after you've made all your choices and entered your keywords, you have to scroll down to the bottom where there are two buttons on the right-hand-side of the column:  "Search" (on the left) and "Reset" (on the right).

It is confounding that the right-hand button would not be "Search"...since in almost every instance the button that brings the expected desired action is the lower right-hand button.  I cannot tell you how many times I have cleared out all my search data as I have instinctively pushed the "Reset" button thinking it was "Search."  I know it's careless on my part...but I figured I would mention it here since it seems like it's backwards from almost every other similar function in this platform.  I would think consistency would be desired.

FYI: Keyboard shortcuts work for text formatting. (since that's often easier than either clicking icons or VB codes.)
Excellent.  Thanks, Dave.  I didn't realize that. What's the keyboard shortcut for quote?
Sorry for the confusion, not for quotes. For Bold, Italic, Underline.
We still much need a quote shortcut.

I just realized the same thing is true when sending PMs.  In the lower right-hand corner of the PM box are two buttons:  "Send" on the left and "Clear" on the right.  It should be the other way around.

I just tried to use the multi-quote feature across two threads (which used to work before the software switch-over) and found that it doesn't work any more.

In other words, I tried to copy a quote from one thread by pressing the multi-quote button and then opened another thread and pushed quote only to have nothing show up.

Not crucial.  Just an observation.

A Thread Lock icon is needed.

I went to post in a thread, thought something was broken since there was no "reply" box, and then noticed that the thread had a super-title "This thread is locked". Checked again the thread listing page: no thread lock icon on that one.

This is a useful feature to indicate to stay away since participation is no longer possible (or to read in hopes of a great trainwreck :))

Agreed.  I have raised this before.

Trainwreck...classic!

Revert to the old software.
I think I have given the new software a more than fair chance since the "upgrade" and instead of getting used to it I have grown increasingly more frustrated and less likely to read/post on the HTF.   Maybe I am in the minority but I seriously doubt it.  However from long experience in the software industry, I'd judge the chances of that happening as slim indeed (otherwise we'd still be happily using Word 5.1 on the Mac, just with redone internals for Intel processors and Cocoa APIs.  Instead we have the atrocity that is Office 2008).  That said, my suggestions:

1) Turn off the contextual menu "feature" -- it is completely useless and interferes with spell check and other useful features on the Mac.

2) Send thread subscription emails as plain text + links.  The current formatting makes them unreadable on the iPhone and unpleasant to read on a computer.

3) In thread search.

4) The quote feature has been consistently buggy for me in Safari -- often when attempting to type after a quote it will insist on putting my typing inside the quote.
Formatting in general is buggy -- the only way I found to stop the bold text at the top of this post was to click on a new line and type there.

Ted! Don't be dead, dude!

No, seriously. I frequent MacRumors, which uses vbulletin, and it reminds me that the old system wasn't perfect.

Does Safari have an option to disable context-menu changes? I have that enabled on Firefox and I don't have the nonsense right-click menu.

And in-thread search should be coming. I understood that's on the to-do list.

Safari doesn't have context menu disabling -- at least I haven't been able to find anything.

I'm in no way saying the old software was perfect -- it was just vastly superior to the new software.  I was never a fan of the vBulletin style formatting, and on HTF they didn't have a cheat sheet for the [quote] option -- it took me forever remember how to do it right.  But now that I've seen the broken alternative -- I long for the old way.  And there isn't a single new feature that I use/would miss if it went away.

I'm striving to de-grumble my HTF experience, so I'll keep mute on these design decisions. I only hope you can work past the issues and stick around.

Make it so when you click on all new posts it pulls all new posts not just the first 10 pages of them.

Is there any way to mark INDIVIDUAL FORUMS as "read"? I can't find it. I don't necessarily want to mark ALL the forums at HTF read but that seems to be the only option available. If this is a feature that can be turned on in the new forum software then enabling it would be a big help. Thanks.

There is.  If you go to the main forum listing page (click on forums in the breadcrumbs, or the forums tab on top) http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/ .  To the left of the forum name there is a little icon.  Clicking on it marks that entire forum area read.

Thanks Adam. That's exactly what I was looking for.
