Private Message Functionality Enhancement Requests

Please put all Private Message related enhancements in this thread.

I think in the old sw I couls send a pm from somewhere in a topic or a specific post, if I saw something someone said and wanted to send them a quick note.
Now I have to click on the persons name and go to their home(?) page to send them a pm.

So I guess I'm asking for a way to send a pm right from a post that I'm currently reading.

That's correct. In the old software, clicking on a person's name (or avatar) next to a message would bring up options to "PM this person" and "Quote this post in a PM to this person". Both were useful options worth adding.

It seems odd that when you have a notice that you have a new PM (in an existing PM exchange) and you click on it...you get taken to the first message in the PM exchange and have to scroll all the way to the bottom in order to read the latest message.

In fact, in all the various ways to enter a PM exchange, none of them have the capacity to take you to the laest message...but only the top of the exchange.

Since I tend to engage in some lengthy back-and-forths with people maybe that's more of an issue for me than for others.

Good point Mike I noticed this too recently and thought i hit the wrong button or something.

Yes, you should be taken directly to the message in question and not the top of the list.

Also, we need a new PM indicator. A lot of times unless I got the email notification so I know about I don't even notice
I have a new PM. Having a flashing mail icon worked well before.

And I don't get e-mail notifications...so for someone like me, the flashing icon would be even more helpful.

I don't know if this is a recent change...but I now see that when you are on your "Private Messages" page and click on a particular thread of correspondence, you get taken to the reply box at the bottom of the page instead of the first post.

Sorry, but that makes even less sense to me.  Like with any regular thread, there should be a way to get to the beginning of the PM AND a way to be taken to any new posting within the PM.  And, frankly, it should be consistent with the way it's done for a forum thread.

When you send a PM...in the lower right-hand corner of the PM box are two side-by-side buttons:   The left button is "Send" and the right button is 'Clear."  They should be reversed.

I posted in the Forum Functionality thread about a similar situation with the Advanced Search form.

We need a Preview function for PMs, similar to the "Preview" function for posts. The old software had it, and I always found it useful for reading over a message before I sent it.

The ability to forward PMs
On the home page, there is a  listing of recent PM threads in the upper right-hand column.  Why not have that same listing available on the PM thread pages themselves?

Here's why.  Let's say i have 3 new PMs in three different threads--all at the same time.  I click on one PM, read the message and respond.  I then have to exit that page to regenerate a list of PMs.   Then click on the link to the 2nd thread and repeat it all over again. If I could maintain the list of my PM threads throughout the PM process it would make it easier to navigate within the PM realm.

This, of course, is on top of the other main PM concern about never being able to get to the first unread PM in a thread.

Thanks Mike.  Just an FYI, we are saving all the PM issues until we take care of some of the other enhancements first.  Keep adding suggestions to make sure they are included when we send everything over.

I noticed this suggestion isn't on the roadmap list. I'm hoping that it might be added. Having had some longer back and forths recently, I agree that having the "new message" link go straight to the latest message would be a great little improvement.

My mistake; I searched for the wrong thing. I see this entire thread is linked on the roadmap summary. Fingers crossed for this tweak.
