unusual subwoofer placement question

we're reorganizing part of the space of my multi-purpose room/home-theater.  The nice little protected space where the subwoofer lives is... going to be a whole lot less protected.  (It's a sideways firing sub, not down-firing.)

Supposing I had a shelf nicely screwed into the studs, stable and secure, can anyone suggest good reasons why the subwoofer can't be, say, mounted physically high in the space?  Say, 6 or so feet above the floor?

I suspect it'll transfer a lot more vibration into the wall and ceiling (conducting further into the rest of the house,) but anything else?

Nothing stopping you from doing this.  In fact a lot of IB subs are mounted in the ceiling.  When I'm done, I'll have four 18" subs mounted 10 feet from the floor in a room with a 9 foot ceiling.  In your case, it will probably transfer more vibrations to the wall.  Have you felt the sub enclosure when it was really working?  Pick it up and hold it during a very loud explosion during a movie.  That is the vibration that will be transferred to the wall.  If you have opposing drivers, then the mechanical vibrations are cancelled out and you are left with acoustic energy only.  Here are some example of opposing drivers - http://home.comcast.net/~infinitelybaffled/page4IB-Gallery3.html

You would probably also want to do a test with your current sub in your listening position.  How does it sound when your head (or SPL meter) is in the proposed location?

Ick.

Unfortunately, for some reason, my sub has decided to go all buzzy.  I don't think we had even touched it, or even if we had, it wasn't much, and now there's a very very dominant buzz, without concern for the amplifier gain.  Or, in fact, any of the settings except for the power switch.

It seems unlikely that the internal amplifier or something like that decided to just go "zzzzzzzz!" because we looked at the nice maple housing.

Bad sub cable?  Ground loop?  Amp gone out?

Unfortunately, no quick answers on this yet.  I'm afraid it's in the amp/processor box inside the sub. (It's a powered AV123 10" "Rocket" that has the internal calibration and all that jazz.  Maybe I'll open it up again and see if there's an easy way to just bypass the amplifier portion.. I know I can bypass the electronics entirely, but...  That and no one is "open" for support until Tuesday.
