DAMN! New Star Blazers movie coming this December!

Damn! After some nearly 30 years of silence, there is a new Star Blazers/Yamato movie on the horizon: Uchuu Senkan Yamato Fukkatsu-hen. Apparently the new film is set in in the year 2220, 17 years after "Final Yamato". A 320,000-kilometer-wide black hole threatens Earth, so 300 million people set a course for Amaaru, 27,000 light years away. The transport fleet is attacked, and the new Yamato battleship leads the counterstrike. 38-year-old Susumu Kodai, the hero of the first series, is now a space captain, and he has a daughter named Miyuki with his wife Yuki (the heroine of the first series).
 
Anyway, thought you guys might want to know! I *LOVED* this show as a wee lil' kid. . . .

I did love this show.  Not two "DAMN" love, but I can still sing the song :)

I'll be interested in this.  Is it seeing any sort of theatrical release?

Just in Japan for the moment, as far as I know. I imagine that we'll get the DVD version over here soon enough - at least I hope! :)

I cannot believe we haven't gotten a live action version of the original show.

Yeah I loved it too, I remember running from my friend's house (who lived a block from my elementary school) right as the end credits started to get to school on time. I would always go to his house so we could watch the show and then make it to second [third?] grade before roll call. I couldn't watch it at home because I lived 8+ blocks away and would always have been late.

IIRC, there were some efforts a few years back to do a live action movie but obviously nothing came of it.

Has the original show had a proper dvd release over here?

If the Wikipedia is to be believed, Noboru Ishiguro (director and writer of the first series of Space Cruiser Yamato) is working on a live action version slated for release sometime 2011-ish. We'll see if anything comes of it.

As for a proper release, not anything with English (aside from the Star Blazers version). The closest you can get is a fan subbed version that's floating around (I just finished downloading Yamato 1 and 2, and the sub job looks pretty good. And before someone points the bootleg finger at me, I'll point out that I have the whole Japanese series on Laserdisc, so I'm covered)
