Connecting my top-box cable TV sound to my DVD player (using optical cable)

I have the following devices:

Samsung Digital TV
DVD Player
Bluewin TV (Top-box decoder)

Both devices are connected to the TV using HDMI cables.

My home theater surround system is connected to my DVD player. When I try a DVD or Audio CD on my DVD player, the sound comes out of all 5.1 speakers just fine. I would like the sound coming from my top-box bluewin TV to also come out of my home theater speakers.

First I attempted to connect the red and white cables from the top-box and into the DVD's in red and white cables (for audio). The sound only came out of two speakers and not the rest. I thought because its only 2 red and white cables and its not digital so the sound won't make it to all 5.1 speakers.

Second attemp, I bought a digital audio optical cable, and connected the optical out from the top-box, to the optical in in the DVD, but still the sound comes out only from two speakers and not the rest.

Is it possible that I get this to work on all speakers? My brother said its a matter of configuration and Samsung helpline said its not possible to get the sound out of all speakers from an external device. Even with optical cable.

Please help I am totaly lost!

By this, do you mean that your DVD player and surround sound system are integrated into a single unit?  If so, can you please provide a manufacturer and model number?

If the surround sound system is a separate component, then you probably need to run the digital audio cable from the top-box OUT to a second optical IN on the surround system (assuming it has a second input).  Then to listen to TV, you switch the input selector to the corresponding input.

Also, keep in mind that not all TV shows are broadcast in 5.1.  Only Hi-Def stations are capable of full 5.1 audio.  Do you have Hi-Def service?  If not, then it's likely you're only getting stereo (2.0) or pro-logic sound.  Most surround sound systems have in their setup menus options for "all channel stereo" or something similar that will take a signal and push it through all speakers, though this isn't really true surround sound.
