Icons of Suspense: New Hammer set from Sony in 2010

The great guys from Sony updated their Blog at Columbia Classics and they're writing about an upcoming Hammer set in 2010:

Next year, look for another Icons release when we gear up for the Icons of Suspense, the third in our effort to bring forward the great Hammer films in the Columbia library. The titles in this next set will include such masterpieces as Stop Me Before I Kill, Cash on Demand, Never Take Candy from a Stranger, Maniac, The Snorkel, and the great Joseph Losey-directed These Are the Damned. As with the previous Hammer releases, we are dedicated to providing the longest, most original restored versions of these films possible.

New Yorkers: THE SNORKEL is at Film Forum today, as part of its "Brit Noir" series.

This is great news, especially seeing These Are the Damned in the set.

Excellent news. Never thought I would ever see a major release of many of these films but am so happy to see them. This will put me alot closer to finally seeing all the post 1954 Hammer films. Thank You Very much Sony! Hopefully this means we will get a 4th set after this. I guess it would be an adventure set with:
1.) Camp on Blood Island
2.) Brigand of Kandahar
3.) The Crimsom Blade
4.) Sword of Sherwood Forest
5.) Creatures the World Forgot
6.) Yesterdays Enemy

With this set Sony would be pretty complete and will have done Hammer fans a great service.

No, I just got back from the 10pm. Looking forward to the eventual DVD.

Very cool set!

Never Take Candy from a Stranger, Maniac, The Snorkel, and These Are the Damned range from very good to excellent in my book.  I'm especially overjoyed that These are the Damned is in this Hammer set rather than a Joseph Losey collection (no offense to the Losey diehards here).

and I'm really looking forward to finally seeing Cash on Demand for the first time.

Now if only Sony could gain control of the Warner, Universal, Paramount, Fox and MGM catalogs all would be right in the world.  ;)

NEVER TAKE CANDY...  is an excellent drama that really has an impact even in present days.  I'm amazed and exceedingly pleased that it's getting a proper release.  Sony has really gone from being a rubbish studio to one of the very best.

Careful now.  Any day here and Warner will announce another single catalog bare-bones title on pressed disc.  Then we'll have to hear how they're still relevant.

You guys possibly ought to thank me that these previously elusive titles will now be issued on DVD - seeing how I've acquired 4 of them from 'other sources' (with 1961's CASH ON DEMAND literally just the other day) and seen another at the American Cinematheque in early 2006! The only one I had nothing to do with is the Val Guest one. Oh, well...

For the record, I'm only familiar with THE SNORKEL (1958), MANIAC (1963) and THESE ARE THE DAMNED (1963) so far - but I'll definitely buy them legitimately (like with the rest of the Hammer "Icon" sets) if the right supplements (read Audio Commentaries and interviews) are added to the mix.

The only one of these I haven't seen is THE SNORKEL, but the others are all first-rate British filmmaking.  Very underrated material that gets pushed aside in favor of Hammer's horror output (and which frankly hasn't held up as well).

Ain't that the truth.

There is small chance that Sony will again gain control of the MGM catalogs.  Sony still owns part of MGM and with MGM's ongoing cash flow problems, the owners of MGM might have to re-take control.  The sad part is that would be the end of MGM and United Artists.  It is also laughable in that when Sony first gained control everyone cried foul in that Sony was not releasing catalog titles and MGM was then one of the best.  Strange what three or four years can do.

I'll second that set.  Make sure Creatures the World Forgot is included!

Looking forward to this Suspense set!

Is this set still a go? I don't see a listing at Amazon and it's been over 4 months since i read about it.

Agreed.  NEVER TAKE CANDY...  was pretty powerful and shocking for 1960 and is still very effective today.  The pedophile in it may be Hammer's creepiest monster.  I rank it amongst Hammer's best films.

That was my least favorite.  I almost voted for the phone (based on first impression), but when I saw the smaller version (to fit my screen) of the noose cover art, I went with that one.  Looks like I'm losing

"Peter Cushing turns in one of his best performances ever, in Cash On Demand. Cushing is the fussy bank manager who is forced to ally himself with a bank robber in this tense story, based on a play. The original film version was cut by nearly 11 minutes, because audiences found it difficult to sympathize with Cushing’s character. The restored footage makes this film even more tense and surprising. "

From www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/columbiaclassics/in-production/

So, has this 11 minutes never been seen before (outside of preview audiences), even outside of R1?
According to Hammer Films on twitter, twitter.com/hammerfilms/status/6891813305 , the film was cut 22 minutes in the UK (unlike the US release), so this release is 33 minutes longer than the 1963 UK release, and 11 minutes longer than the 1961 US release, right?

I sure like this comment on their website:

The restoration work done in order to bring these films to DVD has included the restoration of deleted scenes, and includes the presentation of the longest possible versions.
