newbie - trying to get Bass.....

friend just gave me my first home theater system ... older Samsung HT-P38...
sounds great in my living room BUT it had no SUBWOOFER... I've looked on line and found a NEW SUB for this model at $115 ... but I've found complete used systems with all 5 speakers for $150.... since the system was free I kinda hate to ruin the fun of the great value by buying one for $150 just to get the subwoofer... Any idea where I could get an HT-P38 subwoofer ONLY?  I read the specs on the subwoofer and it was 134 watts, 6" passive subwoofer ... if I buy the correct 4.2mm connectors can i just buy a sub and "hook-it-up"?  Your input appreciated!

You can connect any passive sub to that system.  Buy this box - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=260-644 and this driver - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=295-185 .  I have used this exact driver in a 1.25 cubic foot enclosure and it works great.  The best thing about this is if you upgrade to a better receiver later, all you need to do is add a sub amp and you can keep using this sub.

The reason I suggested this approach is that there are very few passive subs on the retail market.  And the ones that you do find are the low quality models at expensive prices that you have already noted.

Robert - Thank you for the details and the next steps... I'll let you know how this turns out after I build the subwoofer!  Thanks!  Joe
