Rear projection TVs

I'm putting together a new home theater system for a room in my basement. I'll be sitting about 12 feet from the TV (because I have a sectional couch). I initially was going to get a 54'' Panasonic Plasma, but now I'm concerned that it won't be big enough to really feel like I'm watching a movie.
So then I was looking at the Mitsubisihi rear projection 65'' 65737 1080p 120 hz. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on that one?

Do you think a 54'' widescreen is large enough to view from 12 feet away and really look big enough? Or should I shoot for the 65''

That's still too small for a 12' viewing distance.  Have you considered front projection?  A 1080p image would justify a 7.12 - 8 foot wide screen at that seating location.

Yeah, 54" is definitely too small for what you want.  Even 65" is probably too small (for 12ft distance) like GeorgeAB said.  At 65", I'd probably want to sit no more than ~10ft away -- and that would only be like sitting in the rear 1/4 of a reasonably well setup multiplex theater.  For that kind of result from 12ft away, you'll probably need a 72"-plus display.  If you want a true big screen theater experience like sitting in the middle section of a good theater, you'll probably need something much closer to GeorgeAB's suggestion.

Here's a simple screen size and viewing distance calculator to help you out:

I figured a front projection was out of my price range ($2,000 or less). Not true?

Does anyone have experience with the Mitsu rear projection -- 65''? I've heard that the picture quality is about as good as a plasma looking at it straight on. But I find that difficult to believe. I wouldn't be sitting far off angle, because my room is only 10 feet wide.

I don't know what quality 1080p FP setup you can actually get for that, but sounds like it may be possible now according to this recent comment:

Certainly worth looking into.
