Rock and Roll is on like Disks of Tron for 9/9/9 - Page 2

 Yeah, the 32-bitness is disappointing.

So I got iTunes 9 installed on all of my machines. It took about 10 minutes to update my large library (130GB+), but that's expected by now for these major releases.

There are some new browsing options - at least I think they're new. I usually run with the browser thingy (Genre/Artist/Album) on top. You can now put it in a column on the left (showing one field you choose), and that's the way it came up. Easy to set back the old way with the View menu.

I checked out Home Sharing. You have to enable it on each machine by signing in with your iTunes/Apple account. Then you're good to go. It's a little disappointing, in that the only automatic syncing offered is to transfer "New Purchases" from any given library to another. And that's it. This refers to actual store purchases, and not to new additions you did outside the store (like ripping a disc). You CAN now manually select items and import them from a shared library. That's functionality that I appreciate and will use, but it sure would have been nice to have some more syncing - even if only a user-selectable playlist.

Won't have a chance to check out other new features until later.

So anything new with actual Hardware? I am looking at getting an iMac but thought I should hold off for any big announcements that will make a new model a must-have or will at least drive down the price of last year's models.

(got a few hours of online access while on vacation this week. was having HTF withdrawl...)

So I was wrong. I find this announcement somewhere between neato and flabberghasting.

I see a $199 iPod Touch as a *boom*. This is the cannon shot that sinks the ship of every DAP company on the planet -- and possibly all the game companies. The Touch now costs the same as a nano. A portable computer / web system / iPod / movie / gaming device is affordable by pretty much everyone, costing about the same as a Nintendo DS. While nothing is new technologically -- it's previous gen Touch, yes? -- the pricing is seismic. This changes the computer world, and we'll see it in hindsight in five years.

The nano: I love my nano. Last year's 16 GB version with tall screen. Dollar for dollar, I'll still take it over the Touch. This new one is nifty, but not particularly enticing. I've wanted FM radio since my first nano four years ago. Nice upgrade. Video camera: I'm not a young hipster who takes vids of his buds' ollies and kick-flips for YouTube. But I'd like a little video camera for my hobbies. So this might be an appealing upgrade if it's good quality video, easy to use, etc.

iTunes? I need to learn more but the stuff about sharing music at home sounds much improved over the current system. This might be nice for my setup. Looking forward to reviews and explanations.

Suprisingly interesting refresh.

Nothing today. Last year they had an October announcement about hardware (last year it was the MacBooks). There have been rumors of iMac updates in the fall this year, including price drops similar to those of the MacBook Pro line in June. So I would say keep a close ear to the rumor mill over the next few weeks. If something's coming things will heat up fairly soon. If we get into mid-October with no news, then I would say Apple's done for the year.

Why?
http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2009/09/why_do_you_want_a_64-bit_itunes.html

For me I just think it is interesting in SL that every included app but 3 have moved to 64 bit (and one of those 3 is iTunes), not that I want some magic performance enhancing 64bit fairy dust.  Others genuinely seem to feel there will be some real benefit, and JNack rightly asks 'what is it exactly that you want?'

A 64-bit itunes would let me listen to 60 minutes of music in only 30! Imagine the productivity gains if we're all listening to music faster!

Also 64-bits gives more floating point precision, so podcasts, especially for news, will be more accurate.

And 64-bits greatly increases the amount of memory iTunes can access. Individual songs could be larger than 4GB. Imagine the prog-rock concept albums possible when an individual track can be over 100 hours long!

Yes.  Though I am not sure this is possible with an 'integrated' system like what I have on my trailblazer.  I'm looking for more information.

For headsets tho, you just hold down the bluetooth button until the voice menu activates.

Yup, Bulgarian keyboard woks!! and the layout is better than expected.

Used iTunes sharing this morning -- a treat.  One thing I noticed -- the iTunes 9 upgrade required a reboot under Leopard, but not under Snow Leopard.  Another welcome improvement.

And Dave, thank you for your brilliant elucidation of the advantages of 64 bit iTunes.

The iTunes organizational hierarchy has been slowly getting more and more disorganized with each feature Apple adds. When you let iTunes manage your files, traditionally they toss everything in ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. That works great when everything in “iTunes Music” is, you know, music. Once they’ve tossed movies, podcasts, and a slew of other features in the mix, your directory hierarchy gets really nonsensical with everything in one big ol’ pile.

iTunes 9 finally moves away from this mentality, though the feature is hidden by default. iTunes now lets you organize everything into an upper level “iTunes Media” folder structure, which then breaks out neatly into logical groupings: movies, apps, shows, and so on. You can find this in File => Library => Organize Library. You’re welcome.

I hope this makes moving individual media pieces to external drives a LOT easier.  Will experiment tonight!

Glad I could help everyone understand why 64 bit is so important.

I'm not sure what I think about the new organization method in iTunes. I used to the 3-pane categorization so the new system completely throws me.

This didn't work the way I thought it would.  Movies folder is still buried in with all the others, only now, it simply put each movie into its own folder within the movies folder.  What was the point of that??

Genius Mixes: any way to display the playlist? I love the previously added Genius Playlists -- huge feature on my iPod. And now I'm intrigued by the Genius Mixes on my MBP. But it seems to only play the music "magically"; there's no list of its compilation, not even recently played or next up. Is there a way to to list even some part of the Genius Mix's selection?

None of that happened for me. No "iTunes Media" folder. TV Shows are still organized under "iTunes Music". (I don't have movies or apps.) I rarely dig into the iTunes folder, so it's not a practical concern. But it's curious.

Thanks Craig, that's the word I was hoping for. I'll keep my ear to the ground.

This is what my library looks like right now:

This is one of the best changes to iTunes ever.

Is that what iTunes did automatically? I've got nothing like that.

You showed me yours, so I'll show you mine :)

I did both.
