Sony Bravia KDL-46V5100 - HELP!

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased the KDL-46V5100.  Anything in HD or any recent movies on DVD look amazing!  Anything in SD, any old DVD's and my PS2 look very murky and there are squiggles around certain things on screen (especially in cartoons).  I've messed with the settings a lot and it looks a bit better but it's definitely not great.  I've read several reviews from people who state that this TV can look better than a tube TV for SD but as of right now the quality that I'm getting is significantly worse.  Can anyone give me some pointers on a setting combination that may help to increase picture quality?  My PS2 quality is so bad that I don't even want to play it anymore...speaking of which, I am planning to purchase a PS3 soon.  I assume the picture quality will be amazing because of the BluRay capabilities.  Is this correct?

Thanks!

The first thing I would do is switch off any picture "enhancements" in the menu - things like noise reduction, edge enhancement, contast or black level enhancement etc. - basically switch everything to "off". If you're using a cable or satellite box, try changing the settings so that everything is output at 1080i.

Next, turn the sharpness all the way down to zero. Switch the colour temperature to "warm", or if you find it too red, "medium'. And if you don't already have one, get a calibration DVD with test patterns so that you can set the black & white levels, colour and tint correctly.

You should see some improvement. But that said, I've never seen an HD set that looks anywhere near as good as a standard def CRT set when displaying SD material. An HD set is designed primarily to display high-def, SD performance is an afterthought and everything must be deinterlaced and scaled to match the resolution of the display.

Blu-ray on the PS3 should look stunning - but it'll make SD look even worse by comparison.

Thanks for the suggestions, it does look better now.  There's still some murkiness but it's not nearly as bad as it was.  Thanks again!
