What do you think of this deal from Best Buy? This TV and Blue Ray for $1299:

Sony - BRAVIA / 46" Class / 1080p / 120Hz / LCD HDTV
KDL-46V5100

Sony - Blu-ray Disc Player with 1080p Output
BDP-S360

Also- what kind of basic reciever would I need? help

 John,

It's an excellent deal.

Consider that Amazon is selling the 46V5100 for $1279
and the BDP-360 for $213.

With that deal you are saving $200.

As far as a receiver is concerned you will probably need
to spend somewhere in the $800 range for something that
is mid-line.  The problem I find with the really cheap receivers
is that although they claim to be HDMI compliant, they only
push the picture and not the audio (instead of both as they
should).  Onkyo is well rated for the price.

Welcome to the forum.  Let us know how you make out
and certainly, post a review of your new home theater.

Ronald I think you are 3 years behind on receiver pricing.  As you know they drop prices and add features previously exclusive to expensive models to lower models all the time.  These days you only need spend about half that much, $400-500 for a good 7.1 receiver w/ full HDMI audio capabilities, and $100 less than that for 5.1.

 Stephen,

Last time I shopped for receivers was about a year ago and
many of the low-priced receivers did not have full HDMI
capability.

I am happy to hear that prices have dropped even further
and that many of these receivers now have full HDMI
support at price levels not previously available.

Is the sony a good tv for the money or should I go elsewhere (samsung 1080p, 60 hz) in that price range?

Sony makes a good TV.  I happen to like Samsung's better, but they're both in the upper tier.  In *general*, I think the Sony's cost more for the same quality picture; but once you start getting into deals and sale pricing, that goes out the window.

While it is true that $400 or so will get you a nice receiver these days, if you have the funds I would still go for the closer to $1000 range.  To get the costs down the lower end receivers sacrifice features.  For example, the $400 Onkyo's (576, 607's) include Audyssey 2EQ compared to the $700-1000 models (707, 807) have Audyssey MultEQ (the 876 had MultEQ XT - even better).  The difference is the 2EQ does NOTHING for your subwoofer.  EQing the sub is very important.
