Do you get the best price on Amazon PREORDERS?

Have a quick question for all of you....

I originally preordered the new Beatles Remastered
Box set from Amazon for about $179.

Problem is, I would rather wait a few days after the
release to order it as my credit card enters its new
billing cycle.

Do preorder prices usually shoot up the day of or

after release?

I can't know for sure but I think that 9 times out of 10, the price doesn't go up when it goes from pre-order to available. I've seen the price go up on some small titles but not on anything high profile like that. With The Beatles set, Best Buy or Target, etc. might have it on sale cheaper than $180 and Amazon may even lower their price to match the competition.

I have seen street date prices go up in as little as a week at Amazon, but not the day of or after release.

I have the stereo box set on preorder, too.  I ordered the mono box set from Barnes & Noble because it was cheaper with the AAA discount and coupon.

Ron, this was just posted today at Amazon.  So if you cancel your order, it will only be available sometime after release date.  I am betting it will be at a higher price, too--the law of supply and demand in play.

Yeah, they might jack up the price now.  I will wait till it drops
down to $179 again.

Sam, that's a highly arguable subject.

Those masters were originally released in both versions.

In fact, many of the mono releases of the later albums,
as far as I know were never released.

While I understand the mono releases bring out nuances
never-before-heard, I personally prefer having stereo versions.

The opinions on this are going to be very subjective.

I'm just busting your chops buddy =)

I'll be getting my Beatles fix on the 9th from iTunes.  I think they will have both Stereo and Mono, but in the standard (but VERY high quality) 256k Compressed format.  Obviously this isn't announced yet but if anyone doubts it they are crazy.  I have the Beatles #1s collection and a couple others, so will just need to fill in the blanks, but I'm hoping there is one nice and easy button to push to get the whole collection in both Stereo and Mono for one price.

And of course I'll be on board for Beatles Rock band too.  I played it at Best Buy last week, it's killer!

What most hardcore fans would remind you to keep in mind, however, is that the mixes that the Beatles concerned themselves with up through Sgt. Pepper, were the mono mixes -- the stereo mixes were typically an afterthought.

I'm just a casual fan, but that would explain why many of the songs sound odd in stereo (on my old CDs), especially when listening on headphones.  Most of them sound like they're simply duo-mono, and the others either sound extremely artificial or even have parts of the song be mono exclusively on one channel (probably for the main track w/ a secondary track added to the otherwise silent other channel).

The stereo-only releases were Abbey Road and Let it Be.  Yellow Submarine was released in mono, but it was a stereo fold-down.  That leaves ~3 singles on the Past Masters compilation that were only released in stereo (Ballad of John and Yoko was one of them, I don't recall the others).

Thus, the bulk of the catalog was released in mono, first and foremost.

But I am still getting the stereo box set in addition to the mono one.

It's also worth mentioning that the stereo set includes only the remixed stereo versions of Help! and Rubber Soul created by George Martin for CD in the '80s -- the original '60s stereo mixes of each album appears only on the mono box sets.

The original 1965 stereo versions of Help and Rubber Soul will be included in the mono box (as extra tracks on the respective mono CD's.... which just illustrates how much room is left over on each CD).  The 1987 (and now 2009) stereo releases of Help and Rubber Soul are remixes by George Martin.
