Calibration off on new Panasonic Plasma TV

I bought a new TC-P42S1 for my bedroom along with a TiVO HD. They are connected with an HDMI cable. Won't get the Cable decoder cards until this afternoon, so can't yet get the HD channels, but upon initial setup I was disappointed with the picture on the standard channels.  My old Panasonic (TH-42PW3) in the family room looks quite sharp on the standard channels, but the new one looks fuzzy. I'm sure some "factory" setting needs changing, but I'm not sure what. Any suggestions?

Your best bet is to pick up a calibration disc like Avia or Digital Video Essentials (DVE).

A few items you can do in the mean time....

Turn off ALL enhancements.  They are there for marketing and usually add nothing to the picture quality (mostly make it worse).

Turn the sharpness down.

Find a setting called "Cinema"or "Theater" mode.  Don't use presets like Sports or Games.

Don't panic until you get the cablecards in.  You are presumably recording analog channels on the Tivo, there is inevitable quality loss with that situation.  Once the cards are in you'll likely get those in digital simulcast instead, which will be better, no recording losses.

Ok, now that I have the cable card in (luckily, my daughter who has a TiVo and cable was there when the cable men arrived and took care of getting a single card that handles both channels), there are other options available when I go to settings on the TiVo. I'm confused now by the possibilities. I have it set at "Native" which sends the signal to the TV the same as the incoming signal. So the regular channels are shown at 480p. That has the effect of making the on-line instructions show at that resolution until a higher level signal is sent. Should I instead have everything shown at 1080i?
