Sony Has Reached A New Low

I was just over to videoeta and noticed listings for The Jeffersons and Diff'rent Strokes. When I saw this I almost fell out of my chair, only to see half a milisecond later that it's The Jeffersons Season 1,Volume 1 and Diff'rent Strokes Season 2,Volume 2.So instead of continuing with further seasons of these shows, they're now splitting them into half season sets. How pathetic is that? This is just further proof(as if we neeeded any more)that Sony is the worst studio, when it comes to releasing TV on DVD.

I believe that you've gotten some bad info. The only Jeffersons and Diff'rent Strokes releases on Sony's schedule are so-called "fan favorites" collections, which apparently will contain ten episodes each.

Both have release dates of September 29.

And, let me guess, they're only "fan favorite" episodes that have already been released on DVD, right?

The upcoming Bewitched Fan Favorites collection from Sony is simply Disc 1 from Season Two (Colorized).  Hardly a collection of fan faves.  Just a single disc from a season set with a new label slapped on.  Not sure if the others will be similar or not.  But based on the OP, I'd wager that The Jeffersons will be Disc 1 of Season One and Diff'rent Strokes will be Disc 2 of Season Two.  We'll see.

I don't remember them asking anywhere what anyone's favorite episodes of these shows were, like they did before for Designing Women and Married…With Children "best-of" discs.

Seriously, if they are just releasing individual discs out of season sets and calling it "fan favorites", then they seriously need to just retire and let Shout! handle everything. While the classic film division is restarting with barrels blazing (they may even replace Warner Bros. in that respect, which was once unthinkable), the TV department was always operating on the theory of "let's throw first seasons of a dozen shows to the wall to see if they stick," and when they didn't, they gave other stuff to Shout!

Hey, what else can they do with extra stock laying around!   :)

And then the likelihood would increase for butchered prints, abandoned titled after a year of hemming and hawing that they really weren't abandoned and public committments to titles before all rights were cleared (to name some of the things that came to us courtesy of Shout!)

Yeah, like I believe that. Seriously, you are basing your dislike on the way they handled TBCS, Ironside, and Rhoda, and only on the way they handled TBCS, Ironside, Rhoda.

Oh, and as for committing to titles before all the music rights were cleared, did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe, they weren't told ahead of time that there's no separate music and voice tracks and thought what couldn't get cleared could be replaced?

Fool me three times, as Shout! has done (four if I include getting stuck with two defective sets of Adam-12 S3, the only title left they put out I  was still committing too but if I have to keep going through unreliability of disc pressing for that, then forget it) then shame on me big time if I ever thought they were a company worthy of having everything turned over to them, as I keep hearing so many people strangely insist should be the case.

And if they thought some music could be replaced, then where I ask is the usual outrage that would be directed over the matter of music replacement that other companies don't get a pass on?  (and deservedly so).    Do you mean Shout! *would* have gotten a free pass on music replacement if they had been able to do it?

Well in the case of Adam-12, it was probably just bad luck on your end, as no one else in the Adam-12 season 3 thread reported any such problems on their ends.

Apparently Warner Bros. was paying someone to destroy their extra stock, but the third party sold it to Big Lots in breach of contract. That's why you see TV season sets and classic movies for pennies on the dollar there.

I have never cared for "Best Of" compilations of anything. There seems to be something I really want always left out. When I hear "Best Of", I am thinking I won't be getting what I really want, so why purchase it?

Just like we predicted: single discs out of a season set for each of them.

Just go ahead and sell Columbia already, Sony.

It's because the studio, Sony, is re-releasing all of their classic TV titles in new packaging. Think "Family Ties" and "Walker Texas Ranger" packaging.

yeah, i just seen they are releasing the best of dvds again, so, it tells me they want to gauge demand for certain series, like Barney Miller/Different Strokes, etc.

I am planning to buy the complete series of Sanford & Son and Good Times in the new year. I also hope they release more of Barney Miller, but, the verdict is still out. They just did the third season this year.
