Dexter Season 4 - Page 2

Holy crap!

We started off the show with one of the best cat-and-mouse Dexter vs. Prey showdowns in a long time, as he played the back and forth with the cop.. which was a great "A" story, and then in the last five minutes the "B" storyline about Lundy goes off... Talk about some breakneck pacing, when the show was over, I couldn't hardly believe it was an hour, it felt as though the episode flew by so much happened..

I'm a new Dexter fan, having spent the last month or so using Comcast On Demand to watch the entire series so far. I caught up just in time to start season 4, which I am really enjoying! John Lithgow plays one disturbed man. I wont specify what he did, but in this episode he did TWO things that just made me go...huh? He is really disturbed.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The funniest moment of the episode was when Dex had captured the Lady cop and she mentions rape again and he is like "What is it wiht you and Rape? NO one is raping anybody!"

Yeah, that bit of dialog was classic.   Since I had just seen "Defying Gravity" the night before, it was a different role for her.  But that entire sequence, of him playing cat and mouse was so good.  I watched it afterwards, and I loved everything about the bathroom scene.

But the ending, my goodness.. this is the problem with Dexter, if I were to wait until the end of the season, I'd watch it in one giant marathon, because it's almost cruel to wait and find out what the hell is going to happen with Deb/Lundy..

Great episode. Right up there with anything from S1 or S2.
So ... good taut episode, though it seemed like Dexter was moving so fast to get the lady cop (I guess his 3-day holiday from the wife and kids sped up his usual schedule and planning).

It looks like we'll be getting 2 killers to hunt for for the rest of the season: Trinity and also the Vacation Killer.

Wow.  Great ep.  I thought season three was the weakest of the three earlier seasons.  Slow throughout, though it ended real well.  Season 4 so far is right up there with my favorite (S2).  I hope they can keep this up, but that was great.  The lady cop was scary at points.  The fight with her and Dexter was awesome.  It's been a while since we've seen Dexter in a brawl like that.  Maybe since Doakes?  I also like his slow emotional growth.  It was like he was amazed to realize how much he cared about his family.  Brings back some nostalgia from the early seasons.

Yes the look on Dexter's face when he realized he DID miss his family was priceless.  Quite the epiphany for him.

Wow.  Trinity absolutely has the book figured out.. and Lundy & Dexter had him all wrong.. is he a polygamist?   Or does he just return to Miami after each adventure?

This entire season is really on a roll.

We'll probably find out he has to do a lot of travel for his real 'job'.

Jennifer Carpenter did a great job when Deb broke down in the parking lot.  And Dexter really has trouble with any other emotion other than anger/revenge.
I'm not even sure how well he does anger. Consider... if someone were to grab your daughter in front of you, murder her, then show up on your doorstep, what do you think you'd do? What do you think Dexter would do? I think instead of lashing out, Dexter would coldly and calculatingly plot to rid the world of an undesirable presence, and make sure he gets away with it. He might try to imitate anger for anyone watching him, but that's about it. They say true sociopaths simply don't have the feelings you and I have. I include Anger in that. Rather, I think Dexter eliminates people because he's drawn to death, and in his code, eliminating undesirables restores a degree of order (as he sees it). So I'm not even sure revenge comes into play.

That said, Dexter has had some recent developments. I haven't watched the most recent episode, but his realization that he misses his family is a huge development in his emotional psyche. Now if something were to happen to one of them and he had to miss them forever (that approximates at least a part of what a normal person feels), I think he'd have a more emotional reaction than in times past. I still think he'd be cold and calculating about righting a wrong, but I think we'd see his motivation come from a more emotional place at this point.

Agreed Mark, Deb's breakdown was well done.

The reveal about Trinity was unexpected in a way but in light of the season's themes makes perfect sense.  Can't wait for the two of them to square off and compare notes.

I guess it was good for both Dexter and Trinity that Trinity removed the DVD-R from the surveillance system so Dexter's presence at the building would not be recorded once the coffee guy's body is found on the 4th floor.

Dexter hunting his own "doppelganger" of sorts puts a neat spin on things.

I know this is out there, but I'm thinking Antone is actually the one that killed Lundy and shot Deb.  Just sort of a vibe I got, and how they kept stressing that Trinity is very structured and doesn't deviate from the pattern.  That, and how quickly Dexter came to the conclusion that Trinity is the one that did it.  All seemed too neat to me.  My money's on Antone.

Yeah, me too.  Sort of a darker form of Stockholm Syndrome.  Maybe he can be the Big Bad of next season?
Nah, I don't think the writers are going to give Deb a killer boyfriend again.

Plus, Antoine has been stabbed and a victim before.  But I'm not sure it was trinity who did the shooting.

Dexter should have tons of photos of crime scenes at his apartment.  He could just say "i need a place to study this stuff, and I don't want our kids to see all this blood & gore all the time.. this is like my study"  :)

No wonder Showtime loves this show:

Dexter pulls in most viewers to Showtime ever.  Deserves it.

But Deb sure knows how to pick 'em, doesn't she?  Even she admits that.  And techincally, Antone wasn't a killer when they first started dating (at least as far as we know).  Maybe Antone is really the vacation killer and they got the wrong guy... ;)
I am quite sure Trinity wasn't the one who shot Lundy and Deb, otherwise why not show it? They've shown all of his other recent killings.

I think it will be a surprise and Antone is as good a guess as any.

blah blah blah

Or, as another blindside... could it be the reporter?  Who's just trying to amp up her own stories?
Right the reporter, don't know if it's her but not sure if we mentioned how hot she is.  ;)
I thought about the reporter but I don't know why she'd target Lundy or Deb. If she picked them at random, that's an awfully big coincidence.
It's definitely not the reporter.

Or he could simply say that he's new to marriage, new to having kids and he's been on his own for so long that he hasn't completely gotten it out of his system.

I am thoroughly enjoying this season so far!

Does it really matter what he says by way of explanation?

Rita didn't focus on him having the apartment as much as she did the lying about it. No matter what excuse he gives, he'll still have lied to her. And that's her point. At least at this point. I have the feeling if he hadn't lied about it, she'd still have been all over him for keeping it. You know. Because of the cosmic significance of what it says about their love.

Rita's getting dangerously close to harpy territory in that she's always on him and threatening him whenever he does the slightest thing she doesn't like. I get why she's upset, but jeez. The man just almost lost his sister. Can you go knit a quilt or something for a bit? "When will be the right time?" Really? How about, "When we've either caught the attempted murderer or exhausted our hot leads." But no, I can see the urgency of the discussion. After all, if you'll lie about getting rid of your apartment, before you know it you're bedding crack whores in the house and letting crystal meth addices babysit the kids. Gotta nip this stuff in the bud.

Rita's been a pestering annoying PITA since last season (and possibly even before that).  Definitely my least favorite character on the show.  She's dangerously close to Corrine Mackey territory.
Rita needs to go IMO, she is very annoying
post #58 of 201
She may be annoying, but she is a very important part of the show.  Without Rita, Dexter would have no complications, nobody to hide his secret from.  Without the kids, Dexter would have only his sister to protect.  Both of those themes repeatedly come up and are important.  You may not like what the character says or does, but the role is an important part of every plot.  If they got rid of her, they'd just have to find another character to fill that hole.

Not necessarily.  I think if they killed her off it could make for some very interesting character development for Dexter.  He'd be a single father with 3 kids to take care of...not to mention the burden of a wife that was murdered by a serial killer (say if Trinity killed her or something).
Trinity wouldn't kill her, she had three kids.  Doesn't fit into his M.O.  Although it is a possibility if she gets hit by Dexter's shrapnel.
