I wonder where the next season will start off. Will some time have passed? They'll need  flashbacks to show how Dexter reported Rita's death.

I keep thinking that the Trinity killer would have been caught even if Dexter had done nothing from day one, but then we wouldn't have a Dexter story.  Anyway, Dexter was very careless this season and it cost him a lot.

Michael, you should check out the interview on Showtime.com with Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow.  It's a bit pretentious, but they actually address your main issue.  Basically, Dexter threw Trinity off his game (and vice versa).  The key scene being when Trinity has the meltdown with his family and Dexter there, and Dexter holds the knife over him.

Thanks, Scott.

The interview is interesting from numerous aspects, but I think I've said more than enough on the subject. I'm enjoying reading others' reactions.

I found this clip from "The Soup" to be pretty funny, make sure to only watch it if you've seen the finale though:

I enjoyed the series very much.  As far as I'm concerned the series is done, and I won't be watching season 5(will there be one?).

Everything has been neatly tied up in season four, and I think the death of the certain character was shocking, and very unexpected.  Brilliant on the writers part, but I also feel they painted themselves into a corner. Oh well, it was fun while I watched it.

Yes, there will be a season 5. I'll be watching.

I can't agree that the show has painted itself into a corner, this show has proven time and again that it's writers can come up with things that are not expected and are fresh, I'm sure they have tons of great ideas of where to go next.

Losing Rita was but a speed bump for them.

Ok, here's my problem with writers decision.  Dexter as a character doesn't have emotion.  He gets angry from time to time, and he is devout in his personal beliefs.  Dexter can never be a loving father because it is he himself that doesn't feel love.  He likes his family, and wants to be with them, but love is still a mountain to climb that Dexter has yet to tackle.
Rita was the opposite and often said "I love you" to her kids and Dexter.  She was something the show needed from the start.  Without her the show will wither.
I have no doubt that Dexter will find a new relationship with someone new, but I don't really care.
Watching a single dad juggle serial killing, a job, and raising a baby sounds like a wretched idea to kick off the next season.

Just my two cents.

Throw my 2 cents around:

I think Dexter lack of emotional connection is up in the air.   I think he does feel a lot more than he thinks he does and the premise of the show the first season or 2 led us to think.   He feels remorse, he feels anger, he has at least some empathy for young children who are threatened, and I think he does feel love for his children/Deb/and I'm pretty Rita.

Moreover he wants to feel these emotions he thinks or at least thought he was missing.   This maybe rudimentary emotional base is at the heart of his screwups over the last couple seasons -- he wants to be needed.   As his Head Dexter commentary said last season -- he was far more distressed when he disappointed Rita than when he was committing his gruesome acts.   When Deb was shot and he though she might die he was certainly feeling deepseated emotions.

I don't think they;ve painted him into a corner, but I'm looking forward to the return of Rita's Mother next season as surely she will come back and make Dexter's life a lot more interesting.   I haven't heard anything specifically, but it's just too juicy of a potential storyline since he's going to have to have somebody to help care for the children and Grandmother is certainly the likely source for now.

I think they did a brilliant job with showing how his relationship with deb became stronger the more she found out.  I think that could be a very interesting storyline.

This season proved that Dexter does indeed have all emotions including love.

Await with eagerness to see which way he goes next season.

Slight comment from the books.  I'll spoiler tag just in case, but no plot point:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Dexter from the books has no emotion.  He is the same in book 4 as he was in book 1, and as he was in season one of the show.
Dexter has evolved since season 1.  He is slowly getting emotions.  Look at his reaction to Rita's death. He doesn't feel like he was bested by Trinity.  He is distraught.  He also has made comments about caring about the kids and Deb in an emotional sense.  He is growing more human.  I don't have time to look for it, but I think I posted 1 or 2 times during this season re examples of his growing emotions.

Bryan, I have to question why someone would watch 4 great seasons of a show and then tune out without waiting to see what the writers come up with next.  At least let them prove to you that season 5 is bad without trying to guess that it will be.

I love the show.  Season 1 was pretty amazing.  Seasons 2-4(emphasis on 4) were very close to being as good.
I've given it some thought, and I will probably give it another shot. Given the track record of the show I will probably be pleasantly surprised. But as it stands, Dexter's life just went from pretty good to complete shit in one scene.  Season 4 turned out to be "The Empire Strike Back" of the Dexter universe.

That sounds like compelling drama.

Indeed.

Also, Deb was the lead detective in hunting Trinity, and Trinity's daughter committed suicide in front of her.  It wouldn't be too far off-base for Dexter to suggest that Trinity killing Deb's sister-in-law first, was part of a twisted revenge pact, with the rest of Dexter's family and Dexter himself next in line, before Trinity tried for Deb herself, especially since Deb has no other family to target.

Micheal C Hall is receiving Chemotheropy for Hodgkins Lymphoba, hopefully he'll be fine and can return to work soon, he's a great actor and very brave to come out that he is battling Cancer. I learned to appreciate the strength of soul one needs to have to get thru every day battling the disease since my Wife Beth was diagnosed with it a little over 1 year ago. Fortunately HL is one form of cancer with a very high remission and cure rate.

Julie Benz on Rita's death, in case there's any doubt:

So, let's set the record straight! Is Rita dead or not?
Rita's dead. She's long gone. I mean, when you lose that much blood, I don't think there's any hope for survival. What do you think?

Yeah, I wouldn't think so. I reviewed that last episode and, oh my gosh, I can't believe all the people still leaving comments on that post. A lot of them are saying it's a dream sequence. Are you getting that a lot from people? They're like, "Oh, it doesn't add up."
I'm getting people begging me to tell them it was dream sequence. I'm like, "I hate to tell you this, but it's true. It's real. Rita died and I'm dead." I would love it to be a dream sequence, but I'm released from my contract now. So, it wasn't a dream sequence.

Hopefully, that will appease all of the people still hoping for the dream sequence.
No. I think they're still going to hope for it. I do go on the message boards a lot and look at what people write, and it's always fun to hear their theories and philosophies. Somebody said that they thought Rita committed suicide. Then, there was a theory that Dex snuck in and killed Rita, which made me laugh. To set the record straight, Rita's dead and the Trinity Killer killed her.

I am just posting so that HUGE SPOILER will no longer appear on the main page for TV discussion (in the little summary of the most recent post).

I haven't watched this season yet, but I've already had that particular shocker spoiled (before now, I mean).  :(

Aaron - thanks for that.  I was going to but I was afraid to come in here to see what else would be ruined.  Gentlemen, a clue please!
