SD vs. HD cable service

I am getting a new cable service tomorrow. I live in a small town in Korea and full-fledged digital service is as of yet, unavailable. The service promises to deliver HD service for a few select channels and SD quality for the remainder. I would like to know exactly what to expect from SD quality. Is it really better than typical cable programming?

On another note, the service offers VOD. For HT users, is it possible to record from this type of service.

All the best,

Chris

Hi Chris

Welcome to the forum.  I had to move this message since it
was posted in the wrong forum area.

I don't know what kind of source you were using prior to the
new cable service you are receiving today.   If you are going
from one kind of cable service to another then the SD quality
should be about the same.

If you are going from a rooftop antenna to cable service then
the quality is going to be significantly better as the cable companies
clean up the signal.

I will say this -- my cable service (which is Fiber Optic) seems
to be upconverting the SD channels.  They look so good that for
some it may be difficult to tell them apart from the HD channels.
I am not sure if this kind of upconversion is normal for all services
but my SD channels look great.

Let us know how this new service works out for you.

It's not always true that a cable signal is better than an OTA signal.  Some cable companies compress or otherwise reduce the bandwidth of their signal.

Thank you for the information. I believe that the new service is a tremendous improvement on the old service (also cable,)
which I have retained for the time being.  I detect a notable improvement on all channels, so I'm happy with the
service.  The new service is myLGtv which is an IPtv service as opposed to the traditional CATV format. So far, I'm very pleased with it.
